Motorola Droid X :: App That Displays When Is Accessing 3G/WIFI Etc - Battery Issue
Jul 23, 2010
Is there an app I can install that will tell me what/when is accessing the 3G/WIFI etc. I'm thinking something is running in the background that I don't want or need. Yes, WIFI/GPS/BT is off. Sync is set to "on demand".
My battery life is not so hot. I even have a new battery that Verizon swapped for me.
This morning I unplugged from a 6 hour charging session. Meter showed 100%. I checked my email and looked at some system settings on the phone. Thats about it.
Now my battery reads 87% This after one hour of unplugging?

Was wondering what drains the battery more? 3G or Wifi? If I switch on wifi does it drain more battery then being on 3G?

Just to clarify, is there in fact battery pull and drain from BT, Wifi and GPS even if you are not actually using them as there no app running needing them and no icon showing them active in the menu bar?
I am curious if they are sending out polling or searching signals and thus, still draw the battery down? It seem they must, agreed?
Is it a substantial pull? I kind of want to leave them all on, but have started the habit of having them off and just using a widget to turn each on - 1 by 1 - as needed.. but that is kind of a PITA and I wonder if it is not even necessary?

My first DX was a major lemon, and of course I've been following the troubleshooting posts on the forums and getting more worried by the minute. None of my calls went through with the first phone; it kept reverting to previous screen, and losing signal to a circle/slash. Please send good vibes towards Philadelphia that this phone is actually a workable one. Also, if anyone could chime in -- I've been a little burned and now want to make sure my battery life, 3G and wifi connections, updates etc. are ducks in a row. What are the very first things I should do? I won't overdo the apps at first, just take it easy.

I just picked up the Droid X yesterday and so far love the phone. I had the Incredible a few months ago but had to return it due to some camera hardware issues. Anyways, my phone came with Android 2.1. I upgraded to 2.2 after charging my phone. Now:
1) Whenever I turn off WiFi, within 1 hr my phone will keep telling me it detects WiFi networks, I'll go back in control panel and sure enough WiFi has some how turned itself back on.
2)My battery usage icon, when I click on the battery to get a breakdown of what's using power it 'force closes' every time.

I think I figured out why sometimes my Droid stays on for 1.5 days and sometimes after 6 hour of just being idle the battery is drained.
When wifi is turned on an connected to a network, the cellular signal is way low and it just drains the battery.

I've been trying some battery widgets, and I like a lot that HTC battery widget, with the battery icon and the "battery" written down. It's a pity that this one's only for 480x320 displays. Is there a version of it for 800x480 displays?

This started today. When I call my wife, or receive one from her for that matter. The name displayed is her google chat name, not her name. Under her contact there are 3 numbers listed. Work, Home and Cell. If I call her work, it displays her actual name, but the other two display her google chat name. Don't know what happened.

I just got a Hero, its really cool, but I'm worried about how much data this thing is going to eat up. I've got a 500MB limit, but I dont really know how long that will last. So heres a few questions
How do I know if the phone is accessing the internet through WiFi or not? Obviously WiFi doesnt count towards the limit, so I want to know that I'm using it as often as possible.
Do widgets on the home page count towards your data limit? I've got a weather widget, facebook, bbc news, email, all getting their info from the internet. Is this going to be raking up the MBs while the phone is just sat in my pocket?
Is there a number I can ring to see how much data I've used? I'm with Orange. A number to call to check my texts and minutes would be helpful, too.

I have done a few different searches though I cannot find any tips. How do you access the download screen on the phone. You know, the black screen that shows what you have downloaded or are currently downloading? I have Installed Astro which works great but I cannot seem to find a way to access this screen on my phone.

I can't find a way to access the internal 8GB storage from the phone to put files there, or to open/use files there, for that matter.I can see it from the PC if I mount the Droid, but can't from the phone itself.please point out the obvious thing that I'm missing. I've tried Astro, Root Explorer, and the Files program that came w/the D2, none of them appear to allow me to access the 8gb storage.

Whenever I try to log into my youtube account on my Droid, it freezes up. I will open the Youtube app, press menu and click My account. Then it has 2 choices: 1) My email address, 2) Add account. When I click on my email it freezes up and eventually the Droid gives me the option to "Force close" it, as it is not responding. I also tried "Add account" and typed in my email address (which had already shown up as the first choice) and password, and it said "authenticating" and then froze up too.

