HTC Eris :: PB00IMG Zip Loading

Jun 18, 2010

Rooting process and decided to try it, but I've run into some trouble while flashing PB00IMG.zip.

I put it on my SD card and put the phone into HBOOT. It went through and found it, and then told me to press volume up to continue with the update. Then it went through the same thing, only now it is taking forever to finish loading. I know that it's a large file, but it's been almost an hour and the blue bar is only about 2/3 full. What should I do?

HTC Eris :: PB00IMG zip loading

HTC Eris :: Stuck After Flashing PB00IMG.zip

Apr 29, 2010

I have a Droid Eris that I'm trying to flash from 1.5 to the latest rooted ROM 2.1. My first attempt, I copied PB00IMG.zip to the SD card, disconnected the phone, and flashed the firmware while disconnected from the PC. I think that prevented me from gaining root access, because I cannot remount the system directory using the adb commands (gives me access denied). I'm trying now to flash the ROM while still having the phone connected to the PC, but I'm not having much luck, as I am still being denied access.

PB00IMG.zip worked WONDERFULLY on my phone.

HTC Eris :: Visual - PB00IMG.ZIP Update Method

May 8, 2010

My purpose behind this "a picture is worth 1000 words" thread is twofold:

1) For newbs that experience some trouble(s) getting the inital stages of "getting root" to happen correctly, it is helpful for them to know what things should look like when everything goes the way it should. That makes it much easier to recognize it when something goes wrong.

2) Make it very clear when to do the "battery pull" if you are interested in only installing the S-OFF bootloader (and nothing else) using Toastcfh's "battery pull trick".

In the first image below, the Eris has been restarted by simultaneously pressing the Vol-down and End (power) buttons, and a PB00IMG.ZIP file has been placed in the root folder of the SD card:

If the "PB00IMG.ZIP" file was not found on the SD card, the list of files shown above would flash across the screen and disappear very quickly - less than one second.

If this is what you experience, there are a couple of possible reasons why this might have occurred:

There is no file named PB00IMG.ZIP in the root folder of the SD card
You put the file there, but misspelled the name
The SD Card needs to be re-formatted **
The SD card is "questionable" - replace with a "beter" card **

** I never experienced these problems with the Verizon-supplied SD card, but other folks have reported that this solved a problem where they were sure the file was present in the root folder, but apparently was not recognized.

The important thing to point out here is that the PB00IMG.ZIP files are large - as much as 100 MB. Merely reading the file to compute a checksum or crypto signature from a flash device takes many tens of seconds: if the file is found by the phone, it will spend some time chewing on it. If you see the above list of files (in green) flash by and nothing happens, then it is absolutely clear that the phone did not "find" the file - for whatever reason.

In the image above, we see that the phone is reading the file, as indicated by the blue progress bar in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. This process takes a fair amount of time - perhaps as much as a full minute.

Note that the HTC crypto signature is over the whole zip file (excluding the first 256 bytes); at this point, the phone is simply checking that the .zip file has the correct crypto signature - it is not even unpacking the zip file (yet)

In the next image, the phone is beginning to unpack the zip file into separate components: the crypto sig check has succeeded, and the phone says nothing exceptional, other than "Checking"

In the next image below, the phone presents a list of images that are in the PB00IMG.ZIP file. The list shown only tells you what the function of the image file is, but does not display the exact file name in the .zip file. (Unpack the PB00IMG.ZIP yourself on your PC if you are curious).

The phone also asks you if you "Do you want to start update?".

NOTE: This point in time is extremely critical if you are going to do the battery pull method!

Note that the second item in the list, (#2) is listed as "BOOTLOADER". What will happen if you choose to perform the update, is that the new bootloader from the PB00IMG.ZIP file will be flashed right away. This sort of makes sense: it is the new bootloader that is responsible for installing all the other new images in the PB00IMG.ZIP file.

