If I was to root my phone will i still be prompted to update to 2.1 once orange and HTC realse it OTA? Or will I have to do it manually through the HTC website when it comes out?

I recently rooted my phone and was wondering how to install custom themes and lock screens for my hero. I am new to this as the title implies, so a link/instructions on how to install/create these would be what I'm looking for. I also am looking for solutions that do not need to install a new ROM as I just want to mod the current one that I have since i haven't found one I like. So far from looking at different exploits and methods to root different phones, the most simplest to understand is Peter Alfonso's Galaxy S rooting method posted today it seems all you need is to find a way on your device to install the following:
/system/bin/su (is this included in stock and replaced or just doesn't exist in stock systems?)
/system/app/Superuser.apk (it seems the Android OS has a "super user access" intent that this listens for -- so when apps try to access su this picks app it up?)
I put modoco's 2.1 custom ROM on my phone and when I booted up my my phone it came up with the message SIM network Unlock Pin, so far I've contacted Orange and they refuse to help me unless I pay them 170 and they say its something wrong with the phone.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have some specific questions, I have tried to read every single thread I can and considering I have only had the HTC Hero for 2 days I feel Im pretty clued up.My first concern if anybody would like to advise me..is internal memory. I have had the phone 2 days and only have 81 mb of internal memory left. I have just ordered a class 4 8G SD Card with adaptor, plus a USB reader for it....Now my question are:
1. when these items arrive should I partition the card? if so which method is the safest and "least" technical to ad apps2sd.....
2. With the supposed arrival of 2.1 (Im currently running cupcake 1.5), is it worth adding a new ROM to my Phone? I am not suffering any lag as yet so is it worth it?
3. How much data usage does streaming radio on Radio Time use up listening to it for an hour or so? (that one is just a shot in the dark if anybody has any ideas!
4, What benefits does Dolphin provide over the standard browser?
5. Are the any apps that improve the Camcorder cos boy does that thing suck?

how much space do text messages take up? i normally send over 3500txts a month and i just got my hero a couple days ago and really just started texting and wanna know how much space it takes up and if it takes up a lot if there is any way to move them to be stored on SD

With HTC releasing the kernal for 2.1 for the Hero today, what does this mean for me (the unrooted Hero user looking forward to 2.1)?
Is it any indication as to the update being released soon? I know the 99.9% answer to that is "it's up to Sprint to release it" and the 100% answer to that question is "your guess is as good as mine", but historically speaking, when the kernal for a build is released, what timeframe usually exists between kernal release and upgrade release? I guess the bigger question is, what exactly is a "kernal"?
I know most everyone is going to say "root, once 2.1 is released, the cooks will have the rooted version available shortly after" or "root, and if it does come out, you can always flash back the stock RUU and upgrade OTA then", but the think is, I dont' want to root and then with my luck, 2.1 gets released next week

Also, while on rooting, I actually brought a separate microSD card to make the Nandroid backup on. Is this a good/bad idea? Is the best way to do this to make a copy of the SD card on the PC, do the root and flash with a clean card) and then copy everything back to the card? I have an 8 GB card that is nearly full. Don't know how much space is required on the card to root/flash.
How can I stop email (Gmail) from being checked all the time. I want to manually check it as required.

View 1 Replies View RelatedNow that we are on 2.1, Juice Defender works on our phones. I have been running it for a couple days, and I think it is helping. Still need to do some better calculations. Once loaded, I did shut off Power Manager, as I think they conflict on some of the settings. Anyhow, has anyone else loaded it on the official 2.1 release? What's your experience?
View 8 Replies View RelatedMerely turning your phone on may be enough to prevent it from sleeping. What I'm about to tell you is 100% repeatable. I've done it about ten times now; it has happened every time. I'm running the stock Android 2.1 ROM from Sprint. <Background> When Android boots, it preloads a huge number of apps into RAM. Essentially, it's starting JVM processes and loading the classes of applications without actually executing any of their code. Android does this to reduce the lag you would feel when activating one of these apps. These preloaded apps are said to be EMPTY. There's no real penalty for preloading these apps since they're loaded in the background in otherwise idle CPU cycles and their processes will be terminated as needed to free up RAM for applications you begin using. </Background>
Although it should be impossible, one of those preloaded apps is preventing the Hero from sleeping. By process of elimination, I have found which one it is: Footprints.............
I am trying to route my HTC Hero (locked to Orange UK).Following jUsT2eXy's instructions :-
1)Download it.
2)Save it to your SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful
Ok, so on step 4, I am opening ASTRO, clicking InstantRoot, clicking Open App Manager (other displayed option is Browse file), clicking Install (then Install again). It then displays 'Application installed'. However, I get a notification stating 'Install Root failed / Root access was not acquired'. What am I doing wrong? More info if required Firmware = 1.5

I recently installed the new security patch that came out around the release of the EVO because I was unaware of what it entailed. However this battery life problem has become sickening and I would really love to root my phone and get rid of all this sprint trash on my phone.

And also, some things to think about: remember that the Hero only runs class 2 speeds, even if the card is class 6. Do you think this will change once we receive Android 2.1? Because if not, I would imagine that the phone would be slow opening apps (assuming apps to SD will be available).I know that if they do program the Hero to allow class 6 speeds, and allow apps to SD (without root) then the Hero could run MUCH faster than it does now.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOkay so i did the the unrevoked method of rooting my htc hero and it worked fine for a couple months however one morning my phone reset it self and the superuser permissions icon in the apps tray was gone. I tried running through the steps to root it again (How to root your CDMA HTC HERO running Android 2.1 (Windows) | MacHackPC) but the superuser icon never came back. I'm not sure what to do, I even tried pressing the on button and the home to select flash from recovery and that didn't work either. any idea how i can get my phone re-rooted?

Downgrading process may not be necessary on some models of GSM Hero. I have designed this guide for some one with extremely limited computer knowledge. Note. Windows 7 did give me some trouble so you may want to use Windows XP. I had to sue an XP machine to downgrade.

For this, I am calling startForeground() from my service's onStartCommand(). I don't want any notifcation from the service. But startForeground() needs a notification object as its second parameter. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am in celebration so I decided to share my technological milestone. I just had a bluetooth stereo installed in my car. I now play all my music from my Nexus one. I removed all my CDs and put them in storage. The hands free function is excellent! It works far better than my expensive phone system at work.
When I had a bluetooth ear piece it was a drag to use so I gave up. This is nothing like that. I would rather talk with the hands free through the stereo than talk directly on the phone. Music pauses when calls are made or received. Love this thing! Probably there are many people here who are rolling their eyes because they did this ages ago.