I'm using the latest Wifi Fix and OverClock kernel for 2.2 Froyo, but I'm still having issues randomly disconnecting from the wireless network... The wifi signal shows 0/3 bars even when sitting right in front of the router.
Froyo Overclocked Kernels includes *wifi* fix is where I got my kernel. I've been overclocking to 1200 GHz.
This is where I got my ROM (it was updated today) Download: Newer Motorola Droid Froyo Leak FRF57 | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog
Even under the wireless network now, it says "Disabled, secured with 802.1x EAP"

I want to be able to show the Battery Info activity in my app, which shows things such as the exact level, battery health, etc.I'm not sure how I can get it, though a few applications such as Power Manager, Any Cut, etc. show this screen as well. I found in the source code of Settings this intent in a file called testing_settings.xml,But I don't know how to use it. I would guess from the fact that Any Cut has a list of activities, that a list of said activities exists somewhere, and therefore an easy way to access them exists, but I haven't found it.

Rooted Droid 1, running LFY 1.9 with it's 1ghz kernel, SPRecovery. Had a weird issue recently; the phone displayed that my battery life was at 40%, then probably ~30 minutes later it was down to 20%. I wasn't using it during that time, I just unlocked the screen to check something. Anyway, I opened my browser and within a minute or two I got the "15% battery life remaining" message, prompting me to connect my charger. I decided I would allow the phone to just die and shut itself down. So I waited ~45 minutes and it went down to 10%, then almost immediately to 5%. I turned on the GPS just to make it drain faster... I watched a one-hour television show and when it was over, I glanced over to the phone to see if it had died - nope, still on. I turned the LED light on, leaving the GPS running for ~25 minutes and it finally powered down. Then I plugged it in to charge and left the room. Came back in about 2.5 hours later and picked up the phone - it was very hot. Unlocked the screen and checked SetCPU and it was running ~135?F but it immediately started cooling down. It was fully charged, however so I unplugged it. I went to bed shortly thereafter and the battery life displayed 90% as I set the alarm to wake me up the next morning. I happened to wake up shortly before the alarm was set to go off and I picked up the phone to disable the alarm and noticed the red 'charge me' light blinking - unlocked the screen to see 5% and just then it powered itself down.
TL;DR -- Phone only got hot that one time, phone hasn't gone dead in stand-by mode again like it did that night. Battery drains at a seemingly normal rate based on my regular use from 100% down to 40%, then it rapidly drains after that, always skipping 30% and when it gets down to 5% it stays alive for quite a long time under heavy load. Is there a way to 'teach' the phone how to check and calculate actual and remaining battery % and to display it correctly? Is it kernel-related? I heard somewhere about doing a 'battery wipe' but I am unsure what that entails and searches are proving fruitless for me so far.

Background info:
- I'm running the "Battery Left" widget and I have it displaying "estimated percentage left", "system percentage", and "estimated time left until dead".
- I listen to A LOT of Slacker Radio.
My issues:
- I was previously getting about 19+ hours out of a fully charged battery. 2-3 days ago I started having issues with the widget (I think it may have started when I installed an update to the widget) so I recalibrated it to no avail. Then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Within a few hours it claimed that it was getting accurate readings (when I first installed the widget weeks ago, it took days to get accurate) and now says that I should be getting 9 hours out of a fully charged battery. I know that can't be right so I'll see how the widget adjusts itself over the next few days, but, any thoughts? (I know a lot of you guys use the same widget and know how it works...)
- Also, In the first two hours of my phone being unplugged this morning, it went from 100% to 70%. I did run Slacker for about an hour and a half of that time, but could it really drain the battery that much that quickly? And I noticed that when I close Slacker, if I go into phone settings, applications, running services - there's still a Slacker update thing running in there. Could that be draining the battery too, even if it's only checking for updates?
- I really don't run a lot of stuff on this phone. I keep wifi and gps turned off. I use bluetooth only a few hours each night. Minimal web browsing. Although, my POP email gets checked every 5 mins (but I just changed it to every 10) and I do use gchat and text a decent amount, but I'd say overall, it's "light" use (except for Slacker which could be a huge drain, right?)
