Jelly Bean :: Android 4.3 / Location Services Battery Drain?

Oct 18, 2013

on my Nexus 4, it seems like the location is checked quite frequently by the phone, even if I'm not using an app that needs location, and even if the screen is off.

I don't want to turn off the Location Services, I just want my location to be obtained when I use Maps.

Anyway I can do that? I have already turned off location for Facebook and other annoying apps using App Ops. I basically don't want my location to be obtained when the screen is off.

Motorola Droid X :: Location Services Improves Reception And Data?

Oct 16, 2010

I went to drill today and most of the people in my unit has a droid x except one person has a droid 2. Well both did a speed test. He was at 2.4mb and I was at 1.3mb so im confused. We start looking through our settings to compare. He is on max battery saver with all location services on. Im on max performance with no location services on. So I turn on wireless network location services and retest. I get 2.2mb just like that. Does anyone know why it would make a difference? Also I noticed his reception was at- 70db while I was at- 82. Can anyone think of why he would have better reception than me?

Motorola Droid X :: "Enable Assisted GPS" / Use Wireless Networks?

Aug 10, 2010

Under settings > location & security settings, there's 3 check boxes for location...1) Use wireless networks, 2) use gps satellites, and 3) "enable assisted gps".Does anyone know what 3) is or does? Is it something to make gps more accurate? I usually run with 1 and 2 enabled. Turned 3 on today and saw a noticeable battery drain but couldn't see what it actually does.

HTC Incredible :: Location Based Services

May 24, 2010

I know there are many posts about location based widgets not working correctly (and I have read lots of them). Some people say they do and others say they don't work right. on my DI I can not get the Sense Weather/Clock to follow where I am currently (GPS on or off). Is it supposed to?? It would seem to me that it should be able to get a rough area based on what cell towers I'm hitting, but that doesn't work for anything. Every weather based widget I've tried works solely off GPS and when I am in my building at work there is no connecting to the GPS Sats. So before I go off on a tangent I'll ask my question(s). Should non-GPS location services work? Or does everything need GPS on and connected? I only have about a week left and I want to make sure that my phone is working correctly before my 30 days are up. This is the only frustrating thing I have found with the phone so far.

Samsung Moment :: Location Services Not Working?

Nov 3, 2009

I have a moment as I traded my Hero in to give it a try since my hero ended up with dead lines on the screen. For the life of me, I cannot get wireless or GPS location services to work.If I use wireless, google maps puts me somewhere over in China and if I try GPS, it never locks. In sprint nav with wireless, I am in Virgina (I'm in Michigan) and GPS never locks. I tried the trick I learned on the hero to disable wireless services until I get a GPS lock at least once, but even that didn't work.

General :: Function Of Various Location Services In Jelly Bean 4.1.2

Jun 16, 2013

I have a HTC One running JB 4.1.2. I am confused by the location settings available in various places in jelly bean. In my previous phone running gingerbread, all the location related settings were under 1 tab. In JB, its under various tabs and apps. I am wondering what purpose some of these settings cater to. I am listing all the location related settings available in JB 4.1 below:

1. settings > Accounts & Sync > Google > Location settings > Let Google apps access your location.I believe this setting has to be enabled for google services such as maps, google now, google+, etc. to function.

2. settings > Location > Google's location service the description is given as 'allows anonymous location data to be sent to google. Also allows permitted apps to use data from sources such as wifi and mobile networks to determine your approximate location.'

settings > Location >Location & Google search.Description: 'Location used to improve google search results and other google services'

3. Google maps > settings > location settings > Under background location reporting > Location reporting (has 3 options: automatically detect my location, update location manually, do not update location)

Google maps > settings > location settings > Under background location reporting > Report from this device. If you use the above location reporting option and use same username for multiple devices, on whichever device you select this option will only report location.

