HTC Incredible :: School Me On VoIP
Jun 24, 2010
new to smartphones and taking a cruise in a couple months. A guy at work is trying to explain things to me as we run into each other. He says that if i setup a Google Voice # (I have) and get sipgate (I have) and download Fring (I have) i can pair google voice with sipgate, and call my google voice # through Fring (with Sip) over Wifi while on the cruise to make free calls. Is this true? I really havent done anything with Sipgate except set it up in Fring. If so, what do i do in Sipgate to pair with Google Voice? Then how do i use it? Is there another way? Or am i (or was he) way off base?He travels internationally and said he has been doing a lot of research lately.

I was curious if anyone knew if the internet connection on the Incredible (tethered through PDAnet to my laptop) has enough bandwidth/speed to support using my VOIP line.Sometimes my cable internet goes out and this would be a nice short term alternative.

I'm new to Android (coming from E90) and I had a few questions regarding backing up and restoring once you update. Will the update to 2.2 be just that - an update? Or will it be the equivalent of flashing the device meaning I will have to re-install all my apps, contacts, settings, etc... and if so, how does that work? I've noticed the market keeps a list of all the apps you've downloaded. Does it therefore allow you to "re-sync" all the apps you had installed?Basically just trying to gauge how much of a headache this update will be. Nokia had a backup utility for Symbian so that once you flashed your device, you just re-synced it and everything was back the way it was.

I am wondering if there is an app or a possible future one, that can connect to a school's network. Why it is more complicated (if you don't know), is that you have to connect to the wifi, then enter your student ID and password into the browser, then you can access the internet. (similar to some airports)I am able to connect with the browser, but apps that require internet won't work. Is there anyway to make an app that will keep you authenticated so that apps can use the wifi?

What about handheld devices (PDAs, Smartphones, etc)? For Windows Mobile devices, there is SecureW2 for Windows Mobile. For iPhone, see our iPhone Web page. Currently, we know of no method for connecting Palm, Blackberry, or Nokia devices that are not running Windows Mobile to the UIC-Wireless network.

And advice or suggestions? My blackberry I had before the Eris linked it up no problem.. Ive got to figure this out! "Another way to check your email account is with a POP or IMAP email client like Outlook, Eudora, or Apple's Mail. The table below contains the information you will need to set up your email client to access your university email account."

I feel so much better about my keyboard. I have been using the stock one, but it gives me fits with my man hands and correcting my texts has been a pain in the ass.I finally sat down and researched a lot of keyboards and tried out a bunch on my Stock 2.2 Evo.Anyway, the keyboards on the marketplace are crap. They promise tons of options, but work as well as the stock keyboard. Then I heard about the Droid X keyboard, and spent about 2 hours installing and playing with different versions before discovering that they didn't run on 2.2I finally found one here that worked perfectly. It is amazing.

My wife teaches high school. My daughter is a wonderful young lady. This week at school my daughter placed her brand new htc droid in my wifes desk drawer. Since it is a violation for students to have there cell phones in class. Some student entered my wifes desk and took my daughters htc droid. The school was no help, the police was no help. Can anyone tell me if we can track this phone using gps?

alright so I have heard that the epic uses 1 gb of NAND memory. I know this is faster then the regular cards. Here is my question.Does the epic have NAND memory? If it does I heard that we can't store apps to the external card until 2.2 comes out. So aren't we going to have very limited space for apps until then?

Was talking with the T-mobile tech support rep (after learning the Vibrant does not support UMA to use wifi calling at home) and she told me about the upcoming back to school sale where many phones are free, and even better, adding an extra line is FREE till 2012. Not an extra $5/mo., free. Quite a few decent phones are available, too. Very cool, thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I might even get a phone just to for a back-up.

But when we were leaving the worker said check back on thursday when the back to school sale is, she said it might be on sale. What do you think? I just got the Droid Eris yesterday and I was setting up my gmail accounts. I noticed that the only way to view my school gmail account was through the gmail app, however I can view my personal gmail account with the mail app on my home screen. I have tried to select my ASU gmail account for that app but it doesn't give me an option to show it. Is there any way to add that account to the mail viewer?

