Motorola Droid :: Increase Homescreen WO Custom Rom Or Home App?

May 13, 2010

I have a rooted driod 2.1 and wanted to know if there was a way to increase the home screen from 3 to 5+ without using a custom rom or home launcher. Modify a preference file or something? I have tried a few launchers and prefer the stock one.

Android :: Writing Custom Homescreen / Launcher

Jun 11, 2009

I'm interesting in writing a custom homescreen and launcher. By launcher, i mean the list of apps that appear when you push the menu button from the homescreen.

Are these two different native applications (homescreen and launcher)? Or is the menu that pops up part of the homescreen application.

Further, It there some Intent I could declare in my app that would instruct android to load my launcher / homescreen app instead of the native one, or would this require me to reimplement from source and build a custom platform?

HTC Legend :: Way To Create Custom Homescreen Contact Folders?

Aug 19, 2010

I've seen a few posts about this but nothing to say definitively (thank god for spell check!) if it's possible or not. On my HTC Legend (HTC Sense with Android 2.1) if you go to add and folder from a homescreen you have a choice of All people, Facebook Phonebook, Phones, Starred (Favorites). Is it possible to create another folder that will hold members of a contact group that I have created? I can create a new empty folder but don't know how to put contacts into this instead of other home screen icons (this would do if I can't use contact groups).

Android :: Exit Current Activity To Homescreen (without Using Home Button)?

May 3, 2010

What I am trying to do is emulating the "Home" button which takes one back to Android's homescreen. So here is what causes me problems: I have 3 launcher activities. The first one (which is connected to the homescreen icon) is just a (password protected) configuration activity. It will not be used by the user (just admin) One of the other 2 (both accessed via an app widget) is a questionnaire app. I'm allowing to jump back between questions via the Back button or a GUI back button as well. When the questionnaire is finished I sum up the answers given and provide a "Finish" button which should take the user back to the home screen.

For the questionnaire app I use a single activity (called ItemActivity) which calls itself (is that recursion as well when using intents?) to jump from one question to another:

Questionnaire.serializeToXML();
Intent i = new Intent().setClass(c, ItemActivity.class);
if(Questionnaire.instance.getCurrentItemNo() == Questionnaire.instance.getAmountOfItems()) {
Questionnaire.instance.setCompleted(true);
} else Questionnaire.instance.nextItem();
startActivity(i);

The final screen shows something like "Thank you for participating" as well as the formerly described button which should take one back to the homescreen. But I don't really get how to exit the Activity properly. I've e.g. used this.finish(); but this strangely brings up the "Thank you" screen again. So how can I just exit by jumping back to the homescreen?

General :: Remove Old Shortcut Icons From Homescreen During Custom ROM Installation?

Mar 16, 2012

Issue with a custom ROM I've been playing around with in an attempt at customizing it to meet my personal needs.

Basically, the custom ROM installation removes old, unwanted .apk's from the stock image it is replacing. This is done by a script/command in the META-INF->com->google->android->updater-script file. Here's an excerpt as an example:

Code:
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "/system");
show_progress(1, 100);
package_extract_dir("system", "/system");delete("/system/app/Launcher2.apk");

However, while the script works perfectly to remove the actual apk's/apps from the device, once the custom ROM is loaded, the old shortcuts (to some of the apps that were uninstalled) remain on the homescreen (these shortcuts are placed there by default by the stock ROM). If you try to tap the shortcut, it simply states something to the effect of "this application is not installed on your device". While these "dead" shortcuts can be moved to the trash bin and deleted from the homescreen, it'd be nice if I could make it so the custom ROM installation automatically does this.

I've tried modifying the Launcher2.apk to reflect the changes I am looking for; but to no avail. In the Launcher2 /res/xml/default_workspace.xml file, I am easily able to specify which apps I do want shortcuts placed on the homescreen for during the installation. But - there doesn't seem to be a way for me to issue a command to remove the old, unwanted shortcuts and these "dead" shortcuts are present nonetheless, despite whatever changes I make to the default_workspace.xml (it does add my "new" shortcuts, though).

Any way that this could be done during the actual custom ROM installation process? And where would I add it to (default_workspace.xml, Android Manifest.xml, framework-res.apk, boot.img...

Android : Handcent To HomeScreen - Apps Vanished When Press Home Button

May 13, 2010

I have the motorola droid. I got the handcent app because I really like all the customization options within it. However, lately I have been having this annoying problem. Sometimes when I have just sent a message, when I press the home button to return to the homescreen, it goes home but all my apps have vanished. I can go through my menu and replace them all to where they were, or I can reboot the phone and that usually corrects it. It is still annoying and is really putting me off the app. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know if there is a specific cause or how I can correct it?

Motorola Droid : Best Homescreen App - JUST For More Than 3 Screens?

Mar 18, 2010

Well we've pretty much all heard by now that 2.1 will not be including any more than 3 Home screens. I was REALLY hoping for 5, as 3 is not enough and I'd like more room to play with Widgets. Even with folders and some snazzy organizing it's still not great.

What's the status on Home Screen Replacement Apps? All I know about it Home++ but last I read it was pretty buggy and Force Closed quite a bit. I'm not looking for anything crazy I really just simply want more than 3 screens, 5-7 ideally...are there any apps out there that handle just this?

Motorola Droid :: Update Homescreen Application?

Feb 3, 2010

I know we're getting 5 homescreens in 2.1. still no idea when we'll get that update! last I heard Motorola was in their final testing phase and at that Nexus One conference the head of Moto said the same.. within a few days it should have been ported. Har har we all knew that wasn't happening that quick. I've got my 3 homescreens maxed, and I really would like to use a homescreen app to have more. I don't want to sacrifice stability and I don't need crazy features, I'm simply looking to just go up to 5-7 screens so I can test some larger widgets out in the meantime. I'm not rooted and I don't really want to either. What's best? Home++?

Motorola Droid :: Icons Disappear On Homescreen

May 18, 2010

I've done the searching and nothing has solved my problem and the last time this was brought as far as I can tell was back in December. My issue is that there is no consistent time when this happens. Sometimes it happens as I unlock the homescreen, as I'm exiting out of an application, as I rotate the screen, and even as I'm shifting between home screens. It also happens randomly based off of my last reset. Since it started (about a month ago) it has happened as long as 3 days after my last reset and sometimes as soon as 20 minutes after. I've tried installing the Home++ application but that did not solve the problem either. Does anyone know of a setting or way to bring the icons back without having to reset the phone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Motorola Droid :: Increase Battery Life?

Oct 20, 2009

I'm not too familiar with the Android OS, and the Droid may be my first Android device. From what I've gathered so far, battery life seems to be an issue with Android devices. I've had 3 different BlackBerrys for a couple of years now and for the most part, battery life has been good or acceptable. My question is, will the Droid suffer from battery life issues as do other Android devices, or will Motorola have a magic formula that increases it? I've read that BGR says battery life is supposed to be "very, very good." But I'm not sure I believe them. They have a way of exaggerating how good a device is, especially if no other reviewer has that device, to make it seem like they have something very special (probably to get more readers).
