Motorola Droid 2 :: Keyboard And Front Button Backlighting Not Lighting Up
Sep 1, 2010
i was messing around with ADW Launcher and when i put my phone down i flipped it over and noticed the phone had froze. Didn't think a whole lot about coming from an Eris it was nothing i wasn't used to.Well when i pulled the battery and went on the market place, i noticed the Keyboard wasn't lighting up.Then i noticed even the front facing buttons were lighting up, now mind you i'm sitting in a rather dark room with my laptop watching a movie so it def should have lit up.I've reset the phone a few times now and still no backlighting and i don't know what settings they are under.

After successfully rooting my phone, after my reboot i noticed that the bottom row of touch sensitive keys and the physical keyboard do not light up when touch or slid open. to fix this i have to go to the brightness setting and uncheck and check automatic brightness again?
is this common? did i make an oopsie?

So occasionally I set my phone down with the keyboard still open. For some reason periodically the keyboard will flash quickly. It's not because I'm going in and out of service, as the phone is not moving, just sitting on my desk. No alerts or notifications are sounding, no noise at all, just the lights. Any idea why it does this?

Anyone else notice that the space key on the hard-keyboard is indented, or is this something wrong with mine? I like the keyboard in general, but the space is really annoying. The other keys are all essentially flat, or very slightly curved upwards. The space though is really pretty depressed inwards. I don't think it's worn out, as I really haven't used it much yet.

So I have the Droid X but I noticed that the Droid 2 now has a themed version of Swype to fit in with the rest of the UI. I like it a lot.
My question is this. When you push the voice-to-text button does it pop up a window like earlier versions of Swype or does it do the really fast and slick thing that the multi touch keyboard does (just replace the keyboard with the audio waveform thing).

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

"I would like to detect if the navigation keys of the front of the phone (Home,Menu,Back,Search) are hard-keys (ex. G1) or soft-keys (ex. Nexus One).
This api http://d.android.com/reference/android/content/res/Configuration.html... gets close but is related to the keyboard and not the front facing keys.
KeyEvent [url]has a FLAG_VIRTUAL_HARD_KEY flag, I can only detect that after the key is pressed. I'd like to find out what type of buttons the user has without asking the user to press a key first.
I would have expected such an api to be under [url] but android.hardware has very little info about the actual hardware of the device."

Is the center "button", just a button (similar to the Omnia II devices) or is it a digital trackpad (like the Omnia I) models?

So has anybody done this yet, I could imagine 2 small mirrors attached on to the back of the camera would do the trick to angle the lens to face the front. It would have to be clipon to work over our cases. Any pics of this actually being done, if not lets get some pictures of future attempts at this. That would be finding fantastic.

How are the physical buttons on the front. I think they look a little cheap and cheesy? Maybe I'm wrong. Are the solid? Feel strong?

Does anybody knows how to add "1" in front of a number? I'm in Canada right now and they don't let me call directly "303-333-3333" for example. I can't add the 1 in front of it by editing a number that called me. All my entries don't have a "1" and most of them are long distance.

So the picture im posting is from droid-life and was one of the first leaked shots of the droid x. So I just wondering if anyone else is as pissed as me at the fact that they delayed this phone just so they could remove the front facing camera and place it on the droid pro when that comes out later this year.

I tend to use the phone in dark places often. I dim the screen but the little ball and the other menu buttons stay bright. Is there any way to dim them or just turn them off?

From all the pre release stuff I saw it looked like the Droid X was going to include a front facing camera. At the announcement today the pictures of the X looked like there was no camera and I haven't seen it mentioned. Is there not going to be a front camera on this phone. Doesn't matter to me, but I'm trying to talk my wife into getting one of these and she really wants a front camera for video calls.

I got home from a trip today, where my phone had been sitting at a low charge for a bit. I managed to get it a high enough charge to hold out, but it died by the time I was in my house and hooked it up to the charged. The Amber LED is not lighting up like it is charging, which has me worried. I have switched between different USB cables, and also from the wall to a USB. Is it normal for the LED to not light up if the battery is absolutely drained? Also, any USB mini cable should work, correct?

So the "minimize keyboard" button in the lower left of the landscape qwerty keyboard works maybe every 5th time. I only started noticing this after the 2.1 OTA. However my wife has the 2.1 on her Eris as well and hers works perfectly. If I make sure to push the very top edge of the button, it works fine, but just pressing it normally in the middle rarely works. Perhaps there is something wrong with that corner if the screen.

It is difficult to test a game with the mouse pointer on android buttons. I would like to control those buttons with the hardware keyboard. Actually I don't want to control the buttons itself but I want to control the behavior the buttons would also do. For example I have 4 buttons in the android application with "arrow up, down, left, right". I'd like to use the arrow buttons of my hardware keyboard to control the same. How can I do that? Actually the question is, where can I set the Listener? I tried something in my activity.

Instead of sliding across to unlock the phone. You can use one finger to hold the green icon, then you'll notice a little green icon on the other side of the screen (where the sound off icon usually is, it disappears when you hold the unlock icon). Then just tap that one too and it unlocks.

Dont get me wrong, the QWERTY keyboard is sick, and I love it. But after typing on the keyboard for while, I wanted to switch it up, so I tried the on screen key pad. And to my surprise, the on screen keyboard appears to be much quicker than using the QWERTY!
