HTC Incredible :: Way To Clean Earpiece?
May 7, 2010
I know I'm not the only one with this issue, but it looks like the red ear piece gets funked up pretty easily. At first I thought it was just a lint trap, but I think it might be a mix of lint and ear skin/oil. Has anyone found any ways to clean that out?

All of a sudden I can't hear anything through calls. I can hear things if I play it through the speaker, but my ear piece doesn't put out anything. Has this happened to anyone else? I've tried factory resets with no difference.

Is it just my phone, I was just on the phone with someone that was on a landline, I noticed it was a little garbly (is that a word LOL) and a little hard to understand, almost like the beginning of each word was cutting off, I decided to put him on speaker phone so I can write stuff down and the phone call was now crystal clear. Anyone else notice that their speaker phone sounds better then if they are not on speaker phone?

I have my earpiece paired... I would like to be able to map - push the button on the side of the earpiece to activate the voice dialer... and then when finished another push would end the call.

I have a recently purchased Incredible (about 3 weeks) and within the last week the red earpiece on the phone has developed a very severe buzzing noise. Seems whomever I speak with can hear me fine, I just can't understand them. This hasn't been frequent but it is increasing. One day I had an ear shattering high-pitch noise that pretty much stopped all calls and I had to power down the phone. Could this be hardware or software related?

I just received a brand new Droid Incredible, SKU ADR6300VW2, as an insurance replacement from Asuron. I already purchased a Samsung Fascinate, which I plan on keeping. Is there a way for me to tell if I have a clean ESN on the Inc without opening the package?

Is there anything out there that cleans up all the old leftover files from uninstalled apps? I've seen a bunch of folders for things that I know I removed already, but don't know if all the empty folders I see are OK to delete. Just looking to keep things clean.

Anyone else having an issue with a bluetooth headset cutting out on the Evo. It started on a call and got so bad I ha to switch to the handset. it also did it playing MP3s right off the phone. This was a $90 motorola unit. So I took it back and picked up a nice Jabra for about $80 (just showing these aren't cheap units). I have not used the Jabra for a call yet, but the music cuts in and out for a few seconds every minute or so. Phone was in the holster on my hip so it wasn't a distance issue, the music is stored on the phone so it isn't a bandwidth thing.

My speaker isn't loud enough - when the phone is ringing/when in speaker in a phonecall / when listening to music. Same goes for the earpiece volume - and the volume is at the maximum level.

I currently have code that reads a recording in from the devices mic using the AudioRecord class and then playing it back out using the AudioTrack class.My problem is that when I play it out it plays vis the speaker phone.I want it to play out via the ear piece on the device.Here is my code:public class LoopProg extends Activity {
boolean isRecording; //currently not used
AudioManager am;
int count = 0;
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
am = (AudioManager) getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE);
am.setMicrophoneMute(true);
while(count <= 1000000){
Record record = new Record();
record.run();
count ++;
Log.d("COUNT", "Count is : " + count);
public class Record extends Thread
{ static final int bufferSize = 200000;
final short[] buffer = new short[bufferSize];
short[] readBuffer = new short[bufferSize];
public void run() {
isRecording = true;
android.os.Process.setThreadPriority
(android.os.Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_URGENT_AUDIO);
int buffersize = AudioRecord.getMinBufferSize(11025,
AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO,
AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT);
AudioRecord arec = new AudioRecord(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC,
11025,
AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO,
AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT,
buffersize);
AudioTrack atrack = new AudioTrack(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC,
11025,
AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO,
AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT,
buffersize,
AudioTrack.MODE_STREAM);
am.setRouting(AudioManager.MODE_NORMAL,1,
AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC);
int ok = am.getRouting(AudioManager.ROUTE_EARPIECE);
Log.d("ROUTING", "getRouting = " + ok);
setVolumeControlStream(AudioManager.STREAM_VOICE_CALL);
//am.setSpeakerphoneOn(true);
Log.d("SPEAKERPHONE", "Is speakerphone on? : " + am.isSpeakerphoneOn());
am.setSpeakerphoneOn(false);
Log.d("SPEAKERPHONE", "Is speakerphone on? : " + am.isSpeakerphoneOn());
atrack.setPlaybackRate(11025);
byte[] buffer = new byte[buffersize];
arec.startRecording();
atrack.play();
while(isRecording) {
arec.read(buffer, 0, buffersize);
atrack.write(buffer, 0, buffer.length);
arec.stop();
atrack.stop();
isRecording = false;
As you can see if the code I have tried using the AudioManager class and its methods including the deprecated setRouting method and nothing works, the setSpeatPoneOn method seems to have no effect at all, neither does the routing method.Has anyone got any ideas on how to get it to play via the earpiece instead of the spaker phone?