There are also other options under this setting like enable location sharing, enable location history, etc. From my research, i found out if you wish to use maps and like google search results tailored to your location, then 'Let Google apps access your location' and 'Location & Google search' setting need to be enabled. Also for information, i have disabled 'Location reporting' setting listed in No .3 by selecting 'do not update location' and also disabled all other location settings listed in No. 3. But it has not affected google maps, google search, weather, google news.

I wish to know what exactly 'Google's location service' setting listed in 2 and 'Location reporting' setting in 3 does. Which apps do they exist for? I am asking this because some of these location settings i have listed above appear to have similar functionality going by their description (though that would not be the case) and i wish to know the difference. I also wish to safely disable some of these settings to conserve battery but without affecting functionality of apps like maps, search, news, weather.

How can I check for GPS support in-App to add a feature for those with Location services enabled? My concern is, I know I'd have to specify the tag in the manifest to declare that the app uses location services, but I still want the app to function for those without. I just want to check and, if the service is available, use it; otherwise just ignore that one feature.

General :: Google Play Services Update Breaks Location Accuracy

Apr 23, 2014

Phone settings: Location : Battery Saving (GPS off, using Wifi/network location only)

On Google Play Services 4.0.x - I get very accurate location small circle around where my house is.

After updating to 4.2.25 - I get a large circle - maybe the radius of an entire block / surface area of a cell tower coverage roughly

Uninstall the update to play services (back to 4.0.x) - get very accurate location again.

I am using a RAZR HD with 4.4.2 kit kat / CM11.

Did play services update broke my specific phone?

I would stay on the older Play Services but Hangouts and Maps keep bitching about needing to update it.

The problem is that I need the latest version of Google Play Services for streaming videos with my phone to Chromecast (and in any case, Google Play Services will auto update to the latest version).Any same issue with Google Play Services v4.3 ?

I can't believe that Google will not use Standalone GPS services if Wi-Fi & mobile network location is disabled. So, the only way to use Maps is to put the phone in excessive battery drain mode.

General :: How Do Running Services Effect Battery Life And Responsiveness

May 8, 2013

I have been using HTC Desire S for about 2 yrs now, but since I am not a power user, I just use it as it came. Now considering to root it and was looking more closely at things and I see there are many services running in the background under "Running".

I don't know the inner workings of Android system, so would like to know if more services are running (especially from apps which I don't regularly use) then does it effect battery life and does it make the phone slower ?

For example under Calendar, 4 services are running - AutoSettingService, ImmediateModeService, DashboardService,ConnecttoPcService.

Google Maps has TrafficAppWidgetUpdateService and PrefetcherService ( I rarely use Google maps because I use offline rmaps)

Another thing is I have a prepaid connection without a data plan so I would like to control which apps connect to the net when i switch on 3G - i mean I would prefer if only the app which I want to use the data should use it, while others should not.

And there are some things taking data, which i don't really understand - but since they are related to Android system I am not sure whether to try to restrict them (Android System, HTC Function test, HTC Checkin service, Settings storage, VPN, Status bar, Bluetooth, Google backpp transport, etc, Phone, Dialer Storage, SIM toolkit)

Any general idea about these services - battery and network usage and effect on responsiveness ?

Motorola Droid :: Memory Usage Works When Open Running Services Tab?

Nov 14, 2010

how the memory works on my orginial motorola droid (2.2). When I open the running services tab I see this on the bottom:

Other: 54MB in 3 Avail:19MB+45MB in 7

I'm wondering if someone can explain what this means. I assume this is all coming out of the 256MB of Ram the droid has? I was also installing app's and got a memory low warning aftering firefox beta that was 14MB in size. I gather that almost all the apps do not support installing to the SD card yet if ever. So of like the 100 apps I have installed is it likley that they are all taking up room of the RAM of the 256MB? I'm also wondering if there is a good app that shows you how much of your RAM is full with apps, so you know when you need to uninstall some etc. Like you are using 200MB out of 256MB or whatever.
