Motorola Droid X :: Benefits Over Just Removing Bloatware In Place And Not Invoking Them?
Sep 24, 2010
There's a lot of posting going on about removing bloatware, but, other than un-cluttering the apps drawer, what are the benefits over just leaving them in place and not invoking them?

I have been a big fan of android since I heard about it a few years ago and when my carrier finally got a android phone I jumped at it. The day the Motorola droid came out I bought it. The Motorola Droid is a great device and I am really happy with it. Fast forward last week I bought a Droid X for my girl friend and at first we both thought it was an amazing device. But after using it some more I noticed all the CRAP that comes with the phone.(she will never use skype and all the other junk) I am mad at google for letting companys like Motorola add all this useless crap on a phone with no way of removing it. Also the battery only lasts a few hours with only twitter and facebook installed on the device? Without rooting it does anyone else know a way to remove these apps?

I have a rooted Droid X running the 2.2 leak. I want to remove apps by renaming them to .bak files but I can't seem to do it with root explorer. Can someone help me manually rename the files by providing a list of comment prompt inputs?

I have asked this on the bloatware thread, and I've only seen one person mention that they have seen an improvement (BringTheRain403). I know a lot of you have removed most of the bloatware by now.
Do you see a noticeable increase in performance or battery life after removing the bloatware? By removing, I mean freezing the apk's in Titanium Backup. I don't really have a problem with this stuff being on the phone, but if it will noticeably help to remove it, then I definitely will.

I basically have no idea what I'm doing so I take no responsibility for how you use the information below, nor any responsibility for any issues it might cause. After following the rooting process and installing Titanium Backup and the 1-Click Lag Fix. I decided to explore and I was actually able to remove some of the bloatware apps without being in recovery mode. After obtaining root ADB Shell (the shell with a # sign instead of a $) I basically did the following commands:
[Code]

Simple question. Is there an app out there, that is NOT a battery hog, and keeps services off...OR is there a way to get rid of the bloatware on the SF WITHOUT rooting?

Brand new Samsung Galaxy Rugby from Rogers, rooted it and began removing bloatware via Titanium Backup. I backed up and uninstalled Samsung Home, then I uninstalled SNS 1.0 without backing up. One of these two are now causing my BRAND NEW phone to not boot up anymore. It just gets stuck at the Samsung loading screen.
I have gone into recovery mode and wiped data and factory reset, which will get me to the Android startup wizard, but after it's completed, it crashes and I get Android with no Home launcher. Completely unusable...
What can I do?! There doesn't seem to be any custom firmwares for this phone yet, so is there something generic I can use to put either stock Android on it or a custom ROM in place of this broken Samsung ROM?
I wish there was something I could do with the launcher backups in my TitaniumBackup folder on my SDcard. I *can* access that...

Since many of us have rooted, installed Roms and have just about every app/aspect of the new 2.1 OS, what will actually be better or even is better by running 2.1? I know flash support will be 2.1-based, but haven't really heard of anything else that many of us do not already have, save maybe a truly functional 2.1 launcher. I do know it's not worth losing root over to even try(to me anyway), so I will most likely wait for a cooked 2.1 ROM after the official release. I'm a little leery of running a "leaked" OS.

I'm using Droidmod and am trying to figure out why I'd want to move to something like Bugless Beast or some of the other 'much talked about' roms. I've got a very stable system. Don't have the 2.1 launcher but heard there's problems with it anyway. I have wireless wifi tethering and wired if I want it. Am using Smoked Glass theme which I really like. I have downloaded some live wallpaper but they eat battery life so don't bother with them. Am OC to 800 stable,1k if I want and when it's plugged in. Have the 'pinch to zoom' browser and gallery. Just what am I missing with these other roms? I cannot see a benefit to jumping to one from this. I'm trying but it just doesn't seem worth the hassle or the risk of getting a unstable platform.

What are the benefits to my D1 if I transfer all of my apps to the SD card? I once tried it, and immediately after my phone started to lag REALLY bad , so I put everything back on the internal memory.
I assume I did something wrong , and would like to know the correct way to do it and why I should.

