HTC Eris :: Tazz 8 Worth Wipe?

Sep 23, 2010

I have tazz 7 currently and up until now I have never wiped because it was not required. So is the jump from 7 to 8 worth the effort of backing up. I use astro because it is faster than the free version of titanium and froyo never seems to reload all of my apps for some reason.

HTC Droid Eris :: Is This Worth Going To Verizon For A Replacement?

Jul 6, 2010

I did a factory reset last week after reading some of the posts about it here. I had some lag issues, and the Verizon tech also suggested that. I also did the *228 tip to reprogram the phone as was suggested. It was OK for a few days, but I'm having similar problems again. Before I go to Verizon, I thought I'd list them here and see what you good folks thought.

1) I still get terrible lag from time to time, and at all different times. I know that when I'm trying to do something with the battery low (under 25% lets say), its slow, but I chalk that off as understandable.

2) Sometimes when I send a text message out, I see that it takes at least 5 minutes to get sent. During this time, I do notice that time in the notification bar is anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes behind. Then, after a few minutes, catches back up to be in sync with the time shown on the HTC Sense widget on my home screen. BTW, that frozen time has occurred when the phone is just sitting there, not necessarily during a text message being sent, so SOMETHING is bogging it down.

3) Sometimes, and this has been increasing over the last few days, when I try to type something, either in a text message or in someone's contact info, I get the text box up and the virtual keyboard, but no text shows up at all when I'm typing. I see the characters that pop up, but nothing ends up in the text box. I have to exit out of that app and try again later. Very frustrating when you're trying to text someone and you have to wait 5-10 minutes to do it.

4) I know about the battery issues and how poor the battery life is. I've tried to remedy that by only checking my email, Twitter, and Facebook once per hour, but my battery still drains pretty fast. Today, for example, I took the phone off of the charger @ 7:30am. It was at 28% left @ noon! Granted, some of the issues that I describe above were going on and probably had a lot to do with that (clock lagging behind, texts taking 5 minutes to go out), but still, almost 75% of the battery gone after only 4 hours SUCKS! I've done the usual remedies (power the phone down then back on; battery pull; factory reset last week, etc.). It seems to help for a very short period of time but reverts back to the problems I describe above. So, is a trip to Verizon in my future? If they replace it, is a refurb acceptable to get? I've read varying stories ranging from "my refurb works like a charm" to "my refurb has the same issues as my old phone". I don't want to inherit the same problem, or someone else's problem. Am I basically stuck here until my "new every 2" is up in November 2011?

HTC Droid Eris :: 2.1 OTA Didn't Wipe Out Anything

May 18, 2010

Besides my contacts, nothing got wiped out. Settings, pictures, apps all remained the same and untouched. I thought they were supposed to be wiped automatically? The reason why I feel a little sketched right now is because I got impatient with the update so I did the " *#*#CHECKIN#*#* " method and it worked. Can anyone tell me if it's legit to do that? Also, I've heard I should do a Factory Reset after I receive the update.

HTC Droid Eris :: Can't Wipe SD Card / Way To Do

Aug 25, 2010

This is driving me insane! I cannot seem to get rid of the rom on my phone! I go into the nand and wipe the system, dalvik cache, and ext, yet I can't seem to completely wipe everything! I even went in and removed the partition, then repartitioned the SD card and it came back up into my rom with all my settings intact. Of course the file system was empty when I mounted it to my PC.

I recently tried to blow away the partition and redo it and did all three wipes after and reboot, apparently I missed volume and it installed the xtrrom zip all by itself, despite the fact that partitioning the SD Card should have gotten rid of that.. so after I set it all up, mounted it, and went into the file system, I have one directory called LOST.DIR and nothing else.

What teh hell is going on here?

HTC Droid Eris :: Confirmed 2.1 Will Require A Wipe

May 7, 2010

The race is on. Which first-generation Android phone will receive an upgrade to Android 2.1 first?
Many thought Sprint would lead off (with all the noise they made), but they have yet to produce. T-Mobile remains fairly quiet, but they could jump ahead to Android 2.2 since Google is in charge of the software for some of their phones.
Today we learn that Verizon has posted the details for the upcoming Android 2.1 upgrade of the Droid Eris. Customers will receive the update over the air (OTA), which is good so customers don't have to take their phone in to Verizon. Other carriers like Sprint will be release their upgrades over the wire.
Like we predicted, it appears the Android 2.1 upgrade will wipe the internal memory of the phone. Verizon warns customers that they will need to reinstall some applications, their contacts will be erased (don't worry, they are all synced in the clouds), and some phone settings will return to defaults.
The update is mandatory, so customers should start looking at apps to backup their apps (or just re download them from the Market).
No information was proved on when the OTA update would be available, so it could drop at any time. When Verizon released the information for the Droid 2.1 upgrade, it still took several weeks before they finally pushed it out (but they did have delays).
How do you feel about a software upgrade wiping your phone? I don't think it is that big a deal and it will benefit most customers by greatly speeding up their phone. However, I can also understand how many unknowing customers might accidentally delete some piece of data.
"You will need to reinstall applications."Details of Droid Eris 2.1 upgrade are listed below.Enhancements:Pinch-to-zoom is now available when using the Gallery and Google Maps.
New support for voice-to-text entry.
Whenever a text-entry box appears, simply tap the microphone icon on the virtual keyboard and speak.
New Gallery application with 3D layout. View and share photos taken with your phone and images from your online Picasa Web albums.
New Leap thumbnail view lets you pinch to jump between the seven panels on your home screen.
Additional calendar views and easier access to contacts make navigating even quicker.
Google Maps with Navigation provides free, traffic-enhanced, turn-by-turn navigation.
With the Enhanced Android Market, you'll enjoy a better browsing experience as well as even more applications, including Verizon Wireless content featuring self-service applications.
Ability to log onto and access multiple Google accounts at once.
Support for 19 Microsoft Exchange Server policies makes your phone more secure and business friendly.
Desk Clock intelligently dims your screen and displays the current time while charging.
Location-based cinematic full screen weather keeps you on top of changing conditions.
Improvements:
Free Yahoo! Mail is now supported—simply sign in with your Yahoo! email address and password.
Longer battery life due to power savings.
Improved You Tube video playback.
Better Blue tooth support, including contact transfer.
Automatic settings for POP3 verizon.net email accounts.
Added support for stand-alone Wi-Fi when device is in airplane mode.
Improved handset audio when disconnecting a wired headset.
Faster power-up time.
Improved swipe-unlock functionality.
Added support for Microsoft Office 2007 documents.

