Motorola Droid :: Getting Really Hot - Couldn't Stand To Hold It Against Ear To Make A Call
Dec 9, 2009
My Droid was in its leather carrying case in my backpack for about an hour while I was at the gym. When I pulled it out it was hot. Not warm, but hot. I couldn't stand to hold it against my ear to make a call.
When I pulled up the battery usage it did not appear to be anything out of the ordinary. The keyboard was locked when I pulled it out of the case so that eliminates errant keypresses opening up a bunch of apps and making calls while it was in there.

The problem is, when im in a call and i receive a second call (call waiting), i switch over and back...but i have no way of ending either call individually...even if the second caller hangs up the phone. My phone will continue say that i have a call on hold...is this a known issue or is it just me?

I get another call while I am on the phone. Go to answer the other call let them know I will call them back later...other caller hangs up and then the call just hangs there in dead air. So now both of my lines are occupied while I am only talking to 1 person.PLEASE let me know if there is a fix to this issue because it is a big deal for me. If there is no fix I might have to return the EVO for another phone honestly, its essential for my line of work.

I currently have widget for my app Hire*A*Droid bundled with the main application. I would like to unbundle the widget and release it as a separate offering. However - the widget is relying on Activities from the main app so I need to navigate between these two mainly calling particular Activity of the main app from the widget. So the basic idea - app can work without widget and the widget becomes the "add-on" option.
What is the "right" way to call app activities from the stand-alone widget? Do I convert the main app into a content provider? Can you point me to any code samples perhaps?
P.S. I'm not asking how to call Activities from the widget that is bundled in the same APK. The question specifically states that widget is distributed separately from the app it's calling

I went to make a call and my Droid was off. I had checked email on it about two hours prior and had 80% battery life. When I got home I plugged it into the charger and nothing. Hit the power button, still nothing. Finally took out the battery and put it back in while still on the charger and finally it turned back on, with about the same battery life it had when I checked my email.
Then I tried to make a phone call and it simply would not make the call. I killed all tasks and tried again with no luck. Then the same text came through eight times. I turned the phone off and on again and the problem persisted. Finally about a half an hour later after leaving the phone alone, it seemed to be working fine. Made calls, texts, etc with no problems. An hour after that the phone shut off again. I had to take out the battery and put it back in again, and after about ten minutes it was working normally. This was about an hour ago.

what is the best way to make a phone call?I am coming from a BB Curve and when I wanted to call my husband, I just pushed the letter T (his name is Tim) and it would pop up with my T contacts and I would hit go and it would call him. Now, on the droid, I hit the phone icon, then hit contacts, then scroll through all the way down to T and select him there. Is there a better way? And I did search the forums, but the questions having to do with making calls were all way more complicated than this one!

So I am traveling to UK next week for business. Is there a way to use the GPS stand alone?I wanted to use the APP Sporty Pal but when I turn off the radio the app just spins and has "Initializing GPS" and then times out. I have tried to do this with WiFi connect also to see if it needed something data wise to get started but same results.Any ideas or other apps that track your runs that can use GPS only?

I've been using bluetooth lately to connect to my car and talk while driving. When I'm finished talking, and the other person hangs up, I can't turn my screen back on. Bluetooth must still be connected because my car radio won't come back on, almost like the phone call is still going on. Only way to get my screen back on is to take the battery out.

I would like to write an app that will put the current call on hold, then add a new call. Since this can be done by manually pressing buttons, I would think there is a way to do it programmatically, but I cannot find anything in the sdk.=

I have had Google voice for a while now. And yesterday I added a line into my plan and got the Droid. I downloaded Google voice app and everytime I try to place a call it tells me I am unable to make the call. I did set my new number as the phone being used. Any suggestions? Or is there something up with Google voice?

