Android :: Blocking Intents From Launching?

Apr 6, 2010

On the market, there's an application called App Protector, which seems to effectively block the launching of configured activities until a password is correctly provided. By default, it blocks access to itself (not very interesting), Settings, and a few others. I wrote my own app to launch settings (rather than doing so through the home screen) and App Protector continued to do the job it claims to do.
When an activity that is protected is started, App Protector's password input activity is shown instead. Once the correct password is provided, the activity that was started comes to the front.
First -- does anyone know how this app is able to get between the rest of the system and the activities it protects? I would like to do something along these lines in my own application as well. Perhaps this app is receiving a broadcast about other activities coming to the foreground, and when the foreground activity is protected, it forces itself to the foreground?
Second -- does anyone know how well this technique will stand up to attack? Are there other ways to circumvent, where start Activity(...) fails to? It seems that one could use adb to un install it, thus removing its protection easily, but if I pursue my plans here, the app will be a part of a device's firmware (which, I assume, offers some protection against its apps being installed?)

Android :: Launching Activity Through Intents

Aug 9, 2010

I am implementing a simple app. I need to start an activity based on the state of the Activity. Lets take i am using a button to start the activity.
1. If the activity is not started, I need to start XYZ activity.
2. If the XYZ activity is on focus, then i need to close the activity on the button press.
3. If the XYZ activity is not in focus (like onPause) state then, I need to change the button state. Can you please help me in the flags that i need to use for starting the intent. Is it possible to get the state of activity before I start that activity?

Android :: Documentation On Launching / Controlling Google Navigation App Via Intents?

Dec 11, 2009

I realize this might not be the proper place to post this since it's not Android specific, but rather its about integrating with a google app.

I've been trying to find some documentation on launching / controlling the Google Navigation app via Intents or otherwise. I was hoping to find an intent to launch the navigation app with address parameters setup and start navigation immediately.

Can't find anything out there, so I'm still not even sure if it can be done.

Android :: Change Behavior Of Layout Display When Launching Intents?

Dec 21, 2009

I have an app where pressing button on the screen launches an intent with a new screen and buttons. Everything is working very well, but I'm got one small visual problem. When I press the button on screen on my phone, the new page slides in from the right, pushing the old page off screen left. This happens very quickly, but the overall effect is a bit jarring. Is there a way to stop pages from display this way? If possible, I'd like the page to just appear over the old page, without any scrolling.

Is this possible in Android?

Android :: ANDROID Intents Problem Launching Application

Jul 5, 2010

My problem is thus; I am new to programming on the ANDROID platform and have a 'working' application that piggy-backs on the API-Docs example. I wish it to launch three tabs one containing a list of reports, one a form to file a report and the last to show the geo-located reports. It doesn't appear as a separate application, it instead appears as a list to be launched by the API-Docs example.

Below is my manifest code...

Android :: UI Blocking On Intent Service?

Sep 14, 2010

I'm launching an IntentService using startActivity from inside the onClickListener of a button. startActivity returns immediately. No blocking there. But the button stays "pressed" until the IntentService finishes its work. In addition, the screen does not respond to rotation while the IntentService thread is running. I can see that it's a separate thread in the debugger but the UI seems to be coupled to it. As soon as the IntentService thread finishes, the UI is unblocked. Any idea how I can prevent this and let the UI continue?

Android :: OnClick Seems To Be Blocking OnFling

Nov 23, 2010

I have an Activity that implements a Gesture Detector to catch the user fling input for navigation to other screens. That was working fine - but - I recently updated a class that derives from my BaseActivity to add an onClick function and now that click event seems to block the onFling from being hit. The onClick is tied to a TextView area (in a LinearLayout) I have on my screen. The resultsClick method is wired to the TextView using its onClick property in the XML layout.

I've tried changing the return values in onSingleTapUp and onDown without luck. I've also tried adding log statements to all the functions below as well. None of them fire when I fling in the TextView area but they do on other areas of the screen.

Maybe I am using the wrong search terms, but I couldn't seem to find an example that addressed this - yet I'm sure this problem has been solved before.

Android :: Need A Call-Blocking Application For Motorola?

Mar 18, 2010

I have someone who's calls I wish to block. No I don't want to forward him to voice mail (even though I already have). I want the phone's caller ID to recognize the caller and simply bloc the call (I don't want the phone to ring and I don't want it to accept any voice mails from this guy). I know google voice has this feature, but I don't want to activate the single number version of GV (I'm not ready to have only one number. I read a similar thread that was posted here some time ago, but there were no definitive answers on it: I was wondering if anyone was aware of any apps that could be used to block a specific incoming number, which could be installed without having to root the phone.

Android :: Intercepting - Blocking All Hardware Buttons From Working

Oct 20, 2010

I'd love to prevent hardware buttons from working while user runs my app. Perfectly all of them, but any number would help :) I am not sure it's doable but maybe I miss something, hence my question. For those wondering - "why?" - we got an app that does full screen colorful animation and users often run it and hand the phone to their babies as they can stare at it for hours :) but the problem is, kids accidentally press hardware buttons (usually camera trigger, but also Home or Search - depending on the device model). I'd love to add the option to block all keys beside one which can hardly be pressed accidentally.

Android :: How Different Do Broadcast Intents Need To Be?

Oct 30, 2010

I have an IntentService that broadcasts an Intent each time if finishes some work. Each broadcast Intent is identical except that it contains a Bundle with some result information from the IntentService. Evidently, having different data in the Bundle is not enough for Android to think it's a different Intent. If the IntentService broadcasts two of these Intents back-to-back, the second one is dropped as a duplicate.

I know I've read about this behavior in this forum in the past but I can't find in the documentation where this duplicate elimination logic is described in detail. Mostly, I just want to differentiate the Intents enough that they are not considered duplicates. Any pointers would be appreciated.

The problem is I cant figure out a clean way to pass that selection to each of the tabs. At the moment I can pass an intent to the 'tabhost' activity and then pass to each child activity explicitly, however this just seems like messy iterative code to me! So basically how can I pass my intent data bundles to the tabs activities cleanly & efficiently! Psuedo code is also very welcome.

Android :: Intents Alarmmanager

Aug 7, 2010

I am trying to create intents that will be set using alarmmanager. Currently, I can do this with one intent, add extra data to it (strings, but i send them as one string with a seperator), and everything works fine and goes off at the correct time. However, when I try to send multiple intents like this, they are overwritten and only one goes off at the correct time. How can i structure my intents so that they appear different to the alarmmanager (i think they are getting deleted when filterIntent() is run).

long story short- putExtra() makes all the intents look the same still... how can i make them look different so they wont get deleted (and keep track of them in case i want to delete a specific one)