I literally just got a refurb eris today and when I went to make a phone call I could hear nothing through the earpiece and the person on the other end couldn't hear anything I said. This seems to be a version of the silent-call bug but this time I can hold a conversation with speakerphone and they can hear me, but when it's just through the earpiece like normal both parties get silence. Since this is a fresh refurb could someone with the OTA post their software data so I could compare it to what I have, I think I found one earlier while screwing around and it looked like it matched but now I want to double check.

I know this will sound like a weird question, but I was wondering if there is any way to reduce the earpiece volume? Even at it?s lowest setting it is a little louder than I prefer. Don?t know if there is an app or anything else that can be done to control the volume beyond what the phone does on it?s own? I know I could try Bluetooth, but that?s not always convenient.

My Plantronics BT earpiece has been working flawlessly the last several years but all of the sudden I have been having issues with it when used with the Droid. What is the BT earpiece of choice that seems to work well with the Droid? For some reason, people say they couldn't hear me (as if the BT muted itself out on its on); Its been disconnecting itself from the phone but it still shows its connected in the Notification window. Today it kept going from BT to phone and vice versa in the middle of a call! I was like the what in the world is going on! LOL! It has a good charge so I know thats not the issue. Maybe its time for a new BT earpiece! What should I consider?

New to the forums :x I've owned several droids in the past, but I've never decided to join the forums :P but I wanted to post this since it looks like no one has posted this yet O.o. It's barely visible and it doesn't do anything but it looks like it was clearly going to be used for LED.
I'm talking about on the left side of the earpiece...next to it, it's barely visible, there are two circles...I'm pretty sure that's where the LED would've been if it was implemented...so what gives? Why didn't Samsung implement the LED when clearly the design is right there...?
If you can't see it, I recommend looking under a lamp, it's hard to see without a source of light. It's on the left side of the earpiece. Is it possible the upcoming update can make that little circle into an LED notification O.O?

So I've noticed some background hiss during voice calls on my Eris. I thought the update would fix it, but so far it hasn't done a thing.
Has anyone had this happen with their phone? I'm thinking of just exchanging it for a new one...

When using Car Home mode - whether in the dash mount cradle or not - all navigation directions are coming through the earpiece speaker (above the word "Motorola" on the front) instead of the louder speaker-phone speaker (on the back). Totally useless.
I have Bluetooth turned off, so that shouldn't be the problem. Turning up the volume only increases the earpiece volume, it doesn't activate the other speaker. Anyone know how to fix this?

Anyone else noticing an audible buzz when listening to someone talk when on a phone call? Sounds eerily familiar to a blown speaker. Scary since I noticed it as soon as I got it..... I believe my phone was a return that they sold to me. It seemed to have come with some downloaded apps already (though I'm not sure) and the box was a little worn looking (no plastic around the literature either)
Boo hiss! it'll be 48 hours with the phone on Monday, and I'm getting a new one already

Android Version: 2.2 (Recent update)
Network: T-Mobile, UK
Taskiller Used?: None
[Optional]Are You rooted & which Rom: No rooting - stock ROM
Issue: Since updating to Froyo, I've had trouble with my earpiece - it seems to not have any sound at all when making calls - only when I'm turning 'speaker' on, when making calls can I hear anything at all. 'speaker' is rather prone to distortion whilst in use. But I'm more concerned about how I can't seem to get any sound to come out of my earpiece.
This seems to be directly following installation of Froyo - my phone definitely worked a day or two ago, prior to the update. I've tried to toggle the 'in call' volume up and down, but have had no joy - it's just silent. Haven't done any resetting as yet, but have powered off/removed battery.
I've seen a few threads which suggest possible hardware fault, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to verify this? Seems a bit of a coincidence that it's ... well, at least as best I can tell 'since froyo'.

Not as obvious as you might think. Hubby is deaf on one side, and is looking for a music/phone bluetooth headset.
I don't really mean a headset, i guess i mean an ear piece.
Probably going to be used mostly for music, so good controls and sound quality is most important.

