Motorola Droid :: Laptop And Droid Don't Connect
Apr 2, 2010
I have the Motorola droid (rooted) and recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 7. I've mounted my droid to my laptop in the past - I always had to search and find out how to mount it. Anyways yesterday I wanted to mount it to pull some files off my laptop and transfer to a friends laptop - using my Droid like a USB drive. When I plugged my Droid into my laptop with the USB cable, my laptop dinged but nothing else. The little light on the side of the Droid telling you it's at least charging didn't light up, the USB options didn't come up in the pull down screen on my phone... It hasn't done anything. I've tried all three USB ports on my laptop, the same USB cable works in the AC charger, I've re-started my phone and laptop many times with no changes.

This is weird. My wife and I both have droid x's purchased same day. I connected my wifes X to my laptop, the laptap goes through the install process and tells me that I'm missing a driver. I also notice that the X is charging. I disconnected it and connected my X and nothing. No charge no attempt to install. I have the debugg checked on both X's. Why will it atleast charge on one X and not the other? What do I need to do to my X. I also touched the usb icon on my X and tried each option and nothing either.

Anyone know of a way to get a laptop or netbook to access and use the Droid's GPS (via tethering)? Basically using the phone as a GPS receiver.

Want to try the new smoked glass and other ROMs, but I left my trusty Toshiba at home when I left last week. I'm sure I can use astro to put the file on my sd, just not sure if this is a good idea.

This could be a long post so here's the gist of it: my new laptop running Windows 7 doesn't want to mount my Droid when my external harddrive is connected. I tried a couple different tests using my Droid, my external harddrive, and a thumbdrive to try to isolate one of the devices as being screwy, but... When I mount the droid FIRST and then connect my external harddrive, the computer will automatically unmount the droid when the external harddrive is connected. If I connect the external harddrive first and THEN try to mount the droid, the droid just won't mount.
When I mount the droid FIRST and then connect my thumbdrive, everything works fine. If I connect the thumbdrive first and THEN try to mount the droid, everything works fine then too. When I connect the external harddrive and the thumbdrive to the laptop at the same time, I get no problems here either. (NOTE: All of this mounting is done via USB but I get this problem when I try to mount via bluetooth too... The computer will pair and connect with the droid via bluetooth, but when I try to use Windows Explorer to browse the files on the droid, it pops up on the laptop with "service not available".) It seems that my external harddrive seems to have something personal against my Droid...But I never had this problem on my old laptop (which ran Windows Vista).

Is there a way to stop the Droid X from charging when it's connected via USB? Here's the situation. I take a train to commute to work, it's about a 90 minute ride, and there's no AC power. I like to use my laptop during the commute to get some work done, and with my new droid I bought an app that tethers the internet connection, but only over USB.
Problem is, when it's connected over USB, the laptop battery charges the phone, and the laptop dies after about 45-60 minutes. Without the phone connected, I can use it for my whole commute. So I really need to be able to disable the charging while still maintaining the data connection from the phone to the laptop.

I've seen threads on remote desktop but I want to be able to stream music from my laptop at home to my droid on the go. However, I want to be able to play all my music through winamp (because of it's preset EQ).
Is there a way I can remote desktop into my laptop through my droid so I can see the actual windows background of my home laptop (I have W7 Ultimate) and stream music to the phone by playing it through winamp?
I want to be able to listen to flac (which is the something droid can't do) which is one of the reasons I want to go through all this.

When I took a picture it would email it to me as well as save it to the phone. Is there an App or a way to have each picture I take automatically emailed to my laptop email address? This way I wouldn't have to manually transfer the pics from the phone to the laptop.

I bluetooth'd my Hero to my laptop and here's more info on it.
1. The speakers on the laptop serve as a wireless speaker system when you make or receive a call.
2. The speakers also play music from your Hero.
3. Transfer files to and from the Hero
4. Send a fax
5. Tether!
6. PIM sync (hello WinMo users!)
7. Wireless printing
I've performed all of these functions without a hitch. So the Hero looks as if it's a better phone than anticipated... at least for me anyway.

I got the Droid about a month ago and love it. I do have a problem though: My house is in the same town as a non-verizon CDMA tower (US Cellular) and very far away from the nearest Verizon tower. With my other Verizon phones (older handsets), they just connect to the close tower and have full signal all the time without any issues. My Droid, on the other hand, will always try to stay connected to the distant Verizon tower - it can be very difficult and frustrating to make calls with the Droid because there is often no signal and the phone is unable to place a call. I don't need the 3G at home, as the Droid can use my wireless for browsing, etc. How can I get the Droid to stop trying to connect to the distant Verizon tower and connect to the nearby partner tower instead (so that I have high-quality phone signal at home)? I have called Verizon and Motorola and nothing seems to help.
