HTC Hero :: How To Backup Data Before Upgrading?

Jan 11, 2010

I think I've worked out how to get the orange upgrade. But before I do I wanted to know how to back up data? I was thinking just copy and paste sd card contents onto the pc and then back again afterwards. Will this save everything as it was or will I loose contacts/ apps?

Android : Backup Before Upgrading To 2.2

Nov 22, 2010

A few weeks ago, I received a notification saying I could upgrade to 2.2 but that I should backup my phone first. I did not upgrade at that time because I didn't know (and still don't know) how to backup my stuff. I cleared the notification and have not seen it since. 1. Ideally, I would like to backup my applications, music, and mail accounts so that I can easily reinstall them after upgrading to 2.2. What is the best way to do that, keeping in mind that I am a relative beginner at this stuff? 2. Since I cleared the notification, I do not see a way to upgrade to 2.2. I looked through "Settings" and a few other places, but haven't had any luck. What would I have to do to upgrade to 2.2? To be clear, what I'm trying to do is upgrade to 2.2 and not have to rebuild my list of applications, mail setup, etc.

2.1 Update :: Problem After Upgrading To 2.1 - Restore My Backup

Nov 17, 2010

I upgraded my phone with no problems. However, when I tried to restore my backup I was informed that there wasn't one. Is this a common problem? Is there a way Ican stop that from happening niext time? I still have most of my contacts but they aren't linked to my facebook anymore and with the new upgrade I can't seem to be able to link them, except if I go through facebook. The problem with that is that some people use different names on there or I have them in my contact list under different names. Is there a way to link them manually anymore? Thats how I used to do it.

Motorola Droid :: Data Backup - Not An App Backup

Feb 23, 2010

I DLed Titanium Backup, but it wasn't obtaining root access. I read here that I probably need to update to a newer version of BB. After a bit of a fight, I finally managed to get BB 0.4 onto my Droid. I figured I was safe b/c I have Lookout, which also backs up data. Yeah, it backs up contacts and pix, that's it. So here I am w/ a nice, shiny new rom, and a completely wiped phone.

Now, I know my old info is still there. I know I could just recover into my last version. But then I wouldn't be on this rom. Is there any way for me to get that info on here, or do I have to do everything manual? Or could I restore the old version, and not need to do a wipe when flashing the new rom?

Man, no matter what I good I start to feel about myself w/ what I've already learned from you guys, I'm quickly reminded that I'm barely scratching the surface.

Android :: Storing Data On SD Card In Froyo - Files Deleted When Upgrading

Jul 24, 2010

I have an application which resides on the phone memory but downloads large data to the SD card on first launch (the app needs to be able to work without an internet connection most of the time) When using the recommend directory given in Froyo it seems all files on the SD card are deleted when I install a newer version of the .apk. I'd preferably like the files removed on uninstall, but not on upgrade since the files on the SD card aren't going to change between application versions, and forcing the user to re-download a large file that is independent of the application version does not seem reasonable. At the moment it seems I'm forced to use a different directory to the recommended one in order to stop Froyo deleting all the files when the application is upgraded. Am I doing something wrong, or is this how it is supposed to work (I'm guessing it is)?

I'm trying to upgrade from VillainROM 5.4 to 10 but not having too much joy. Do I follow the same procedure as I did when going from the stock Orange/HTC ROM to 5.4 or is it a bit more in-depth? I am unable to run the Amon RA recovery image software as it says "backup failed: could not run command". Titanium Backup isn't doing anything apart from giving me an "SU request" notice (even when I've tried to d/l Busybox).

I have had my Hero since November and love it, but I noticed recently I have just about filled my 2gb card with data.So ... what is the process involved? Is it simply a case of connecting to my PC, creating a folder and dragging the lot >>> swapping the card in the phone >> then dragging it all back onto the new card?

It asks me to make sure that the phone is connected to the USB cable and for the USB cable to be connected to the PC. Both are connected but I noticed that the phone is powered off. It will not power back on while connected. It will once I disconnect it from USB cable. This leads me to believe that the phone starts to do what it is supposed to but somehow disconnects.

Android :: Android 2.2 Data Backup - How To Backup DefaultSharedPreferences?

Oct 17, 2010

I am implementing the new BackupAgentHelper from android 2.2. For it to work you need to supply the name of the SharedPreferences that you want to backup:

public class MyPrefsBackupAgent extends BackupAgentHelper {
// The name of the SharedPreferences file
static final String PREFS = "user_preferences";

// A key to uniquely identify the set of backup data
static final String PREFS_BACKUP_KEY = "prefs";

// Allocate a helper and add it to the backup agent
void onCreate() {
SharedPreferencesBackupHelper helper = new SharedPreferencesBackupHelper(this, PREFS);
addHelper(PREFS_BACKUP_KEY, helper); }}

Problem is I use the PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences() method in my application to get the default shared preferences instance. Now I need to supply the name of that file. How can I find out what name that is?