I'm still a noob droid owner so maybe I just don't get it but here are some things that drive me nuts with the contacts interface.please note* I have (2) gmail email accounts, and a facebook account.
1. some of my contacts say they have "profiles" linked. so I tap the profiles and it will say for example "google: bob, google: bob, phone contacts: bob" why? I don't want anything linked. I feel like I don't have any control over my contacts.
2. I noticed that my fiance is a contact "julia" and then today I noticed another contact with her full name and a picture. so I ctapped that to investigate and it was her facebook info and email. where the heck did that come from? why on earth would I want more than one option for her as a contact?I am really lost. I mean REALLY lost. it took me a while to figure out how to make contact groups, so that I can organize some of my professional contacts but the rest of this is killing me. I created a new professional contact which happens to be a pest control guy. I chose to create a new contact. I entered his name and phone number, also email address. then I saved it. then when I looked at it somehow it had 3 linked profiles like what I was saying in point #1 above. what the heck? Why can't I just have a contact list period. and the only thing in this contact list are contacts which were entered into the phone by me. for each contact, I have the option to store their many numbers, email, etc. so when I tap on contacts, I get a contacts list and not a thousand people some of which are duplicates, some of which are emails I've responded to in gmail who I never talk to like customerservice@whateverbusiness.com.I'm mystified. can someone explain to me that either I am confused or this system is over complicated?

If I am on a call and get a second, incoming call. Second call will take a while, so I switch back to first call and say, "Ill call you back." I can't seem to switch to the second call and have the first call drop off, such that there's no longer a "call waiting" screen, EVEN IF the first caller hangs up himself/herself. How can I end the call on hold WITHOUT ending both calls?

When I make a call there is a short, odd ring-tone that occurs just after I press Dial and before the normal ringing sound begins to indicate the call is going through.
It's about 1/2 second long, can be quite loud sometimes, and is kind of high-pitched....sorry, it's hard to describe. The tone modulates up and down quite fast - da-dum-da-dum-dum (if you can imagine).
I tried re-programming the phone, and also updating roaming, and it's still there every time I make a call. I haven't made any changes to call settings to speak of...never had this on my D1.

Is anyone having serious problems with their call waiting? When I get a call while in a current call, my phone automatically puts the first call on hold, and answers the second call without giving me the option.

Is it just me, or does anyone else's battery cover come off way too easily? I'll accidentally slide it off when pulling my phone out of my pocket all the time... and sometimes it gets pulled off in my pocket so I take the phone out and the cover falls on the ground I really don't want to put a case on my phone just to hold the damn battery cover on.

I use Google Voice (love it) primarily because of it's visual voicemail on my Droid. I do have a Google Voice number, and I'm trying to decide whether to set the Droid app to "make calls using Google Voice" or not.
I have no problem with giving out a different number, and my placed calls seeing the GV number in caller ID.
My question is, does this affect how the call is actually connected, from a quality standpoint? I tired a call both ways, and the sound quality seemed a little bit different. But then, I am an obsessive compulsive weirdo.
Is there any difference in call quality or routing between making a native Verizon call and a Google Voice call on Droid? (Like, does Google voice actual use 3G to connect to Google server over the internetz, then place the phone call?)

I am going crazy here... I've had this thing since it launched and everything is great except I keep hitting buttons with my face during calls! I mute, sometimes end calls, start 3 way calls etc and I have no idea how to prevent it. Is there any way I can make the screen lock during phone calls or change the call screen altogether?

I have been having a lot of problems with my DX. Verizon told me that some of my issues would be solved if my phone were pre-loaded with 2.2 instead of having a phone that was upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2. So they sent me a new phone and told me that it would be pre-loaded with 2.2. When the phone arrived, it had 2.1 on it.
Do I keep the new phone and use it with 2.1? Do I keep the new phone and ugrade it to 2.2 to see if it's better than my old phone. Do I keep my old phone?
If you could do it all over again, would you upgrade to 2.2?
If you are interested, my problem 2 biggest problems are:
1) My phone doesn't seem to hold a 3g signal. It regularly drops from 3g to 1x and back to 3g. The phone goes 4 bars to 1 bar and back again.
2) My phone consantly missings emails. You can see the emails in my inbox if I go through a brower, but the email app doesn't show them no matter how many times I refresh.

I am a happy Verizon customer that doesn't ante-up the extra $ to make calls on the few trips that send me to Canada. I heard that there might be an app or website that lets u make free calls through ur WiFi connection (at my hotel, for example) when I'm up there on business... Anyone know anything about this? Is there a way to run the WiFi only and not ANY other phone functions>>> (mobile network AND receiving calls or texts)..... so that I wouldn't get charged for incoming calls and messages?
