Motorola Droid X :: Update 2.2 - Reinstall Bloatware
Aug 20, 2010
I was trying to get my phone prepared to update to 2.2 and I wanted to reinstall the bloatware. I did something stupid. I went into adb shell, went to the system/app folder and did "mv *.bak *.apk" which basically destroyed everything in that folder. At that moment, I tried to RSDLite flash my phone the SBF but it wouldn't take. Phone froze up, couldn't do anything and, of course, I get the Droid animation when booting infinitely due to nothing being in /system/app I can reboot into recovery and connect the phone to my PC, but nothing really seems to happen. I imagine I could recover the phone if someone made an update.zip which restored the default apps into the /system/app folder, but I don't have an update.zip of that nature. Even the Verizon ones I have seem to look for old versions of the files. Does anyone have or can tailor an update.zip which would restore the system/app folder for me? I think that, if you could do that, I could be saved. Otherwise, I think I am screwed, unless someone has another option for me.

I did not realize that we wouldn't be able to use the OTA if we removed bloatware.. I guess I didn't read that section/warning.. What can I do to get the OTA?

I updated my Milestone last week and all was working ok. I decided to root the phone today and ended up in some constant re-boot loop where the android logo would appear then reset. I managed to get the phone working again after several hours of worry, but there still seems to be some issues. I would like to remove the 2.0.1 update and re-install it again from frest so that i can fully remove this root access and hopefully my problems.

Really enjoying the new Droid X so far (my first smartphone), but I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of all this horrible bloatware. I cannot even see the apps to uninstall through the settings on the phone, and trying to uninstall them through appbrain just gives an uninstall error. Anyone know if it's possible to remove them?

I still cannot add an account to gmail. If I delete the Gmail app, is there a way to reinstall it? If in fact I can uninstall it. Actually it's a Google account that I can't add. I can add a gmail acct via the corporate email client.

OK just like the stock messenger i am having a problem now with the stock phone app, if i try to add a line during a call, the second i click call the app freezes up, then i get a wait or FC option, i have clicked wait over and over to see if it eventually does something, and no it doesn't. then after i do that if someone calls me when i go to slide to answer it will slide and then it freezes at the end of the slide, call is answered though. now with the messenger i replaced it with the handscent sms, works wonders. is there a phone app? or a way to reinstall the phone app.

When I originally rooted my phone (I had 2.1 at the time), I was able to remove all the bloatware i didnt want by going into Root Explorer and changing each application's file extension from .apk to .bak.
Now, with Froyo, I tried to do the same thing, but the only apps that show up in /data/app are the ones that I have installed off the market.
Am I looking in the correct directory? How do I go about removing all this crap in Froyo?

I have been a big fan of android since I heard about it a few years ago and when my carrier finally got a android phone I jumped at it. The day the Motorola droid came out I bought it. The Motorola Droid is a great device and I am really happy with it. Fast forward last week I bought a Droid X for my girl friend and at first we both thought it was an amazing device. But after using it some more I noticed all the CRAP that comes with the phone.(she will never use skype and all the other junk) I am mad at google for letting companys like Motorola add all this useless crap on a phone with no way of removing it. Also the battery only lasts a few hours with only twitter and facebook installed on the device? Without rooting it does anyone else know a way to remove these apps?

Something freaked up the Motorola CarDock app, and when I start it starts to launch and then goes to a blank screen and then back to my home screen. I don't want to do a factory reset just yet and the Car Dock app in the market is not good enough for me (can't do quick calls like with the Motorla app, have to click twice to make a call etc). I have no idea what else could be interfering with it, I have a bunch of apps, but I am on the stock home screen.

Moto was all about stating how unobtrusive this me blur was but from a quick look with system tools all the bloat and the blur of. Taking up more system memory then sense UI. Is there any way to stop them so they don't just start back up again, I'm using launcher pro but the Moto home keeps running in the background and it comes back even after force closes through task managers.