First, my specs: I have an HTC Evo 4G LTE, software, firmware is current. I am using a Plantronics M50 earpiece. The problem: I have it in a Sprint car dock while driving and I make a couple calls on my way home from work using my Bluetooth. It started about 2-3 wks ago. I'll start a call and while the phone is ringing on the other end, it goes silent in my ear and I can hear it through the normal ear speaker on the phone (speakerphone doesn't kick on). I have to turn my Bluetooth off then on again to re-establish a connection. Then it stays on through the call. It happens when I answer a call as well. Happens when not in the car dock too. It doesn't do it twice in the same call, after reconnecting the Bluetooth, the call stays connected. I have already unpaired the Bluetooth and did a simulated battery pull (battery is not removable) and hard reset to clear data then pair it up again, but it still does it. I have a feeling that it's not the Bluetooth, but something in the Bluetooth software in my EVOLTE.

How is Bluetooth audio quality with your Evo? I'm using a Jabra Extreme earpiece and am experiencing poor audio quality. One person with whom I was speaking said that I sounded like I was running or was in a windy location (I was calling from a quiet hotel room). On my end there was noticeable static. As a test, I hung up and paired the Jabra with my Blackberry 8830, and the person with whom I was speaking said that I sounded a little distant, but otherwise clear. On my end, the audio quality was good.

I'm trying to change the audio path to earpiece from speakerphone, and I cannot get it to work on the G1: the audio always goes through the speakerphone. Here's the code snippet: /************************/ private AudioManager am; am.setRouting(am.MODE_NORMAL, am.ROUTE_EARPIECE, am.ROUTE_ALL); /************************/ I took logs for this issue and compared them to logs from the calling app when I turn off the speakerphone there and they look similar: (from calling app) D/AudioFlinger( 35): setRouting 2 1 -1, tid 57, calling tid 58 E/AudioFlinger( 35): mA2dpDisableCount is already zero I/AudioHardwareMSM72XX( 35): Routing audio to Handset D/HTC Acoustic( 35): msm72xx_enable_audpp: 0x0000 (from my app) D/AudioFlinger(35): setRouting 0 1 -1, tid 54, calling tid 58 I/AudioHardwareMSM72XX(35): Routing audio to Handset D/HTC Acoustic( 35): msm72xx_enable_audpp: 0x0000 The main difference here is that I'm trying to change the audio path for MODE_NORMAL, while the calling app is changing the audio path for MODE_IN_CALL.

I just discovered this today, and it has been mentioned in part before but I thought I'd share myself because it is an extremely useful feature, not to mention i had seen posts in the past that claimed this was not possible.Any app that produces sound, be it NAV, Voicemail or the music player can stream through your BT earpiece. I discovered it when my phone pocket dialed a strange combination of '?9797**' I have no idea how to reproduce a '?'After some reading I found that ** or p (pause?) will open the BT connection. The easiest way to enable it is to save a call contact shortcut of 'p' on the home screen. Just hit that icon prior to using whatever app you want and it will play through the earpiece. Hit the icon again to close the connection so you dont run into battery issue.Note you can dial ** to achieve the same (which will change into a p) however it will not work if you create a contact with **, you must create it with a p

I rooted my phone a week or so ago and love it 100 times more than before. However, I use it daily to listen to audio books. Before rooting when I had my earpiece in - if I received a message or call then sound came only through the earpiece. Now it comes through the earpiece and the external speaker on the phone. Suggestions on how to stop it?

I thought my Palm Pre had excellent sound quality. But the Epic sound is phenomenal. I talk with my girlfriend every night and last night I heard tons of background noise from her 10 year old cordless phone.
I never heard any of it before. I actually thought I might have a defective Epic,but today I made other calls and the Epic is outstanding. Actually every aspect of the phone is outstanding.

Last night, I updated my Droid to 2.2 (Verizon official) with the instructions here. Worked perfectly, and my phone hasn't had battery or slowness issues at all.
BUT, I tried making a call this morning, and all of a sudden my earpiece is silent! Plugging in headphones work, the speakerphone works so my phone is capable of making calls.
I tried to plug/unplug my headphones a few times, thinking that it was the phone thinking there were still headphones plugged in and that didn't work.
I then restarted my phone at least 6 times, including pulling the battery. Nothing thru the earpiece.
Out of frustration, I did a hard factory reset. Still no sound from the earpiece!
Do you guys think the 2.2 update killed my earpiece, or is it a coincidence?
