Android :: How To Disable Asset Compression In Eclipse Builds?

Sep 12, 2010

Does anyone know how to disable asset compression in eclipse builds? In other words, how to cause the -0 flag to be set on aapt? This is in order to put in a >1MB asset file, which requires compression to be turned off.

Android :: Ant And Eclipse Builds Don't Play Nice

May 25, 2009

I use ant to do release builds, and eclipse to do all my debug builds. With the new 1.5 sdk, my build.xml overides the resource-src target in order to perform some additional tasks, and it then depends on android_rules.resource-src to get the proper toolchain behaviour. This works well for ant, but eclipse doesn't seem to know where android_rules comes from (not surprising since it is dynamically imported via code), and thus says there is an error in the file. This in turn stops the entire android project from building. So I need to either somehow get eclipse to parse the build.xml properly, or better still, get eclipse to ignore the build.xml altogether since build.xml takes no part in the eclipse build.

Android : Disable Java Formatting In Eclipse Editor?

Jul 17, 2010

Is there a (simple) way to completely and utterly disable all Java formatting in the Eclipse editor?

That is an Eclipse question, but I appreciate your indulgence because this problem is slowly driving me insane. I am spending a lot of time fixing code to make it look good again after it gets mangled by the automatic formatting. I thought I had removed all formatting keyboard shortcuts, but I missed something because my code keeps getting changed. I suspect the culprit to be the SourceFormat menu option because that can be triggered by Alt-S-F which is very close to Alt-F- S, the File/Save command.

So a little finger slip and code mangled. Unfortunately, the mangling is not always done where I am looking (since it is applied to the entire file), so I don't always know to undo it. Is it possible to disable or remove a menu item?

Disable Auto Rotation With Eclipse

Feb 22, 2012

it is possible to code an app so that it does not rotate if/when the user rotates their device. I have built an app that is designed for portrait view only. When it is flips to landscape, it gets distorted. I have apps on my android that do not rotate when I try to rotate my device.

I am using Eclipse to make my app. I'm hoping it is something that I need to add to the manifest.

Android :: Speed Up Builds On Large Projects - Renaming PNG

Sep 16, 2010

I ran into a problem of slow builds and thought I'd share the solution. I'm porting an iPhone app to Android, and as soon as I added the images to the project (400+ pngs), build time went from about 5 seconds to about 40 seconds. This is on a new machine, quad core i7, 8GB ram. The resource processor (aapt) was to blame. Every time I made a change to a layout xml file and hit save - bam, wait 40 seconds. After running aapt in verbose mode, it was obvious what was happening - aapt does png optimization every single time. Optimization is slow, and aapt only used one core. So it makes sense to turn this optimization off. Just run optipng once, no need to optimize every build or every time I save a layout xml file.

So how do you turn png optimization off? You can't. There is no Eclipse setting, no command line option for aapt. Digging around the aapt source, I noticed something funny though - it only optimizes images in the "drawable" folders that end in ".png". http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/frameworks/base.git;a=blob;...
Solution: rename all the pngs to end in uppercase ".PNG". Then aapt simply copies the files without optimizing. My build time is back to 5 seconds!
(Caveat: this won't work for nine-patch files - they still need to end in lowercase ".9.png".)

Android :: Getting An Asset Outside Of Main Activity

Nov 30, 2009

From digging around a bit, getAssets() is an inherited method from ContextWrapper. It returns an AssetManager, and using open() it can return an InputStream. What I'm attempting to do at this point, is use the GLSurfuceViewActivity, Cube and CubeRenderer to work and learn off of and read in vertex data from a binary file. I've already created the binary output by parsing a model obj file and added to the assets directory. My Shape class (modified from the Cube class) does not have access to calling getAssets() since it's not a subclass of Activity or ContextWrapper. Once I accepted that, I tried to think of the best way to read in the data (without storing it extra places) to the Shape class. What I did, and seems to be working okay, was modify the Shape and ShapeRenderer constructors to accept an AssetManger as a parameter.

Android :: Packaging Hidden Asset Files

Jun 9, 2010

I'm placing the file '.nomedia' into a folder in order to avoid Android's MediaScanner from detecting the media files in the folder. I need to copy this folder (including '.nomedia') from the APK's assets to the SD card (so other apps can make use of these media files, etc.). When I package the APK in Eclipse, it doesn't package the '.nomedia' file. Presumably it's detecting it as a hidden file. Any ideas how to fix this? Is there a secret aapt flag I can use? I'd like to avoid copying the folder and then manually creating a '.nomedia' folder, if possible.

Android :: Loading Entire Asset Folder

Jan 2, 2010

I have been trying to figure this out for some time now. Is there any way to load the entire Assets folder instead of having to code it for every single item? Also, once the images are read, is there a way to have another app (already installed on the device) grab that data? The intent is declared in the manifest and on it's own with the items in the res/ drawable it works fine but to have more then one option I'm using the assets folder with subdirectories. The user choses an option, that directory loads through another app already installed, if that makes sense.

Motorola Droid :: 2.2 Builds Facebook Sync

Jun 25, 2010

So I've tried 2 builds so far Koush's vanilla build and the Sapphire build and I've run into the same problem on both: whenever I login to Facebook, I no longer get the option to sync contacts. I'm curious as to whether this is a problem I'm having exclusively, or if it's something other people are running into too, and if anyone has found a way to make it work.Options to sync don't exist at all for me. When I go to settings in the Facebook app it normally would show a menu option for syncing, but on 2.2 I get no option. And when I go to the Accounts menu selection in system settings, I can select Facebook as an account to add but I get bounced back to the accounts list without being able to actually add an account.

Android :: Avoiding Compression On Large Files

Sep 29, 2010

Apparently you can't have a file in "assets" larger than 1MB (except for certain file types) because it's considered too large to uncompress. But I'm finding mixed info about how to circumvent this limitation. Some say that you can put the files in "raw" and avoid the limitation but others say that files in "raw" are compressed too.And there's the -0 aapt option that can be used to turn off compression for certain file types, but there's no way to specify aapt options in Carbide. I realize that I can break the file into pieces, but that's error- prone on both ends. And using one of the known uncompressed file types not only confuses things but also runs the risk that the Android PTB will decide to start compressing that file type.

Android :: Avoiding Image Compression On Some 3G Networks

Jul 3, 2010

I want to download an image from the 'net and set it as the users background. This works great over wi-fi, and some 3G networks, but others (T-Mobile UK, for sure) seem to compress the images before sending them. This effect is noticeable when using the browser, too - however, if you long press on an image and save it, when viewing in the gallery it is either not compressed at all, or substantially less so. I want to be able to do this in my own app.I assume it has something to do with the HTTP headers, but of the ones I've modified, none has made a difference.
