HTC Hero :: Device Turned Itself Off - Powered On After Battery Pull
Feb 22, 2010
My Hero did something odd today, it turned itself off and didn't want to turn back on again (wasn't doing anything on it either). Took out the battery, put back in and all was good. No loss of contacts etc.

I turn my Ally off for the night, plug it in to recharge & it turns itself back on. So, I turn it off again &, back on it comes! I want the thing off so it does not make any alert-noises and bother those within earshot. I suppose I could put it on Silent, but, come-on! This should be an allowed thing to do to a phone. Why in hell would it ever be set up to come back on when I deliberately just turned it off!
Note: "Stay Awake" under "Development" is not checked.

My Droid showed 100% battery charge last night when I powered it off. When I turned it on this morning it showed 70%. What gives? Is this phone running all the time, even when it appears to be powered off? I recently learned that applications running on Android can implement what is called a "partial wakelock" which prevents the CPU from going to sleep.
Apparently it was discovered earlier that the built-in messaging app on the Sprint HTC Hero did this, resulting in a battery drain issue. With this in mind, I decided to do a factory reset (removing all apps and system settings). Then I repeated my overnight, power off battery drain test with no third party apps installed. Sure enough, after 8 hours I was still at 100% charge. I have not yet reinstalled any apps so I can't identify the culprit.

I am having a pretty annoying issue that just started tonight. My phone died on me due to the awesome battery life of the hero, upon recharging it and turning it back on as soon as it starts to boot up it gives me the HTC sense force close error and won't let me go any farther. That's all it will do, I've tried turning it off and pulling the battery but to no avail.

My Droid X wont charge when its turned off. When I plug it in the green charge light comes on then the phone boots up and shows its charging, but if you shut the phone off while its plugged in, it wont charge. The green light stays lit but no charge in the morning. So if you boot it up, it will charge when turned on. With my DINC it was best to charge the phone when it was turned off. This is all pluged in and charging from my computer. I am getting about 12 hours on a full charge, thats about 4 more hours than I was getting from my DINC.

Today I dropped my HTC Hero on the ground from less than a foot above and when it dropped it turned off so I went to turn it back on and after multiple tries finally got it to the hold screen. When I went to pull down the hold screen to go to the home screen it went to the screen when you're turning it on that says "hTc". I immediately hit end and it goes back to the hold screen then when I pull it down it again it says that some of the applications, which I assume by their name is part of the phone processing, isn't working so I have to force it close. The weird thing is I still get my emails and texts and when a phone call comes in it says the Android application isn't working. Anybody know what is going on here?

It looks like I am obliged to let my phone turned on to make it ring for the alarm clock. Am I right? At least, this is what seems to happen with Math Alarm Clock (I did not test yet with the built-in alarm clock).

First off my browser won't let me click certain buttons after a few hours of the phone being on. Not a big deal but when I shut the phone off it won't turn back on unless I do a battery pull. This happens 2-3 times a day so can get annoying. I'm about to get a case though and don't want to keep taking it off and on and risk messing up the fit or scratching it. Does anyone know of a program that shuts the phone off like a battery pull?

I wasn't an idiot and pulled it out on purpose. But maybe from pulling it from having my phone rooted is the cause. Anyways, its gone. Does anyone have any fixes? I was thinking of putting scotch tape around the battery with a little slack from both ends on the one side, so I have a non sticky homemade "pull tab". It should work but just wondering if anyone has a better idea I'm not thinking of.

Does any one know of an Application for Android that will allow you to reset your device (like a battery pull would do) only with out having to physically pull the battery yourself. Also, I would like to know if there are any such apps, do any of them allow you to schedule the pulls?? (Good for letting your phone reset itself at times when your not using it) There's a similar Blackberry App (Quickpull, just google it) Thanks for the help and if there are no such apps, I wouldn't mind paying for a developer to make such an app.

Just picked up the Epic yesterday, and already been having issues all day long. The phone has does this about 5 or 6 times today. It will fade away, and when I come back to it a little later to check messages or anything, it will all be blacked out, and nothing will come back. (by hitting the power button) No matter what I push, the screen stays black, and the phone seems like it is off. (A few times, the lights have stayed on, and the buttons act like they are responding, but nothing works still) It has also lost signal completely twice today, and I've had to restart it to get signal back.

