HTC Hero :: Best Way To Find Free WiFi Hotspots?
Sep 12, 2010
Am pretty new to the world of Android / HTC Hero and smartphones in general and was just wondering if anyone has any hints for the best way to search for free WiFi hotspots?
Are there any decent apps out there to do this - or is there a shortcut way to find them through the phone?

I want to host an INFRASTRUCTURE (not AD-HOC), otherwise known as a SoftAP (Access point) on wifi. This is possible with many applications, but they all want to use a mobile data connection. Is there any application that allows you to host a SoftAP WITHOUT a 2G/3G/4G connection? This is just for playing over WIFI between a samsung galaxy s3 and an older android 2.1 tablet. These cannot see AdHoc networks.
Anyways, I'm interested in any application that allows hosting of an infrastructure WiFi network without tethering to just host a wireless lan point.

So I got a replacement for my Milestone yesterday, I logged to my google account, went to the Market->Downloads, and I only found my purchased apps nothing of my free apps.I did a backup applications with astro on my old phone, then restore apps on the new one, but that doesn't give access to the updates. Is there a way to find my free apps list, or I have to search for them one by one in the market?

I would like to be able to select available WIFI hotspots from the notification dropdown. this would seem to be the most practical way to swap between various hotspots without going through the settings menu. But I can't find anything on the market, although if I want an app to toggle WIFI on and off i'm glad to know there will never be a shortage of available apps!

My problem is that when one makes a hotspot, every time one presses it, it flashes for a moment in blue (maybe other colours as well, just for the widget I am doing at the moment it is blue), to indicate the act of clicking on it. This is ok for small hotspots, however for something relatively large it looks rather weird. Is it possible in any way to turn off this flashing.

All I really want to do is root my phone to allow free wifi tethering so I don't have to pay sprint another $30 a month, be able to control my CPU so I can try to help my battery a bit.... and whatever else I can do to help the battery.
What is my best choice for rooting to get what I want? And also, do I need to install a ROM to get this.
I know I need a wireless tether app for rooted phones, the setcpu app for my cpu control.

PdaNet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! Unlike other tethering software that only supports Proxy connections, PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes on the computer. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.
You can follow the latest update of PdaNet for Android at

I want to do is set up my HTC Incredible (currently running official HTC Sense/Froyo) as a wifi hotspot (not paying verizon $20 for 2GB/month, and not usb tethering.. need wifi).
Unfortunately, even though stock Froyo 2.2 supports free wifi hotspot, the official (un-rooted) froyo for the incredible forces you to pay $20/month to verizon to use as a wifi hotspot.
I'm assuming this is correct, but I just wanted to make sure: If I root my phone, then I will be able to install a rom and use it's built-in free wifi hotspot capabilities using my data connection, right?
Also, is there a rom that has HTC Sense, as well as free wifi hotspot capability? I would like to keep using HTC Sense over "stock" Froyo, and still be able to use free wifi hotspot capability if possible.

For those of you trying to squeeze as much time out of the battery as possible, I came across this nifty program which I don't think has been mentioned yet: AppBrain: Y5 - Battery Saver - Android app on AppBrain Official: Y5 Battery Saver: Home. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network, it uses the GSM base tower identifier (CellID) to determine the location of the Wi-Fi network and stores it in memory. It does not use the GPS. I saved my home network earlier this afternoon and went out, Wi-Fi was turned off while I was out, then after I came home and started using my phone, I was connected again, so it seems to be working so far.

I'm certain this is a router issue seeing as my Eris can find all other hot spots, but my phone cannot detect my Belkin Wireless N+ router, even when it's very close. I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and how to maybe fix it.

Just wondering why my Incredible can't find my TP2's wifi hot spot. I'm at work, and it found three secured networks near me (to which I don't have the PW of course), but it never picked up on my TP2 although they were less than a foot apart from each other. So I added the TP2 network via the add function, and it said my TP2 network was out of range. My work laptop was able to connect to the TP2 (even through VPN) with no problem.

Hi, my Xperia x10 can not connect to my cisco router, it can't even find it, the router is fine, and so is the phone since I've connected it to other routers, and that router had several phones and laptops connected to it. I'm using Android 2.6 kernel.

In my college, there are several Wifi networks but when i connect to any of the wifi network, either it doesn't connects or if it connects, internet doesn't seems to work. I asked them and they told that they have enabled something like proxies. But they are not sharing the proxy with the students.
Is there any app or any tweak which allows to connect to these Wifi networks without proxies or is there any way to fetch the proxy from the network ?
I have Galaxy Mini, CyanogenMod 7

My Hero takes a long time to connect to my home wifi. I usually go in to the settings and hit "Scan" repeatedly before it connects. Sometimes it fails connect, and I have to go into Settings to try again. Is there a way/app to scan automatically or re-attempt to connect again? Maybe there's something I'm not thinking of?

I bought my Xperia x10 mini yesterday, and one of the first things I did was to set it up for WiFi in my house (which I already have 2 laptops and a stationary PC connected to). Setting it up was easy and quick, but my phone doesn't find the network, not even if I am standing right beside the router. I have tried to restart the WiFi connection, restart my phone, delete and re-add the home connection, but the phone still doesn't connect to the network.
The network's SSID isn't broadcasted for security reasons, could this be the problem? When I search for networks, it doesn't find any 'unnamed' networks like the windows pcs do. (which is normally the one I need to connect to.) Is there something wrong with my hardware? Or my software (my phone is completely up-to-date)? (Except broadcast the SSID, which is not an option..)
