HTC Hero :: Root Access
Sep 13, 2009
I can see the root within native file managers, but I am unaware of a way to see it from my PC, is there SSH or something similar I can use?
What are useful folders to know? Like where apps are stored and can be customized, files I can mod or anything else of interest.

What is the best way to tell if you lost your root access? I updated my from darch 2.7 to 2.8, and just wanna make sure all is still good. I did it from the Darch updater via my phone. The adjust brightness program that that requires root access works but wireless tether doesn't seem to work. Does my have to be a certain level for the tether to work? It was at 14 percent or some thing like that.

So I've rooted my Hero, flashed a custom ROM, flashed a custom kernel, and then I downloaded some root-requiring apps (namely setCPU and Wifi Tether). However, whenever I open these apps, they do not ask me for Superuser Permissions!
For example, when I open setCPU, it says "No root access detected. Are applications allowed access to root? Operating in read-only mode." How do I fix this?

I've got a Sprint Hero with Android 2.1 (.6 and not .5 as required for unrevoked). All I want is root access (no custom roms) for some applications (mainly WiFi tether). I'm a complete noob to rooting and what I gathered from the guides is that all data is erased. Is there any way (regardless of how complicated) such taht I don't lose any data/apps and just gain root access?

I even tried flashing a custom rom (Fresh) on the last attempt and it just seems like it is giving me the Sprint stock Rom. Shouldn't the custom Rom look different? Once rooted do I still need to use Unrevoked method to grant superuser access for Apps?

I'm trying to gain root and having some problems...
I had my droid rooted for some time, running droid mod 1.0. All was well until recently the battery life turned to shit (followed all guides to resolve recent OTA update issues, but still shitty.) Because of this, I decided I would go back to stock, since I couldn't justify the rom's features if the battery would kick out after 16 hours. So I returned to stock no problem and received the OTA to upgrade to 2.1.
After getting the upgrade to 2.1, I wanted to at least have root access to run a few programs. I followed this guide:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html
to get SPRecovery back on my phone. Everything went well, it all checked out. After that I used SPRecovery to install the root update.zip. This worked fine, the root access app is in my tray and everything seems to be fine... HOWEVER when opening programs that require root access (setcpu and adfree are the ones I've tried) they say I don't have root access. I have tried reinstalling the update.zip file to no luck. USB debugging is ON. Is there a special update.zip to gain root on 2.1 (I saw no posts about that)? Is there some setting I missed this time around that I didn't the first time I rooted?

I've been real happy so far with Stock N1 and universal androot. I love the root apps.
Now that the update is out (2.2.1. frg83) I wanted to update and still have root access on stock. I was not able to update because I had deleted stock apps like amazon, twitter, etc., with titanium. I had to flash a stock ROM and then update to 2.2.1 worked, but no root access.
I even unlocked the bootloader to see if that would give me instant root but it didn't.
How can I go about getting root access on my n1 with 2.2.1.? I want to run a stock ROM and use rooted apps like titanium. Also to get future updates like gingerbread OTA. I do not want a custom ROM like cyanogen. Just stock 2.2.1. with root access. Whats the easiest way to achieve this? I tried installing amon ra, and it still wouldn't give me root access, couldn't install superuser, busybox, etc.

I believe the Java API does not give full access to the SMS database and other databases. Is there any way to have root access to some of those databases such as SMS and phone settings so that I can fetch some information out of it?

I am not able to understand one simple issue.. if there is no root access to file system even to the user who owns the phone then why on earth would the dev guide include commands like
adb push <local> sdcard .... when the sdcard of emulator is read only.. Is this some kind of mockery or sarcasm with the users?

We have root access even before the phone is officially released. When the phone is officially launched, Samsung hopefully release its source code and we'll have access to even more goodies. Perhaps source drivers *crosses fingers*. adb root exploit - test

I don't even care about the relatively short battery life. So I finally rooted the phone, narrowly avoiding disaster along the way. And now I'm like "now what?"
Obviously there is a wi-fi tether out there. And then there is the overclock. But I'm wondering what other apps you can use with a rooted phone that you otherwise can't. Are there paid apps out there that require root access? In other words, what's the big deal? Why do we root our phones?
This is an honest question. I'm not suggesting that it's not worth it - just trying to learn more about android. I'm a convert from Blackberry and I'm not going back.

This is now the second day that I'm trying to root my Evo 4G. So far, I've unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev.com method, but I can't get root access. I think my problem is an old version of hboot (0.99.0001, got it from latest HTC software update [2.3.4]), since the Revolutionary tool is saying that my version isn't supported. I've looked all over for how to update my hboot to 2.15 or 2.16, but nothing has worked. I still have S-ON.
I've tried flashing Amon Ra via command prompt (hangs on "waiting for device") and using the Android Flasher program (hangs on "please wait while your phone is flashed"). I've followed all the steps in the first method on this guide (androidforums com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488901-revised-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html, but to no avail.
How in the world do I go about rooting this thing? Or even just updating my hboot version?

I've have downloaded, unistalled, and re-downloaded DM Updater and when I open the app I get a message that reads: "Looks like your phone is rooted, but you have not given DM Updater access yet. You *must* check the remember box!"
I am indeed rooted, using sholes 2.0.5 (maybe thats why?) Never had any problems getting 'permission' for an app before. The dialogue box doesn't even pop up when I open DMU like it does with other apps the first time you run them and get the option to allow root access.

I read that official 2.1 (from another Droid forum) will be blocking root access. I too thought that this is kind of odd, so I thought to ask.

First of all i Understand that this would potentially void my Warranty, but what if im Perfectly fine with that?
Is it possible to gain root privileges on Xperia X10 and / or flash modified System Images, lots of developers and Power users would benefit from that.

Can anyone tell me, is it possible to use the ADB to pull and push a database from an app, without root privileges on the phone? For example, I know the location on my rooted magic and dream is:
/data/data/com.xxxx.xxxx/databases/xxxx
I know that you can use ADB without root, but when trying to use the shell - you can't view that location without root privaliges. But I have been told you can use push and pull if you know the file you want? Basically I want to pull a database from MY app on a non rooted phone modify it and push it back on. Only trouble I have is, the two phones I have are both root and I don't have access to a non root one to try it out.

My phone is not rooted yet. I just got it, first Android phone... taking my time.
Question 1:
I got the Open Home .apk, and while I like most features of Open Home, I don't like the icons it uses. I'd rather use the default Android icons. And I can't figure out how... there are no "default Android icon packs" out there. So I got clever. I opened my .apk with WinRar on a PC, found all the new icons I didn't like, and replaced them with the standard icons (which I cleverly extracted from the Android SDK).
However, I guess I wasn't so clever, because the new modified .apk won't install. I guess the creator of the .apk put in a protection of some sort to not let it install if it's been modified? Way over my head at this point...
Question 2:
If I root my phone, will I be able to access the root structure from PC over USB link? I was thinking, maybe the modified Open Home .apk won't install, but if I were able to get into the already installed default Open Home, and then replace the icons, maybe I'd have more success that way.

I really don't have any desire to root in general...perhaps if it were all simple and zero-risk, OK.
But I'm considering root just to get full, normal, access to microSD. Is root the only way to get access?

It seems that I accidentally changed the ownership of the su file to "system, sdcard_rw" and now I have no way to change it back to "root, root". Everything was working fine beforehand. I have already attempted to reroot using the same way I originally rooted the device and hard reset with no luck.