My question to the brilliant minds here, If I factory reset and wipe data will it unroot my Eris? I'm selling my Eris tomorrow and advertised it as rooted. Another thing is that sprint is really advertising this as a 4g phone but for the normal customer I would think they would beupset that their signal isn't reliable...well the point of this thread its to see how everybody else feels about wimax. Games :: Future Of Android 3d Gaming Is Better GPU Worth It?

Aug 26, 2010

so I wanted to get an Evo, but then I saw all these graphic tests and found The EPIC to have amazing GPU. Now I really like the evo for htc sense, bigger screen and looks. But I want the epic for its GPU. I dont care much for the keyboard. Im afraid the GPU on evo will be outdated and not run games anymore. Im afraid cuz my cousin got a Moment and he cant run any of the good 3d games, i got my pre before him and I can run better 3d games then him.Should I get the epic just for the GPU? Do you guys even see android gaming taking off and using the epic's internals or will the GPU of EVO(Adreno 200) be fine for current and future android games. As I see it, most devs are using the N1 to develop on, so im guessing the GPU in the evo should be fine right? or should I be safe and get the Epic GPU and be able to use the keyboard for gaming, but not be satisfied by looks? (maybe when i use it in person ill fine in love with the looks lol)SHORT VERSION Should i get the EVO and not be worried about highend 3d games sucking/being laggy? Is the GPU on the Evo good enough because it is the current standard for 3d games? Dont most developers develop on n1, thus the Evo gpu will be perfect? Also I think A lot of developers are optimizing games for the snapdragons. is any of this true?

Nexus :: Worth Root And / Or Custom ROM If Running Froyo Already?

Sep 7, 2010

I'm a Nexus One user so already using froyo and of course stoked with it.Given that the phone is already superfast and tethering works, is there any real benefit to root, and / or custom ROMs?Previous to froyo the main motivation for custom rom would have been tethering but thats now moot. I am happy with stock android UI and wouldn't bother for just ui tweaks. I am interested however in possibility of getting better battery life, but am leery of losing the comfortable convenience of OTA stock updates. One of the reasons I picked an N1 at the time was that I knew I'd be getting 2.1 and 2.2 before any other model also side question, when you go custom rom and do a backup before flashing, does restoring the backup literally restore everything (apps, data, settings etc.) completely? i.e. everything remains in exactly the right place, your apps are all 100% intact, gmail/contacts/exchange/sms etc. all there etc.

Android :: Is It Worth Writing A ContentProvider - Using Cursor Adapter?

Sep 14, 2010

We are connecting to a number of WebServices and fetching a lot of structured data(XML). We are parsing this data and storing them into SQLite tables. This part of the application runs periodically in the back ground.

On the foreground, the data fetched is displayed in ListViews. We have used ArrayAdapter to back these lists up. The thing is, every time the Actvity starts or data set is refreshed, we have to load the ArrayLists by querying the database and call notifyDataSetChanged() on the Adapter. This slows down the application and affects the User experience.

Question: 1. I'd imagine using a CursorAdapter might result in performance gain, since the framework will take care of managing the cursor. Is this assumption valid? 2. Will the CursorAdapter take care of reflecting updates to the database on the screen automatically? 3. Will I have to write a ContentProvider if I choose to use CursorAdapters? 4. Are there any other considerations that we need to make?

Motorola Droid : Apps For Phone That Are WORTH Paying For?

Dec 3, 2009

I haven't paid for any apps yet though I have bought smartphone apps in the past, plenty actually (former Crackberry user). The thing that I love about the Android platform is that there's so many choices for anything you can think of in terms of everyday use and the free versions are actually good and well maintained.

With that all said and done, what are some apps for the Motorola Droid that you feel are worth my money? So far I've considered a few...

1. Beautiful Widgets (Love the clock look + it has weather which I like and toggle buttons for wi-fi/gps/etc)
2. Abduction (free version is fantastic so just to support the developer I'm considering getting the paid version)
3. GDE/Dxtop, haven't decided which I want, but I will be trying them out individually before I decide on a purchase, the moto droid forum seems pretty split on which is better/more stable.

Motorola Droid :: Rooting With Macbook - Worth The Warranty Void?

Apr 18, 2010

Ok. First things first, I am simply in love with my Droid. I learn new things everyday. For example, yesterday i took a picture on a trip, and on the ride home, went to look at the picture in my gallery, and under the picture it read Dayton, Ohio. It knew where I took the picture!

Anyways enough of my droid love, i've got some questions for you droid gurus.

1. I want to root my phone so badly. Im afraid of it bricking though. But the thing is, ive done a lot of research, and it seems bricking hardly ever happens. I want to overclock and i really want some kick ass ROMS! Should i do on pc or my pro?

2. My screen, when closed, when you tap on the screen near the lower left corner, the screen taps. Like the screen is loose. I wanna take it to verizon. But i wanna root. But i want my warranty still usable.
