Motorola Droid :: Memory Usage Works When Open Running Services Tab?

Nov 14, 2010

how the memory works on my orginial motorola droid (2.2). When I open the running services tab I see this on the bottom:

Other: 54MB in 3 Avail:19MB+45MB in 7

I'm wondering if someone can explain what this means. I assume this is all coming out of the 256MB of Ram the droid has? I was also installing app's and got a memory low warning aftering firefox beta that was 14MB in size. I gather that almost all the apps do not support installing to the SD card yet if ever. So of like the 100 apps I have installed is it likley that they are all taking up room of the RAM of the 256MB? I'm also wondering if there is a good app that shows you how much of your RAM is full with apps, so you know when you need to uninstall some etc. Like you are using 200MB out of 256MB or whatever.

Motorola Droid :: Phone Randomly Start Silencing Itself / Stop It?

Mar 29, 2010

So my Droid has decided to randomly start silencing itself. I can't figure out why and when I called VZW they had me do a hard reset...this did not solve the problem. I have apps Audio Manager and Screen Lock...I'm not sure if either of those could be a problem. I also use beautiful widget toggles. I have looked at the settings and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I used Google Maps last night, but closed it before I went to bed. This morning my battery was really low and the GPS icon was still sitting there. My wife noticed a similar occurrence of GPS running more than expected on her Droid X as well.

Android :: Do Services *really* Run In Background / Technique For Start It?

Apr 9, 2010

I have a scenario where I start a Service from a splash screen. If I intentionally cause problems in that Service (such as an invalid port for the Socket connection) my UI Thread locks up. I have put a Timer in the Service, and have it perform logging at every tick. The Timer works from within the Service without flaw. So from that, I think I have determined that only the UI Thread is suffering.

If I start a Service from an Activity and that Service has an issue (i.e. server connection problems), should that result in a lockup in the UI thread from which it was launched?

Is there a technique for starting a Service and having it truly run in the background?

Android :: Stop Other Services In API 8 (Froyo 2.2)

Jun 12, 2010

I know of the wonderful change from 2.1 to 2.2 that ActivityManager.restartPackage now doesn't do the dirty stuff anymore since it now calls killBackgroundProcesses. Nice on one side, but bad on the other side. Because of that Services are not killed anymore.See as well: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa.I am the developer of SleepTimer in the Android market and used restartPackage to stop Music Players to play music. I therefore killed the services. That worked well. But now with killBackgroundProcesses it doesn't work anymore. I added the new Permission to my manifest, but still the music remains running. Yes i know that google kind of wants that. But it breaks the possibility to stop the different music players from my app. Now my question: Is there another way to kill/stop other services (music player services) in API 8?

Android :: Stop Services And Alarms When Application Ends

Aug 3, 2010

I have an application that consist of several Activities. When the application starts, some alarms are scheduled using AlarmManager and some services are started:
AlarmManager am = (AlarmManager) context.getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
a.setInexactRepeating(...)....

I would like to know any way to guarantee every service is stopped and every alarm is unscheduled when the user exits the application. The problem is that the user can leave the application from different Activities, and I don't like the idea of overriding the onDestroy method in every Activity. Is there any known Intent I can receive when the application ends? I've also found that an Android application can have a class that extends from Application, with a onTerminate method:

public class MyApplication extends Application {
@Override public void onTerminate() {
... } }

But the documentation is very clear: "never depend on this method being called; in many cases an unneeded application process will simply be killed by the kernel without executing any application code".
