HTC Hero :: How Can I Prevent Sprint Navigation From Running In Background All Time?
Oct 14, 2009
How can I prevent Sprint Navigation from running in the background all the time? Every time I go on the market, browser, check my email, or send a text, Sprint Navigation is shown running in all of my 3rd party app managers. I have task killer so I can kill it as I please, however I would like to completely prevent it from starting up when i'm not even using it. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this?

What exactly can keep an app running in the background, regardless of what efforts your take to disable it?
If I don't use an app much and don't want it running, I normally freeze the app. If it is an app I tend to use a bit more frequently, I take other measures such as an app manager that allows me to be extremely precise as to how and when it should run such as on startup, battery level, configuration change, application change, etc. I really don't have the time to do this for every application.
With that said, I'm wondering what other methods, other than freezing and the other mentioned above, I can take to prevent an app from running in the background?
I will give you a perfect example...
There are some third-party apps I have downloaded that I know I will use occasionally. One example is CamScanner. For the life of me, I can't get this app to stop running in the background without extensive efforts mentioned above. No matter what I do, it just pops up again in running applications.
How can I ensure the app will not run in background while not resorting to freezing the app, which will prevent me from quickly accessing it when needed?

I have checked for related threads to see if this was formerly addressed. It's been discussed generally, but neither specifically to the CDMA HTC Hero or the procedure I'm going to summarize below:
If you press:
Home --> and hold it for a couple of seconds
You get pictures (icons) of the last six apps you've run.
I was in the Sprint store today and the rep who also uses the HTC Hero told me there's an App that stops them, which can be downloaded at the Android Market.
It's called " Kill-Something? "
It's an App we can download that will force these off and perhaps save battery power, or at least stop them from running in the background.
Questions
1) Anyone know the name of this App?
2) Is it useful? Have you had any experiences with it either positive or negative?
3) Any other tips (in layman terms please) on stopping Apps from running in the background on Sprint HTC Hero?

For those of you running the leaked 2.1 for the Sprint Hero, can you tell me if there is a native task manager type of option that allows you to see all the background apps that are running? If there is such a thing, how do you access it? Does it allow you to switch between running apps? Does it allow you to kill the app (like a task killer would)?

My htc hero can't seem to keep apps running in the background, save for a few, such as the engadget app. when I press home from the internet browser or the PDF viewer and try to get back into the application, the internet browser will resend info to get the page I was on back and the PDF viewer will restart just like the browser and end up in a PDF file I wasn't in before. It seems that the applications restart themselves when I get out of them. Also, I just downloaded the 2.1 update for TELUS, so I'm not sure if thats to blame.

I'm not buying my phone from Sprint, so I doubt they would exchange it if I got dust under the screen. Is it easy to pop the phone open and hit it with a blast of compressed air if need be? Also, what's the best case for preventing dust? I know the Otterbox cases are fantastic at this, but they don't seem to support the Hero. Also, is Android 1.6 available for the Hero?

I haven't rooted or flashed a new ROM to my phone yet, but I'm thinking about it.After reading Fresh 2.0d seems like a good one, especially since it doesn't have all the bloatware with it.The only app that I want from the bloatware is the Sprint Navigation.I saw the file to reinstall all the applications back, but I only want the Navigation.Does anyone know how to flash just that app to the phone and skip the rest of the Sprint bloatware?

I went to use Sprint Navigation today, and received this message "New version of Sprint navigation available. Upgrade now?" Has anyone done this upgrade? If so, please let us all know what differences you see, and do you recommend the upgrade? I'm currently using Sprint Navigation Premium v2.8.

I just discovered that Sprint Navigation was on my phone. I was with a friend of mine driving and told her I needed to get a GPS (with all the times I'm getting lost, etc.)She has a Palm Pre and told me I have Sprint Navigation.I had no clue.I've even heard this was exclusive to Sprint. With all the marketing, and talk about 2.1 with GPS Navigation, how could I not have known about this wonderful App on my Android HTC Hero?

I've been wanting to get a dedicated GPS unit for a couple years now, but could never justify the cost over other things. In comes Sprint navigation. Wow, this thing is just as good as my friend's Garmin! Except it's built into the phone which means one less device to carry around. GPS lock is near instantaneous and directions have been spot on!I'm thoroughly pleased I didn't waste the money on a dedicated unit.

When I sync my Sprint HTC Hero with Windows Vista (using HTC Sync version 2.0.8), I get the following error message: "The application com.android.providers.calendar (process com.htc.calendar) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." I also get this message occasionally when I'm not syncing. It doesn't seem to prevent my Hero from syncing new calendar events, but the error message is annoying. Anyone have an idea why I'm getting it and what I can do about it?

Certain apps disable auto-sleep while they're open.Is there any way to force my device (Nexus 7) to sleep in these apps after a certain time.
Example. I have a Nexus 7 in my dash and leave navigation running. When I turn my ignition off the charger turns off however the tablet doesn't because I left navigation on.

I am unable to login to the Sprint Navigation website. Even though I am entering my correct phone number and the PIN the Sprint HTC Hero Nav app gave me, I am getting an "Incorrect Phone number or PIN" error message. Called Sprint support, they weren't able to login either.

I used to get stuff like "turn left onto such and such street." Now I get "such and such street" and I have to look up to see whether the arrow is left or right. So, I checked settings. I'm on "full audio." But, I set it to instructions only, saved settings, even rebooted the phone, then reopened the app, but no change. I set it back to full audio, saved, reboot, nothing. Still not getting full prompts, the way it used to.. NOTHING changed, that I can figure out. It just stopped working properly on Friday. I'm running Fresh 1.1 rom, but I flashed that about 2 weeks ago and the navigation prompts were working fine .. until Friday.

I recently just rooted my phone to 2.0d and added the live wallpapers to it. Well after I added the live wallpapers my google navigation wasn't working properly. Whenever I try to use it, it doesn't show my route like where I'm going. It looks like just a black screen in the middle and the voice doesn't work.

So, I upgraded last week to DamageControl v2.09.1 and had a few issues, but everything has worked itself out and its working fine now.
The only problem I'm having is that I can't change my home screen wallpaper. I can change the lockscreen and I can do everything else with the phone except this. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm having trouble setting up my wallpaper. Every time I click on "Set as Wallpaper" it doesn't let me choose the whole entire picture. It only lets me select a small portion of it. Any help?
I just got the HTC Hero because I switched it out with the Moment and so far I like the Hero a lot better.

What is difference between "Navigation" and "Sprint Navigation" apps?Newby to the smart phone, and am still trying to understand this "app" stuff. The "Navigation" app is a blue arrow, and is the one I use for map and voice navigation. The "Sprint Navigation" app seems to do the same thing in a much more belabored manner. Are these both Sprint, or what? Why two similar apps?Is one supposed to do something that the other doesn't. I don't get it.
