HTC Incredible :: Mms Compression Fix
Oct 28, 2010
First i want to say im running the Redemptive rEVOlution rom and i dont know if this will work on roms with the incredible framework, i think it might.I installed a zip from Calkulin over on the xda evo forum for a compression fix for mms. If the pic is not over the size limit, it wont be compressed anymore. I have just sent about ten pics in a row ranging from 550kb up to 1.1mb and they all went through without compressing! I take no credit for the mod. All credit goes to calkulin over at xda.I found it very annoying that every pic would get compressed. Glad to find a fix for that. BIG. THANKS TO CALKULIN FOR THIS.Now when it does compress a message thats over the size limit, its still" over" compressing it. My limit is 1.2m and if the file is 1.3, it compress' to 44kb...What the hell? Just have to find out how to fix the over compression issue and im happier then a pig in shit.

When I try to send a photo by MMS the phone compresses the image to 8kb when it can send up to 300kb, obviously the image quality is rubbish then.

Does anyone know how to reduce the photo compression the evo applies when sending a picturemail/mms?I use it rarely, but I had to send a photo someone and my evo auto-compressed it to like 18kb - which is a bit excessive since it destroyed the relevant details in the photo. I ended up just emailing the thing but was wondering if there was something I missed here.

After doing a search around, found nothing on this issue. Love my phone! Its great. The problem I have is possibly a little ahead of its time, but here goes. The resolution of the OLED screen is so good, that whereas historically on smartphones, the automatic image 'de-resolution' by my GSM 3G carrier (in this case T-Mobile) in their efforts to speed up the downloads would not be so noticeable on the phone screen, I can't help but see the opposite is true now.For example, on the BBC News website, as you zoom in to look at an image, you cannot see the detail as T-Mobile is compressing the image too far. But I know the Nexus 1 can handle much better that what is being sent through. The question is simply, is there a work around (historically, through dongles and through a PC, no problem) to allow me to either selectively get the full resolution image, or alternatively, is there a browser that allows me to select images individually for full download so I get the full detail that I want?

I tried to configure compression method to use LZMA in make menuconfig to compile a custom kernel. When I compile it I get errors regarding to compile zImage which is probably due to missing drivers for LZMA compression. I'm using Fedora 20 64 bit and have java jdk 7. How do I add patches into my kernel source to have LZMA compression?
How to add LZMA compression in Ubuntu:

Apparently you can't have a file in "assets" larger than 1MB (except for certain file types) because it's considered too large to uncompress. But I'm finding mixed info about how to circumvent this limitation. Some say that you can put the files in "raw" and avoid the limitation but others say that files in "raw" are compressed too.And there's the -0 aapt option that can be used to turn off compression for certain file types, but there's no way to specify aapt options in Carbide. I realize that I can break the file into pieces, but that's error- prone on both ends. And using one of the known uncompressed file types not only confuses things but also runs the risk that the Android PTB will decide to start compressing that file type.

I want to download an image from the 'net and set it as the users background. This works great over wi-fi, and some 3G networks, but others (T-Mobile UK, for sure) seem to compress the images before sending them. This effect is noticeable when using the browser, too - however, if you long press on an image and save it, when viewing in the gallery it is either not compressed at all, or substantially less so. I want to be able to do this in my own app.I assume it has something to do with the HTTP headers, but of the ones I've modified, none has made a difference.

I've had the Nexus one for a couple of weeks now, last night I thought I'd have a closer look at some of the snaps I'd taken, check the quality like. I was MT pinch zooming into them and to be frank I was less than impressed with both the detail and the compression. To double check I quickly popped outside and snapped a piccy of a rather charming sunset we were having, ensuring I was on 5MP and super-fine.
Took a look in the Gallery app and same thing, looks about 2MP with some heavy duty compression when you zoom in.A little baffled by this I thought I'd check them out on my desktop monitor so emailed the same photo to myself. Much reduced Compression artifacts! The gallery images that you view are clearly some low quality version of the pic, natively I don't believe you can truly appreciate your pics on your handset.

Anyone know how to change how much messages compresses an image when u try to send it in a text? When I take a picture and share it in messages it says picture is too large and starts compressing it. It compresses it down to 14kb. It says picture can be as large as 1000kb but every time it compresses it to 14kb and don't know how to change it.

Has anyone noticed viewing photos on mediscape, it doesn't show much detail and sometimes bad compression. But when I view the same image using Justpictures app or other file manager, image look much better. Is this a bug in mediascape or just bad compression method used in mediascape? Will SE solved this issue out?

I am trying to save a bitmap in a JPEG format, and i can see that the image is always stored with a lower quality even if i give the compression level as 100, however for PNG it is working fine. Similarly during Media.insert() or getContentResolver().insert() the image is stored with a lesser quality, I can see in that the compression level is 50 in the Media.java, however I tried to create my own method for the same function with quality 100.

