HTC Incredible :: Wireless Tether Not Allowing Other Device To Connect?
Jul 20, 2010
I got my DINC rooted last night and got wireless tether working on my computer and my iTouch, so today I went to my sisters house she has a stock DINC, I turned on my wireless tether, turned on her WiFi, it does not find anything but her home WiFi. I tried to manually input my SSID and still nothing.

I downloaded wireless tether, the newest version and the two previous versions. I install the apk using the fascinates file manager. The program appears to run fine on the phone, and says 0.4kb download and .1kb upload. I've used two different laptops, one with windows 7, and one with XP to try to connect to the phone. I can find Android Tether as an available network for both computers. However, when I click to connect, both computers cannot connect. When I perform a diagnostic test, windows reports there is a problem with the access point, but cannot fix it.

How does wireless tether work? I know that it can receive a WiFi signal but it can also transmit one? Just curious. Also, is the new WiFi tether coming in the OTA going to be faster than the root one? The root WiFi tether is fine, but I most certainly wouldn't mind faster.

I know there was another thread on this topic that linked to the XDA forum but that thread is more about loading a specific kernel to enable AP Tether. I like Hydra's new kernels and you can do the same thing with them as well. I attempted to install the newest version of Wireless Tether from the market but it did not allow AP mode. So I found it's necessary, as verified elsewhere, to install the (wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre3.apk) version.
Once I did this and added the bin file, it worked great. WPA2 security is also included in this version. So to make it easy, I just created a zip that's already called Android.tether and has the required .apk and .bin already inside for AP Tether. This is not supported with the stock kernel, check to see if your kernel of choice supports it if you are in question. I can for sure verify the Hydra OCUV 1.113 ghz v0.8 kernels.

Finally broke down and rooted tonight.Picked up Wireless Tether from the market, had everything set kept getting limited access messages on my laptop.Did some searching and came across the solution to manually download the apk and a .bin file and put it in the android.tether directory on sd card. Was finally able to connect from my laptop. However, my connection is limited to "local only".I have tried using the access control, disabling access control, turning on encryption, disabling encryption, etc.Every time I connect, local only.I've flushed my IP info on the laptop and still local only. What do I need to do to get full access?

I am having issues getting the 2 wifi tethering programs to work correctly. I just rooted for the firstt time today. Both programs start up correctly and allow me to enable to wifi tethering but I can't get any device to see the wifi connection they are creating. I have tried both scanning for the network and trying to manually connect to it by typing in the SSID but I can't get any device to see the network. I am using a Droid X with the official 2.2 update rooted.

The main reason i wanted a rooted phone was so i could connect to my laptops ad hoc network and use a program for wireless keyboard and mouse. i cant really afford the real thing at the moment and with my laptop hooked up to my flat screen its kind of necessary to have..
So ive rooted my phone and tried a few roms. currently i have this one: [ROM] [05/18/2010] Tainted Vanilla V1.4 OVERCLOCKED - xda-developers
I always run into the same problem though. wired or wireless, i cant get it to connect right. wired never works in any way but i dont really care about that. wireless however shows some signs of working. it shows some data has been sent, not received though. and my computer will detect and connect to it, but seems to lose the signal after a few moments. when i bring up a browser it doesnt even look like something might load. it just says im offline. could someone help me with this?
The other part of this problem is i really just want to connect to my computers ad hoc network and use a wireless keyboard and mouse program. none of them seem that great unfortunately.. recommendations are appreciated. but my biggest issue is that i cant seem to connect to an ad hoc network. i believe my phone detected it only once while i was on the "white widow" rom, but could never quite connect..

I have a new Droid Incredible (upgraded from Eris ) but I cannot connect to an ad-hoc network I have setup. With wi-fi turned on, I scan for networks and nothing shows up. I even manually entered the network name and no security (which is how it's setup right now) and it still does not connect.

Okay, so I am totally going to be new to the android phone. I am so excited! I have a question, and fear it may be a stupid one, but will ask anyway! Do I need a wireless router for my Droid Incredible to connect to Internet? Or will the phone connect to the Internet like my LG Dare already does (click on icon and it goes to Internet)? Or can I connect both ways? Do you know what I mean? I am supposing that that if I had a wireless router, that would allow me wifi connection. Is that faster than just using the phone on its own?

We have multiple Android phones, including my Incredible, in our house on our wireless network. Is there a way to assign a name to each phone so that they are identified on the router like computers and other devices are? Currently the Android phones just show up as "unknown" device. The Wi-Fi is secured with 128-bit encryption, so I'm not concerned with the neighbors connecting, but it would be nice to be able to see which phones are on the network at any one time.

When I first ran across PhoneGap, I was excited because I envisioned simply dropping in the URL of a mobile site and simply updating the mobile site to use the devices capabilities when available.
Alas, it seems it is not that easy.
From what I understand (and I could be incorrect), any HTML/JS access to the device's hardware is limited to local 'pages'. So essentially create a HTML/JS local 'web' app to access the 'real' mobile web app by AJAX like calls. It seems a little redundant (at least to me) when the point is to simply extend the interface an existing mobile site.
Not trying to knock PhoneGap here, just wondering if there's a similar framework that allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly. Or if I've missed how that can be done with PhoneGap.
(Sure, I know "allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly" sounds scary - but the URL is hard-coded in the app, and HTTPS could provide authenticity. Of course, security is probably why this isn't supported by PhoneGap.)