The bootloader is quite small - about 512k bytes - so it flashes onto the phone very quickly. As soon as this finishes (less than one second after you start the update), the phone screen will go dark, indicating that a reboot is in progress.

IF YOU INTEND TO USE THE BATTERY PULL METHOD, YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THIS MOMENT, WITH THE COVER ALREADY OFF THE PHONE - YOU'LL HAVE 3-4 SECONDS BEFORE THE PHONE REBOOTS AND BEGINS TO CONTINUE WITH THE REST OF THE ROM FLASHING. YOU CAN PULL THE BATTERY AS SOON AS YOU SEE THE SCREEN GO DARK. (The remaining steps shown below will not occur if you pull the battery.)

Toastcfh on XDA was the first to suggest this method; it is especially useful if you want to create a backup of your "factory" 1.5 system.

The photo images used for this documentation were taken from a manual upgrade of 1.16.605.1 to 1.17.605.1 (MR1 to MR2 update on Cupcake). Both of those updates use the exact same (S-ON) bootloader, so in the pictures which follow, we won't notice a difference in version numbers or appearance of "S-OFF" at the top of the screen. But if we were doing the "root" PB00IMG.ZIP upgrade, we would see the new version number and also "S-OFF", as the new bootloader would be "live" at this point.

In the image below, (following the reboot) we see what appears to be a complete repeat of what we saw at the beginning of the process: it appears as if the .zip file is being unpacked all over again, complete with the blue progress bar showing in the upper right hand corner of the screen:

Again, we see the "Checking" message (below). But rest assured, the update process has been launched, and will continue without prompting until the end. Don't let the fact that you are seeing a repeat of these same screens you saw earlier throw you - that is normal. And again, since the file involved is large - 100 MB - it takes a little while for the phone to chug through these steps.

Now the updater lists the (functional) contents of the PB00IMG.ZIP file, and starts the update process without stopping to ask permission. Note that the bootloader is no longer mentioned (in item #2, or anywhere): it was already installed!

When the flash memory is being written, the progress bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen will display in red (as shown below)

If the updater is merely unpacking an image file (within the .zip file), the progress bar will show up in a black color as shown below. (This will be most apparent for large images such as the "system" image)

When the update is complete, the system will pause and ask you if you want to reboot. (In the case of the root PBOOIMG.ZIP update, the new S-OFF bootloader is up and running at this point, so if you wanted to toggle it in to fastboot mode and flash Amon_RA's recovery image, you could do that.

HTC Eris :: Boot Loop With No PB00IMG.zip File

Sep 20, 2010

My Droid Eris started a boot loop about 2 days ago (the usual complaint - the skateboarding droids, the htc logo, then verizon and htc endless loop). I went to do a soft reset, removed the battery, did a hard reset, nothing works - but here's the kicker - when it loads the fastboot/recovery/clear storage/simlock screen, it says that my file PB00IMG.zip is the wrong image and jumps off the screen within 2 seconds as it loads. I cannot get my computer to mount either - it does not always recognize it, and when it does, it will not let me in to the SD card to overwrite another one. Periodically, it even gives me a lovely phone with red triangle and an exclamation point.

If I had to guess, I'm assuming that that file is the core to me booting the OS (which is still the stock OS at this point)...but somehow it is not working. Or maybe its more than just that...I'm not really sure what to go into next - I know more about playing with registry errors on a desktop than phone software - but I'm willing to tinker and learn. I'm open to any ideas since I have a backup phone temporarily while I make it the 7 days to my next upgrade, but would really like to get this one working if I can. I can't send it in to verizon, since they are saying that it is "water damaged" (even though it has never touched water!) and want to charge me 90 dollars for a refurbished one.

HTC Droid Eris :: Task Killer Pro - Loading

Jul 25, 2010

my eris is slow....i've got task killer pro and use it often...texting just one person takes forever..to the point where i'd much rather hook up to pdanet and text from my computer....when i try to load it up..it takes a minute to load up...try to type..it takes a minute to fully load so i can start typing..which normally ends up in all caps or symbols and i have to erase and type it all over again..cause it finally caught up...then sending it..it has loading...that takes forever..then for it to finally pop up on the screen takes another long time...