So from what I can tell Media.insert Image is locked to heavy compression on all images. This includes when passing in the path to a photo in the filesystem. As a test I used a 3000x2000 pixel jpg which had been previously saved at maximum quality and was ~6MB. After passing the path to Media.insert Image, the resultant copy (still 3000x2000) is 623KB. I passed in another copy of the 3000x2000 image, this one compressed down to 393KB. After Media.insert Image, the image filesize is 492KB. I'm wondering if there's a way to specify the compression when images are saved by insert Image. I'm also wondering why this is recompressing jpgs, rather than simply copying them into DCIM. A side-effect of opening and re-compressing these images is that it imposes a rather low VM cap on what insert Image can handle. I'm getting out-of-memory errors when trying to pass the path of a 10 megapixel image.

I've tried a bunch of my own images as my lock screen, all set at what I've been told is the correct resolution, but they always come out looking pixelated, dull and blurry. The images look extremely crisp and bright when i preview them in the lock-screen selection area - but when saved, there's a huge difference in quality. The resolution which fits perfectly is 320x455, but pretty much everyone online says its 320x480 which I know to be wrong because you can see it clearly doesn't fit the screen when you're selecting it - and so it gets resized up.I've tried JPG, PNG, TIF.I've tried different sample rates, different color pallettes - nothing works.Even using the default HTC one (which looked gorgeous originally) - whenever I apply it now, it looks like it went through some 60% JPG compression.artifacts all over the place.

I've started to notice that past a certain point, my phone doesn't clip like I'd expect it to, but sorta softly eases into a really terrible sort of compression that drives me nuts, particularly when I'm trying to run sound through my car stereo over A2DP. It seems that once you reach the last 3 or 4 ticks of the volume control, the music will start compressing heavily which really mucks with the audio quality and causes the music to lose punch in the midrange (as generally it seems tracks with high levels of bass are affected by this.) Has anyone else noticed this? I assumed at first it was an A2DP issue (possibly conditioning the sound for the A2DP stream?) but then heard it when hooked up hardwired as well.If you have noticed this, is it just a 'feature' of the phone, or are other music player apps not affected by the issue? Is there one you'd recommend? Obviously I'm not expecting audiophile quality sound but it is quite annoying when suddenly the middle drops out of a track in the midst of listening.

Does anyone know if there is an Icon of the Incredible? I would like to replace the old telephone receiver icon on the dock with an Icon of the Incredible. If not could someone make me one from a picture or explain how to reduce the pic to a sice for the Icon? Currently I downloaded the Windows 7 icon pack from the market and i'm using the default cell phone icon which looks like an old canybar Nokia.

This folder includes screen shots that are used for Internet Browser bookmarks. It also includes screen shots of web pages that I did not choose to bookmark. When I clear cache while in "Internet" in "Manage Applications" it does not remove these jpg files that are not being used for bookmarks. When I clear everything while in Internet app (in settings) it does not remove these jpg files either. It also does not remove them from within the HistoryEraser app. The only way I can remove the jpg files is with Astro or when connected to PC. I have to go through them and erase jpgs that I do not want there.
There were 72 jpg files in that directory and they go all the way back to when I got phone (on 4/29). I have only added 5 bookmarks myself during that time. They do not take up a lot of space but I just don't want them there.

I have my original gmail account "slaved" to my google apps account, so when I log in to user@gmail.com it displays my google apps user@domain.com as being logged in. For most things this is great, but now with the android phone there are some gotchya's First was the Market. I had to create yet another gmail account to buy anything off the market, because when I sign in to my 'gmail' account on my phone it signs me in as an apps user.
Second, is my google voice (attached to gmail) has its own set of contacts associated with my gmail account, and they are not synced with my google apps account. I was hoping the phone would sort of mesh them together, however I'm not seeing that. On my iPhone I was using soocial, however they recently stopped allowing unlimited contacts and their new free limit is below my number of contacts. Is there a way for the phone to keep these to contact lists "connected" and synced together?

I bought an Eris on the 28th, but returned it sunday within the 30 day grace period to wait for the incredible. And its killing me xD.I had to switch back to my winmo 6.1 HTC vx6900, and switching back from android is rough. Truly, it is a day to day struggle that we must cope with one step at a time. Tasks that used to be so simple, like editing a contact or sending a text, are now unwieldy by comparison.Who else here has had to do this? Am I alone in having to deal with this?

I had a rooted Incredible using this method before however I had a problem with the on screen keyboard so I got a replacement. The replacement just came yesterday. Now I am rooting the replacement and the Unrevoked 3 program gets stuck at "Waiting for root... (Safe to restart if this doesn't work)"
I have the HBOOT drivers installed and my phone comes up in device manager as "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Did they apply a new update to the phone that prevents rooting? If so how long before I can get around it?

I have been researching for some time now, but have yet to come up with an actual fix. I have my Incredible paired with my Altima and can make calls via Bluetooth with no problem. My question is, how can I wirelessly stream music or Pandora from my phone to my car (Altima does not have an aux jack). I know my car is capable because I was able to do this with my old Blackberry (exactly how I don't remember, it was an intricate process of pressing random buttons).