Sometimes, after manually locking the phone, I'll try to unlock the phone but the "swipe" bar no longer shows up. It's almost comical when this happens, as I can get phone calls, emails, texts etc during those times (I can even pick up/reply), but the phone goes immediately to that "swipe less" lock screen right afterward. There is no way for me to unlock the phone (even a long press on the lock button doesn't work), so I have to take off the case and do a battery pull to reset. Has any experienced this and does anyone have any fixes for it?

I have set up the one-click root on my X, and have also licensed and installed Titanium Backup. I am now ready to remove some of the crapware on my phone. I just have this last question. After "freezing" and/or removing some of the crapware, do I need to do a Factory Reset, or, can I just do a Battery Pull?

I mentioned this in another thread but thought it might garner more attention here. I keep seeing people indicate that this or that problem is fixed by a "battery pull." While I understand that a frozen/unresponsive phone must have its battery pulled in order to get it to reboot, I am failing to see what this accomplishes when your phone is functional. Is there something that a battery pull does that shutting down your phone does not do? I was trying to work it out in my head and couldn't come up with anything. Memory is cleared when you power it down. Cache is stored on the flash card, so that doesn't go away. Nothing stays powered up during the shutdown. So, help me out here. What does it do, that holding down the power button and selecting "Power Off" does not do?

Just thinking, should the Push Gmail use less battery power than "Pull" such as Yahoo Mail. It would seem that the pull process is having to go look every 15 min and the Push process is merely sending it as it arrives.

I returned the Moto Droid on day 29 because it was bulky, I worried about the slider mechanism (and barely ever used the physical keyboard), and because I was very envious of the Sense UI on the Eris. The biggest thing was that when I had to turn the phone off or the couple of times I had to do a battery pull, it took 5-10 minutes before the phone would let me make a call. I have been pretty happy with the Eris as I love the physical buttons and the trackball and Sense UI and the form factor. But looking over the Droid threads on various forums, I do miss the beautiful screen and the quickness of the browser and changing between screens. I was a bit pissed that the software updates were after the exchange period for people who bought the phones when they came out. It really doesnt matter I suppose as I am not able to exchange this phone out for anything else. I understand why Verizon doesnt let you exchange repeatedly but its so hard to know how well a phone will do for you until you use it for a while. Full price is always an option if a higher-end HTC comes out but my husband wouldnt be too thrilled with that I think.

I didn't have this situation until Twix and now, DOTS. When I check "Battery use", I see a bunch of programs in there, without turning them on or using them like Android OS, Media, Swype, Market, Dialer ... In Twiz, even when wifi is on, it won't actually connect unless I manually connect it and it disconnects when the screen is automatically turned off. I had great battery life.
I drained the battery and recharged before I flashed ODIN. I pretty much did everything the same way as the previous times I flashed a new rom. I drained the battery again but that didn't seem to help.
I installed Advanced Task Killer. A while after I kill selected apps (a long list), the apps tend to turn on on their own. I had unchecked "Background data" but that didn't help either. Wifi connects unless I literally turn it off. (That wasn't the case.)
Is there a few check marks that I miss?

First off, let me state my phone is rooted, but this problem happened pre root as well. Certain applications, the two I think I've noticed doing it so far, were weather bug, and temp monitor. That have on going notifications, will randomly cause my phone to not turn back on from sleep. I have to do a battery pull just to get the phone back up.

Anyone else deal with this, I will use it like 30 seconds prior, lock the screen and go to pick it up and nothing, I have to pull the battery and reboot. Happens a couple times a month maybe, usually happens when I am actually trying to do something. I am currently running on Nonsensikal 8.8 but it did it on Ivans 1.0 and Nonsensikal 7.5 as well. It may have done it on the stock 2.1 rom as well, but I cannot remember. It seems to happen more often now that it is on Froyo though.

Running a Bell Galaxy-S with 2.1 and the OCLF. Recently when I lock my phone or it just goes to sleep (screen shuts off) I can't unlock it. The screen just stays blank and it requires me to pull the battery and replace to boot it back up. There doesn't appear to be any consistency with this error and I haven't installed any new apps in recent time that would have changed the phone around.

If I ever want to restart my phone I have to pull my battery multiple times to get it to boot. It will load the Motorola M and sit there. Usually takes about 2 or 3 battery pulls to move onto the droid logo. I am on 2.3.9 Leak and am running the Revolution Theme.