Yes, I have looked around the forum for the answer to this question but no one has the same issue as me (as far as I know)Okay, when I try to set up my school email on my Hero, I get an authentication failure and it says something like " Authentication failed. Please verify your username and password."I have tried using the settings that google has on the website and the school doesn't have anything about setting up an email on a phone ( any phone).I tried changing the server to imap.grcc.edu and I had to confirm the certificate but then it gave the error again. I also tried taking the @email.grcc.edu from the username and that didn't work either. I am really frustrated right now. And no, I do not want to forward it to my other email. I like to keep my school and personal emails separate. Sorry if I sound a bit mean but I know that's what some of you will ask me.

My school has an open wifi network. When you first use a device on the network, it presents an authentication page so that you can get full access. I authenticated, and my Vibrant connects fine and is assigned an IP. I checked with the network admin, and my MAC address is registered correctly in their system.
But I can't get any data. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect I can load one or two pages, but then data stops.
Other Android users (Nexus One, Droid X) don't seem to have this problem. I'm trying to get the network pro to come and help me out with this, but it seems to be a problem with my phone. Yet my wifi connection at home works fine.

I want an electronic version of this: '10/'11 At-A-Glance Academic Monthly Planner, 6-7/8" x 8-3/4" | Staples
I just want to be able to write down school assignments quickly for each day as the day goes on. I don't want to associate them with certain events or times or anything, but I think I want more than just a notepad.

I know Android uses two email clients but I assume the Gmail client has the best integration and functionality (please correct me if I'm wrong). My school uses an email system that's based off of Gmail with my address being example@fiu.edu. The calendar is also the same. Here's a link of what the log-in looks like:
https://www.google.com/a/fiu.edu/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&co ntinue=https://mail.google.com/a/fiu.edu/&bsv=zpwhtygjntrz&ss=1<mpl=default<mplcache=2& hl=en
Would this work seamlessly with the stock Android Gmail client?

On my Droid X, I was able to add my CSUF (@csu.fullerton.edu) email by the following process: 1. Add existing Google account, 2. Menu button -> Browser sign-in, 3. Enter my email address and then select a Google Apps link near the bottom of the page, 4. sign in with my school info, 5. ta-dah! The problem I'm having is that I don't see a similar Google Apps link in the Jelly Bean version from step 3. I've tried a variety of combinations of signing in, without it, but I end up with failure every time. I was just receiving school emails today, on my previous phone, so I'm pretty darn sure it's just an issue with the new setup system.
I'm aware that I can set it all up through the other Email app, but I really prefer having it through Gmail.
I have now successfully added my CSUF email as an existing Google account, by following these steps...
1. Add Existing Google account
2. Don't enter any info, as one normally would to register a gmail account, and instead press the Menu button and select Browser sign-in.
3. On the following screen, enter the email only and press sign in.
4. For me, here it took me to the CSUF sign-in page and I did so.
5. I actually browsed the site a bit, from there, which leads me to believe that if your sign-in is failing by all of these other steps, the missing factor may be spending enough time signed in through the browser.
6. I pushed the back button until I was greeted with the "Signing In" message.
I've done this before, and it only exited me back out to where I could enter my email and password for an existing account, so as mentioned, success might be due to spending enough time signed in for the connection to register.

We use a hosted PBX solution that is VOIP. There is no VOIP andoid app from our provider but there is one for the iPhone.
However, we can call through our PBX by dialing our direct dial number, passcode and dial out - end result is the same, we call clients from our PBX with our company number displayed on caller ID.
The manual process is accomplished as follows.
1 dial our personal direct dial number
2 pause pause
3 enter #
4 pause pause
5 enter our mailbox security code (4-8 numbers)
6 enter #
7 pause
8 enter *
9 pause
10 enter #
11 enter 91 (9 for outside line, 1 for US)
at this point we enter the 7 digit number and are connected
Can someone write an app or is one already written that will simply let us choose a contact to dial and have a popup as done in Google Voice
Call with Google Voice
Call without Google Voice
Call from PBX
I am thinking if you select call from pbx the app would simply dial steps 1-11 above and then enter the contact number to complete the call.
This has to be incredibly easy for guys... it would sure help us outside sales guys from dialing in through our corporate pbx's.
