Samsung Captivate :: Bandwidth Usage / Feeds And Updates Widget
Sep 28, 2010I am trying to track down a rogue application that seems to be receiving massive amounts of data. On the iPhone, I would use about 200mb/month due to WiFi at work and at home. However, on the Samsung Captivate, I can go from 100MB/month to 2+GB/month! I noticed huge amounts of data being used on my commutes to and from work.
On occasion, my home WiFi/DSL would get so lagged due to my Captivate being on the network that my son would complain and I would then put the phone in air plane mode. I reasoned that if it was happening on my WiFi network, as well as 3G, then perhaps I could using my router to log the activity to see what sites my phone was trying to connect to, then perhaps I could pinpoint the offending application.
My phone was connecting to a website that was part of a posting that was on facebook, which was only showing on the Samsung "Feeds and Updates" widget. I wasn't running the native facebook application at the time. I had the "Feeds and Updates" widget set to never update, unless I manually did it. Why was it trying to connect when it shouldn't have been? Don't know. Am I certain that this widget was the offending application? Not sure. Since removing the widget, I haven't had any bandwidth spikes.
PS. I tried Droid Wall, but it fails to work.
Samsung Captivate :: Some Apps Not Showing Updates
Nov 15, 2010I got a Captivate on the Rogers network here in Canada and I have some questions about some weird things I've noticed.
1. Some apps don't show updates when there are updates availableI use AppBrain and when I log in it says there are updates available for the following: Street View, Maps, Movies, Vlingo Voice, and Layar.I checked the version numbers of what is installed on my phone and what's in the market and sure enough the market versions are newer.However, when I open the Market application it doesn't show those applications in the list of downloads (and so no available updates).Also, if I go to the app page for Google Maps for example it shows an Install button, not an update button or "Installed".I use these apps so I know they're installed.What's going on?Is it because they came pre-installed?Can I safely update them through AppBrain even though the Market doesn't even show them as installed?
2. I can't find the Google Car Home app.I have searched via the Market and AppBrain and can't find this app anywhere.
3. Duplicate entries under Accounts and Sync.When I go to Accounts and Sync under settings I have two Facebook entries (both the same Facebook account though) and two Twitter entries (both the same Twitter account though).If I go in to each entry they have different settings. For example, one Facebook entry has just "Sync Contacts" while the other has "SNS setting", "Sync Contacts", and "Sync Calendar".Same with the Twitter entries. Why are these duplicates here?Also, when I go in to some contacts they have duplicate linked contacts from Facebook. So I have one contact who under linked contacts shows two linked contacts, one says it's from Facebook, the other says "Unknown" but I know it's also from Facebook since it has their Facebook picture (and they only have a Facebook profile and aren't in any other service like Google or Twitter).

Samsung Captivate :: Phone Randomly Shutting Down After Updates
Sep 25, 2010Ever since I've updated my phone shuts down randomly. Maybe once every other day, sometimes less. It would be a huge issue but my phone is also my alarm clock for getting up for work at 4am. I don't have any app killers, or battery savers installed. One thing I did notice POST update was, when you go into the running applications menu. The uptimes on the system apps seem to indicate the phone shuts them down to sleep or something. Several times Ive noticed, that even though my phone has been on for several days, the system apps have been running for 5/ 8 hours.

Jul 27, 2010I've been reading a lot of people getting errors while trying to check for samsung updates on the Captivate. I experienced this as well. I narrowed the problem to various Task Manager apps killing the "Device Management" task that is native to the captivate and launches after each reboot. When this task is killed, you will receive the "DM Initialization Error. Check your network or Sim Card" message every time you try to check for an update. Solution: Reboot and exclude the Device Management process from any of your task killers.

Oct 3, 2010I am currently running a rooted Samsung Captivate. I have not flashed it or anything and am still running 2.1 with the firmware update (JH7). I rooted to get rid of AT&Ts bloatware which I did using System App remover. With Froyo on the way, I was wondering if a master reset would turn it back to stock (minus AT&T bloatware) and enable OTA updates again?

Nov 8, 2010When I open titanium backup it prompts me to "go to phones settings, then in "applications" and tick the "unknown sources" checkbox. ok I dont have one. I tried to restore apps anyway and I got "your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from andriod".

Aug 19, 2010A couple days ago i noticed my phone was silent, which is pretty unusual.I decided to check and see if i had any messages, hit the power button, and saw no little message icon waiting for me. I figured no one had texted me so i moved on. About a half hour later i checked again only this time went in to the messages app thingie and had three unread messages, all of which had come up within the last thirty minutes.Ive been checking it more often now and it does vibrate, but the little icon doesnt stay up long/at all. Any idea what im doing wrong? Its getting kinda annoying not knowing if i have a message or something.

Not that I haven't mess with them before but I found it strange. Also got a small screen that popped up once when I went into applications saying Sim on/off with the choices to click ok or cancel. Dec 1, 2010I was able to successfully configure the stock email app on my android phone (Samsung Captivate). However when I went to "Email check frequency" in the settings to enable push, it did not allow me to do so. According to Android, there is an option in this setting called "Automatic (push)" other than polling options. In my case I just had polling options like "5 mts", "10 mts", "Never", and so on. But I don't have the "automatic push" option!
I checked in with my system admin. He said that they have enabled push from their end. In fact, we are on the corporate email of Google apps. So it is like a gmail except that it has my corporate email address. So this should have been a piece of cake, no?
General :: Play Store 3.5.15 Not Showing Updates

In previous versions, when I went to 'My Downloads' section, the applications which I can update was displayed in the top on the list, and I was able to update, but with the version 3.5.15, when an application is updates, the section 'My Downloads', in the tab 'Installed', is showing nothing. So I can't know if there are updates avalable or not

Feb 28, 2009I'm using the SAX parser to read some RSS feeds and have found a problem. Some feeds, for example CNN Money Top Stories, have embedded some characters in their content, i.e. the copyright symbol. Well, that's not valid XML and the SAX Parser fails with an exception "invalid token". The only help I have seen given is to fix the XML at the source and that's not an option obviously. So, I can think of 2 options and they both stink:
(a) read the content first, scrub it, and then pass it to the parser.
(b) Use DOM instead of SAX.
What I *want* to do is make the parser a little more forgiving and just accept or discard/ignore the bad text. I'm not have any luck with setErrorHandler. My error handler does not get called.

However, media is an additional namespace & (probably) as a result my parser isn't working as it should. A version of my parse method is below. Dec 30, 2009So I am looking into Podcasts and RSS Feeds. I have used iTunes in the past to subscribe and watch podcasts, but havent been using iTunes much lately. RSS Feeds I am absolutely new to, and havent yet tried it out. From what I have read RSS Readers (like Google Reader) can subscribe to podcasts, but what about my phone? Would I need a separate RSS reader app, and would it sync with the subscriptions as my PC reader? Are there phone readers that support Video Podcasts?
The other option I saw was to use iTunes and tweak it to allow Podcasts to sync with your Android Device, but Im not sure if this method works with Videos. Im wondering which path is better and easier to manage? It seems easier to find and subscribe to videos using iTunes, but if there is another way, Im all for ditching iTunes completely. I am setting up Googe Reader for RSS feeds either way, I guess thats a separate issue, what I am mainly concerned with is syncing RSS feeds with my phone, and watching Video Podcasts on my Phone.
