Sprint HTC Hero :: Podcasts - RSS Feeds And Android
Dec 30, 2009
So I am looking into Podcasts and RSS Feeds. I have used iTunes in the past to subscribe and watch podcasts, but havent been using iTunes much lately. RSS Feeds I am absolutely new to, and havent yet tried it out. From what I have read RSS Readers (like Google Reader) can subscribe to podcasts, but what about my phone? Would I need a separate RSS reader app, and would it sync with the subscriptions as my PC reader? Are there phone readers that support Video Podcasts?
The other option I saw was to use iTunes and tweak it to allow Podcasts to sync with your Android Device, but Im not sure if this method works with Videos. Im wondering which path is better and easier to manage? It seems easier to find and subscribe to videos using iTunes, but if there is another way, Im all for ditching iTunes completely. I am setting up Googe Reader for RSS feeds either way, I guess thats a separate issue, what I am mainly concerned with is syncing RSS feeds with my phone, and watching Video Podcasts on my Phone.

I was hoping that we could get a good list of Podcasts going that people enjoy. I really enjoy listening to them, but don't really know what to look for when I search google's "Listen" app. Lets get some suggestions and descriptions going!

I'm using the SAX parser to read some RSS feeds and have found a problem. Some feeds, for example CNN Money Top Stories, have embedded some characters in their content, i.e. the copyright symbol. Well, that's not valid XML and the SAX Parser fails with an exception "invalid token". The only help I have seen given is to fix the XML at the source and that's not an option obviously. So, I can think of 2 options and they both stink:
(a) read the content first, scrub it, and then pass it to the parser.
(b) Use DOM instead of SAX.
What I *want* to do is make the parser a little more forgiving and just accept or discard/ignore the bad text. I'm not have any luck with setErrorHandler. My error handler does not get called.

I'm trying to write an XML parser that takes an RSS feed & fetches the image urls shown in the url attribute of the <media:thumbnail> tag. This is all being done via android.Util.Xml, & is an adaptation of the code shown here. An example RSS feed that I'm trying to use is the BBC News RSS feed. However, media is an additional namespace & (probably) as a result my parser isn't working as it should. A version of my parse method is below. Is there any (no doubt simple) way to get my list of image URLs working?

I use Newsrob, and curious as to what seems to be the most popular way to download RSS feeds for offline use? Do you download Articles / Articles + Images / Articles + Images + Mobile Web Page / Articles + Images + Web Pages?

I am trying to parse a RSS2.0 feed, obtained from a remote server, on my Android device using XML Pull Parser.
get a parser instance and set input,encoding
XmlPullParser parser = Xml.newPullParser();
parser.setInput(getInputStream(), null);
I am getting invalid token exceptions after a few items have been parsed:
Error parsing document. (position:line
-1, column -1) caused by: org.apache.harmony.xml.ExpatParser$ParseException:
At line 158, column 25: not
well-formed (invalid token)
Strangely, when I download the feed XML on the device, bundle it inside the raw folder and then run the same code. Everything works fine. What could be the problem here? How do I validate the XML before I parse it on device?

Essentially, I am looking for a podcatcher that will work with casts requiring authentication (HTTPS). I have several classes I would like to grab the feeds for, but require a login/password and none of the podcatchers I have tried work (Listen, DoggCatcher...etc). It doesn't have to be fancy, I just want something to listen to lectures on while on the fly and not have to worry about constantly syncing with a computer.

I have several subscribe-to podcast feeds in Google Reader. When hit 'refresh' in Listen, no feeds or podcasts ever appear. Is there a setting I need to change? I realize this is part of 'Labs', but seeing there are many who use this app, it must be something I'm overlooking.

What is the best RSS reader? I want to be able to read full stories off line after they've been downloaded. I've tried AP Mobile and Express News, they both have ugly GUI and rarely update - properly. Looking for a nice GUI and some default feeds.

after installing 2.2 on my hero, everything was working fine, until now. im having problems with my text messages, they wont send under sprints network, if i put it in roaming then they send right away, but roaming has awefully slow (1x) network speeds, but if i put it back to the 3g network speeds of sprint then everytime i try to send a text it just swirls in circles (the little thing next to the message) and wont send. is this sprints network being down? or does this have to do with the 2.2 update?i dont think its sprint because my mom and sister arent having any problems with there phones from the same plan. but i tryed restarting many times, taking out and leaving out the battery, putting it in airplane mode and turning that back off to reset connection, iv tryed everything and cant get it to work, so idk what to do, and i dont understand why if it was a software problem with the 2.2 installation, why would they send in roaming but not on sprints network?

