Motorola Droid X :: Root With Linux As Operating System
Oct 15, 2010
I'm trying to root my damn Droid X (pardon my frustration; It's been a long, uncooperative day). First I tried the method found here: Multiple phones - Root them, unroot them - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
I tried using Step 2 Option A, since I don't have Windows on any computer I own or have access to. I get to the following part before it doesn't work properly:

When I do a search on the android marketplace, it doesn't show up.I assume its because of the older OS.Help please!Didn't know I was getting such an old phone?

I am having issues with my application when a user gets a system update (for example from 2.1 to 2.2). i am wondering how I can reproduce this experience on a phone (Nexus One). does this involve rooting the phone and then applying a system update? I need the update to look as though it came from the system. In other words, I can't take a full ROM image, because then I think I would lose my application being installed between upgrades.

I was just thinking that one day in the near future we will have Google operating systems on all of our devices i.e. phone, laptop, and tablet/pad. I am not sure what if any difference between Chrome and Android and how this will affect the likes of Microsoft and Apple. I believe that you can now download the complete Chrome operating system and install it on our laptops etc. See this link Google Android OS Now Available For Download. What are your thoughts on google operating systems.

I'm looking to Unlock and Root my Huawei g600, (specifically the U8950N-51). However I'm using Linus OS, (Mint 14 KDE).
I've got the unlock code from Huawei, at least I hope because U8950N-51 because the international webpage doesn't recognize the U8950N-51.
Using Wine does not work as the unlock method just hangs looking for a device. (This method: [URL]

Wahoo first post! I've had an account for a while but have been lurking and soaking up information. I'm going to root my phone (hopefully today) but I am running Linux on all my PCs, and do not actually have a windows install. I wanted to ask if anyone knew if the ADB commands can just be run straight from a terminal window from my Linux box, since it seems ADB is just a terminal emulator on windows to be able to talk to the phone. It seems like I'm missing something though, I would think ADB would do more than that but let me know if I'm in the wrong. I'd like to root my phone from my Linux box but if i need to find a windows machine I could probably do it from work. I was trying to find some sort of tutorial for ADB on Linux but could not find anything, even installed the SDK for Linux and have access to ADB but am not sure how to get ADB to see my phone after going through the tutorials. I would not be surprised if I missed something as I can be a little dense at times.

I've been looking for information about using ext and linux swap partitions today and thought I would ask here from more experienced users. If I understand things right most ppl use the ext partition for apps2sd but with froyo this is build in. So is there any further benefit to creating an ext2/3 partition? I've also read a few items on the linux swap partitions and its usefulness on older phones like the g1 but with the droid is this even needed? Arguments can be made for and against the linux swap but im looking for opinions or experience using it with the droid.
I know some roms make use of these from time to time but is there any benefit to using either type of partition on a rooted droid running the stock os. I try roms from time to time but stock seems to suit me better since I can run the wifi teather and overclock my droid up to 1.2Ghz and then remove the stock apps I don't want.

i successfully got into adb in recovery mode fairly easily on my ubuntu 10.4 laptop using the following method- this should also work for a linux live boot from a usb flash drive
in one terminal tail and follow log messages
~$ tail -f /var/log/messages
In another terminal run the loop
Then
1. plugin usb and keep it plugged in
2. remove battery, eject sd card.
3. put battery in
4. press vol- and power
5. after around 6 seconds, your terminal with the log will show something like "new high speed USB..."
6. press vol- to select recovery
7. press the power button
8. IMPORTANT- as soon as you see a new log entry (something like "USB disconnect"), pop in the sd card
check your loop terminal for adb. if it doesn't work, repeat at step 2

Here is the scenario:
Motorola Droid - Original
1. Rooted 2.1, then
2. OTA Stock Update to 2.2, then
3. Seem to have lost root, However - I still have the Superuser Permissions Icon.
I use Barnacle for WiFi Tether - I get a "Permission Denied" error when I try to start the application. I also went into the terminal emulator and tried an "su" which also gave a permission denied response. I tried "sudo" and also got permission denied response. Others have told me this is common with this progression of events. However, How do I now ROOT 2.2 in this scenario?

I used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

I'm trying to gain root and having some problems...
I had my droid rooted for some time, running droid mod 1.0. All was well until recently the battery life turned to shit (followed all guides to resolve recent OTA update issues, but still shitty.) Because of this, I decided I would go back to stock, since I couldn't justify the rom's features if the battery would kick out after 16 hours. So I returned to stock no problem and received the OTA to upgrade to 2.1.
After getting the upgrade to 2.1, I wanted to at least have root access to run a few programs. I followed this guide:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html
to get SPRecovery back on my phone. Everything went well, it all checked out. After that I used SPRecovery to install the root update.zip. This worked fine, the root access app is in my tray and everything seems to be fine... HOWEVER when opening programs that require root access (setcpu and adfree are the ones I've tried) they say I don't have root access. I have tried reinstalling the update.zip file to no luck. USB debugging is ON. Is there a special update.zip to gain root on 2.1 (I saw no posts about that)? Is there some setting I missed this time around that I didn't the first time I rooted?