My eris normally runs with 64 memory when i do task killer..thats about the average...this is like my storm all over again..without the battery pulls..

HTC Eris :: Photo Gallery / Loading Pictures Slowly

Nov 11, 2010

Today I finally upgraded to 2.2 and installed kaosfroyo. As with many other eris owners the camera app shuts out on me so I installed camera360 and I'm pretty happy with it. The only problem I have is the photo gallery and how stupid slow it is. It takes so long to load my pictures (which is pretty few) that my screen turns off after waiting. And when I go back into it, it attempts to reloads all the pictures again, just to have the screen turn off(again)! I never had this problem with 2.1 (xtrROM).

HTC Droid Eris : Recovery Image - Loading New ROMS

May 22, 2010

So I have a rooted Eris (checked positively using terminal emulator) running a 2.1v3 ROM. What I'd like to do is eventually get to the 2.1 OTA ROM. Earlier I downloaded ROM Manager which, after some searching gave me some problems other people have been having. I can't flash to the ClockworkMod recovery image as it gives me a "Error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" message. I tried reinstalling, fixing permissions etc. all with the same results. So now i'm trying to flash Amon's recovery image instead using Terminal Emulator and the command line: flash_image recovery /sdcard/file_name_here.img only to yield the message that the file could not be found or something. I'm on a mac and I saw another way on here that involves running commands from your computer to your phone using the skd. I started to do that only to run into a "permission denied" when attempting the first "adb" command line. Am I missing something? I'm trying to read and re-read as closely as I can. I'm not entirely comfortable with this whole process but I'm trying to take the time to really understand it and i'm still having difficulties.

HTC Droid Eris :: Recovery Mode / Loading Pkopaleks Cricket File Ruin?

Jul 17, 2010

I have a droid eris that's flashed to cricket & everything works except my apps. I searched around the forum & found Pkopaleks thread on how to finish the full flash to get working apps. The store I got my phone flashed at said it was impossible to get working apps because the apps are verizons (lies) & now I'm disappointed their not working. My question is that do all stores that flash phones root phones before the flash? If so will going to recovery mode and loading pkopaleks cricket file ruin what has already been done? Lastly if the store didn't have to root to flash how will I fix this problem?

This seems to be an Android standard (both the Camera app and the Camcorder app do it when first selected), but I don't see any documentation on it. I even tried looking through the source of these apps on git, but couldn't seem to find it.

Modify and rebuild the Android operating system, and flash it onto a phone.

I'm not able to find anywhere a downloadable 2.0 or 2.0.1 for the ADP2, nor any indication that it could be done. To the contrary I see all kind of discussions suggesting it's either not possible, or at least not YET possible.

May someone please explain a developer withOUT any Android specific background, what is so difficult in uplading a new version of an O/S to a device that's specifically desgined for such purpose?

Do I really need to wait for HTC?

Phone then reboots, goes to motorola screen then starts to install rom

Then it says
-assert failed: apply_patch_check (" /system/app/AdService/apk" , and alot of numbers and letters)
-Error in (location of file in sdcard)

installation aborted

I have been at this for the past few hours and its starting to annoy me, I just want 2.2 working so I can deodex it and run NexTheme.

HTC EVO 4G :: Why Incomplete Web Page Loading With 4G?

Nov 10, 2010

Has anyone else experienced this issue/problem? When on 4G network, the majority of web pages do not load completely; they stick somewhere between 50-80% loaded and never complete. Stopping and refreshing sometimes gets the page to load, or switching to 3G. This happens regardless of browser (I've used stock, Dolphin, Dolphin HD, and Firefox), and both unrooted and rooted (Myn's 2.2, 2.3). When I've run speed test, I get downloads of 9+ MB/s but it doesn't make a difference if most pages don't load.