I rooted my Droid X yesterday, used Titanium Backup to backup all apps + system data, reset to factory defaults (still rooted it seems), then tried to restore the bloatware apps. Now the bloatware wont reinstall from Titanium, but regular apps do. Am I missing something or will this take a bit of work to get these bloatware apps back on so I can get to 2.2? Can it be done with Astro FIle Manager? I don't see how to set permissions.

if anyone else who was unfortunate enough to install the latest vf 'update' noticed that all of their sms messages had been duplicated! which as you can image is a pain in the parts if like me you have alot of messages. I have managed to sort out a work around for this. I used 'sms backup and restore' SMS Backup & Restore - Android app on AppBrain to create an xml of all my sms messages I then wrote a quick vb.net program which checks the xml file for any messages with duplicate timestamps and message contents and removes the duplicate. Then you can just restore the edited xml file. I realise some people might be dubious about using an exe file which someone posts on a forum but i have attached it anyway if anyone wants to use it. I could post the code if anyone wants. Anyway just thought that it might help some of those unfortunate souls like myself who foolishly 'updated' their desire

I've rooted my phone and used TitaniumBackup to remove the AT&T bloatware. I've also configured it for sideloading apps so I could load the SiriusXM app from their website. Of course - now I can't get the OTA update. I just get the error where it says it's downloading, restarts the phone, says it's installing then reboots the phone again and says the update failed.
Maybe the OTA update is trying to update one of the bloatware apps and that's why it's failing? Or would removing the Superuser app (unrooting) and Busybox be enough to get the update?
Either way - because I deleted the apps using TitaniumBackup I have no backup (I know, I'm an idiot). I thought I did a TB backup before removing the apps but I have no idea where to look to restore them. They aren't listed in the app list when I click on Backup/Restore.

I have ultimate droid "newest" and helix launcher, and im having a problem where it wont let me use the option to attach recorded audio in a text message. it just force closes every time. even if i try to send it by finding the file in astro and clicking send to message. it just force closes, any fixes or anyone else have this problem.
restarting it didn't fix it.
should i reinstall messenger? how?
and is there a way to select multiple contacts from a contact list to send a forwarded message to? like on normal vzw phones "not smart phone" or is typing the persons name the only thing you can do.

I have asked this on the bloatware thread, and I've only seen one person mention that they have seen an improvement (BringTheRain403). I know a lot of you have removed most of the bloatware by now.
Do you see a noticeable increase in performance or battery life after removing the bloatware? By removing, I mean freezing the apk's in Titanium Backup. I don't really have a problem with this stuff being on the phone, but if it will noticeably help to remove it, then I definitely will.

I notice that my app's data on external storage (i.e. SD card) gets deleted during an "adb install -r". While this is normal for uninstall (and then afterwards install optionally to notice it), I do not understand why this is the case for reinstall (and thus for Market updates as well). I could have sworn this was not always the case.
Referring to http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesExternal I am specifically using "Accessing files on external storage" on Android 2.2, but not "Saving files that should be shared" or "Saving cache files". So I am writing and reading data in "/sdcard/Android/data//files/somefolder/data". My preferences do stick.
@Commonsware: The problem is not so much with getExternalFilesDir() IMHO as I see my data is written where I expect it. It just does not stick. I am using a.o.:
public static File getDefaultDirectory(Context context, String packageName) { File dir;
if(mActivity_getExternalFilesDir!=null){//API >=8
dir = invokeGetExternalFilesDir(context, "fortune");
}else if(mEnvironment_getExternalStorageDirectory!=null){//API <=7
dir = invokeGetExternalStorageDirectory();
dir = new File(dir.getPath() + "/Android/data/" + packageName + "/files/");
}else{ //should never occur return null;
}return dir;
}

I got ballsy and since T-Mo is sending me a new phone since this one is Hardware locked and I can't get into ODIN, I opened up mini Kies and got the new firmware. All it did was re-install all the bloat I deleted before and got rid of root.
I don't know if this is universal or I got lucky, but it worked. It hung on the Galaxy S screen for about a minute, but after that it's awesome.
I see 12 Sats indoors and I connect to 7. Outside I see 13 and I connect to 11.
Vibrant is the best phone I've ever owned after this GPS update.