I searched up Android 2.1 on Google and I Found a website with Sprint Hero - 2.1 leaked! "Website: Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 Upgrade Leaked" Rumors have been flying around the web about Spring releasing an official Android 2.1 upgrade for their HTC Hero mobile phone.The dates for the Android 2.1 upgrade for the Spring HTC Hero have been speculated to be either on April 29th, and others simply by the end of April.But according to BlogsDNA.com, hackers at XDA Developers forum have leaked a Sprint HTC Hero test ROM marked:
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test The stands for Radio Unit Update, and is a common package that HTC phones of all kinds use, from Windows Mobile Phones to Android Roms.Without a doubt, the remaining days in the month of April building up to be full of high profile mobile phone announcements.Expected this month (April) are the HTC Incredible and Nexus One at Verizon, and now this, the Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 upgrade.
Rumors were also spreading about a possible iPhone / Verizon deal being announced.We ve already had the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement.And of course, I would be remiss to leave out the iPad announcement from Apple.

iv heard ppl who downloaded android 2.2 online and installed it themselves on there phone since its not being offered ota. but im wondering if its safe? the phone is not actually getting 2.2 ever, so doing this would be my own choice. but im wondering if it will run smoothly, better than 2.1 update 1, and if there will be any problems or if anything that may not work because of compatability problems with the phone. because some people have said that 2.2 isnt being released to the hero because the phone is not physically capeable of it do to software and hardware (such as space ram speeds etc.), and others have said they installed it themselves and it works fine, that its actually made to run using less space then 2.1 making it better.

Does anyone else want the stock (white) nofication bar on the Sprint Hero? If any one has it on their please share how to get it. I think because its a HTC phone it is made with the black bar, but is their anyway to extract the APK from any other android phone if such a file exists and just install it on the Hero, I really prefer the white one.

I have read a couple of threads that touched on this ring issue, but was unable to find any that had a solution or work around.Since the 2.1 update and the OTA update, many times when an incoming call comes, the phone doesn't ring. If I happen to be in front of the phone, I can see the screen change showing an incoming call.If I am listening to Pandora Radio, when the phone rings, Pandora stops, but the phone never rings.If I am not near or looking at the phone this results in missing the call.If I shut off the phone and re-boot it appears to ring fine, but at some point later in the day or week it will quit ringing.I normally never turn off the phone. Should I start to re-boot every day?

Anyone know of a decent podcast app that will download podcasts (preferably at user defined scheduled times) to your phone (even better the SD card)? My old Nokia n95 did this perfectly, but haven't seen such an app for the Android. I have seen some that will stream, but I don't care for streaming, I'm looking for it to download the podcasts.

Its really obnoxious. It doesn't matter if make sure and unselect 'sync music' and only have one particular podcast checked, it will sync everything. All podcasts, entire music library, everytime. I cant for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong and its pretty damn annoying because of how much longer it takes to do it, when really if it would sync just what I wanted it to, it would take less than 5 minutes. At least WinAMP is out and perhaps will be a better solution than this buggy app Doubletwist. This is my last time dealing with it unless I find a home-run solution.

I am new to android and the desire, just upgraded from a nokia N96. I am running 2.2 android. A couple of questions regarding Rss feeds.
1. From the home screen, I can slide the screen to the left, twice and add a news feed. Can I add more than one feed here, and how can I change the one I have?
2. In "all apps > news" can I delete any of the pre installed news feeds?

I regularly download Podcasts which I then play as MP3's on my current HTC TYTN2. Rather than download to the laptop then transfer to the new Desire I would rather download directly to the Desire but when I go to the Podcast I want - on the BBC site, the instructions of 'Right Click and Save as Target' don't apply.
If I click that instead it simply plays the Podcast - which I don't want. What I really want is to be able to download the Podcast/MP3 directly to my phone SD card - is there an app which would help or am I forced to download via the laptop?