I'm a nerd at heart I do notice I have to kill apps running in the back ground. Anyone tell me what the benefits of rooting are? Also can I do it on my version? If so, is there a guide?

Really enjoying the new Droid X so far (my first smartphone), but I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of all this horrible bloatware. I cannot even see the apps to uninstall through the settings on the phone, and trying to uninstall them through appbrain just gives an uninstall error. Anyone know if it's possible to remove them?

When I originally rooted my phone (I had 2.1 at the time), I was able to remove all the bloatware i didnt want by going into Root Explorer and changing each application's file extension from .apk to .bak.
Now, with Froyo, I tried to do the same thing, but the only apps that show up in /data/app are the ones that I have installed off the market.
Am I looking in the correct directory? How do I go about removing all this crap in Froyo?

I was trying to get my phone prepared to update to 2.2 and I wanted to reinstall the bloatware. I did something stupid. I went into adb shell, went to the system/app folder and did "mv *.bak *.apk" which basically destroyed everything in that folder. At that moment, I tried to RSDLite flash my phone the SBF but it wouldn't take. Phone froze up, couldn't do anything and, of course, I get the Droid animation when booting infinitely due to nothing being in /system/app I can reboot into recovery and connect the phone to my PC, but nothing really seems to happen. I imagine I could recover the phone if someone made an update.zip which restored the default apps into the /system/app folder, but I don't have an update.zip of that nature. Even the Verizon ones I have seem to look for old versions of the files. Does anyone have or can tailor an update.zip which would restore the system/app folder for me? I think that, if you could do that, I could be saved. Otherwise, I think I am screwed, unless someone has another option for me.

Moto was all about stating how unobtrusive this me blur was but from a quick look with system tools all the bloat and the blur of. Taking up more system memory then sense UI. Is there any way to stop them so they don't just start back up again, I'm using launcher pro but the Moto home keeps running in the background and it comes back even after force closes through task managers.

I rooted my Droid X yesterday, used Titanium Backup to backup all apps + system data, reset to factory defaults (still rooted it seems), then tried to restore the bloatware apps. Now the bloatware wont reinstall from Titanium, but regular apps do. Am I missing something or will this take a bit of work to get these bloatware apps back on so I can get to 2.2? Can it be done with Astro FIle Manager? I don't see how to set permissions.

So, in the past, with 2.1 or 2.2 when I would rename the blurhome.apk to .bak the phone would then run extremely slow and shutter a lot, basically running like crap, with consistently low quadrant scores (800s). Since installing the 2.3.13 leak I tried renaming the blurhome.apk to .bak and have found that it no longer causes the phone to run lousy. Quadrant scores are the same and everything survives a reboot. I figured others might want to know this also.

I posted b this in the troubleshooting forum, but few people look there, I guess. I tried to update mixing and it failed a few times. I didn't think much about it until I decided to spring for the paid version. I bought it, but it wouldn't upload either. So I went to un install mixing in hopes that a fresh re-install would fix the problem, but there's no option to un install. I have my apps backed up, so I tried un installing mixzing that way, but it fails. The app itself works fine. Mixing may have been bundled with UD 9.8, my current ROM, but I'm not sure. I guess ultimately what I need help with is completely removing the app so I can start with a fresh install.(Switching, or even reinstalling the ROM is simply not an option. It takes me days to get my phone back the way I like it.

I used Titanium Backup to freeze, then uninstall some of the bloatware apps on my DX. However, the icons are still found in the app tray and clicking them generates a FC.Is there any way to get rid of the icons permanently? I know I can hide them with LPP but that only hides them; I want to eliminate them.

i've searched around here trying a find an answer and I can't seem to find anything. I was wondering if there was a way to take the applications that are in the drawer and move them to a folder. I don't like that fact that I have all these applications in the drawer, it gets too congested. I would just like to put them in a folder on on of my home screens so its a little bit more cleaned up...
