HTC EVO 4G :: Setting Up Service On I/O Evo With No Contract?

May 26, 2010

So I have one of the evos already and I called a sprint store to ask about activating it and what not. what I figured is since I did not get the phone subsidized from sprint then I should be able to activate it without being stuck in a 2 year contract. Well the guy I talked to told me otherwise. Does that seem right? Why should I be forced in to contract if I did not get the phone through them.

Android :: Trouble Setting Photos With Contacts Contract

Nov 3, 2009

I'm happily retrieving contact photos with the new Contacts Contract APIs and cursor.getBlob, but I'm having great trouble working out how to set a contact photo.

I believe I have the right URI (at least, it works for retrieving the photo), but it just won't work for updating or adding one.

Here's my best bet:

ByteArrayOutputStream bytes = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); bitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 90, bytes);

Uri uri = Uri.withAppendedPath( ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI, friendId ); uri = Uri.withAppendedPath( uri, ContactsContract.Contacts.Photo.CONTENT_DIRECTORY);

// eg: content://com.android.contacts/contacts/6/photo

ContentValues values = new ContentValues();

values.put(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Photo.PHOTO, bytes.toByteArray()); values.put(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Photo.MIMETYPE, ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Photo.CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE );

context.getContentResolver().insert(uri, values);

And here's my exception:

java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: Unknown uri: content://com.android.contacts/contacts/6/photo at com.android.providers.contacts.LegacyApiSupport.update (LegacyApiSupport.java:914) at com.android.providers.contacts.ContactsProvider2.updateInTransaction (ContactsProvider2.java:2924) at com.android.providers.contacts.SQLiteContentProvider.update (SQLiteContentProvider.java:139) at com.android.providers.contacts.ContactsProvider2.update (ContactsProvider2.java:1923) at android.content.ContentProvider$Transport.update (ContentProvider.java:180) at android.content.ContentProviderNative.onTransact (ContentProviderNative.java:195) at android.os.Binder.execTransact(Binder.java:287) at dalvik.system.NativeStart.run(Native Method).

Samsung Captivate :: Need AT&T Service With No Contract?

Aug 4, 2010

I am closing an AT&T family plan and changing it back to one line. AT&T obviously wants to charge me for early cancellation unless I can find someone to transfer the second line to. They said it can be ANYONE. The perk for you is that you would NEVER have to have a contract. They will send me a new sim card, which in turn I would send to you. You would be responsible for getting your own phone. Once you have that, all you need to do is call AT&T and tell them what service you want. Again, best part is no contract.It's called TOBR (Transfer of Billing Responsibility.)

Android :: Setting Priority For Service

Aug 13, 2010

Is there a standard way in Android to create an unkillable service with very high priority, assuming you have complete access to the device (as in you're building your own device on something like a beagleboard, not just installing an app)? I'm playing around with sip phone stuff, and it seems like just doing it as an app isn't going to work if you want high voice quality. (Assuming you want to be able to let the user switch away from the actual sip app and use different apps; all the sip phones I've tried have failed to maintain decent audio if you're multitasking.) Or would you just run the phonecall software outside Android in a normal Linux process and communicate with Android apps over sockets?

HTC EVO 4G :: Direct Purchase And Outside Of The Contract?

May 28, 2010

Is it possible to purchase the HTC EVO directly and outside of the contract? Right now I'm on Sprint's cheapest plan, and I don't want to upgrade to Sprint's data plan which would cost me $50 more per month. I know that a direct purchase would be more money, but assuming I have the phone for two years, it can't be $1,200 more ($50*24). I'm only going to use the web features at home or in the office, where I have WiFi anyway. If I REALLY need to use the data service here or there, it still won't cost me $50 more paying per KB. When at home or in the office, I could also use Google Voice to make all of my phone calls over WiFi if I go over my 300 minutes (which I won't). Will Sprint allow me to activate an unlocked phone on their network? Are there glaring gaps in this plan?

HTC Desire :: SIM Free Or Contract

Apr 13, 2010

I'm currently waiting for the Desire to come out on O2, but am still not sure whether this is the best thing to do, or whether I should just get it SIM free and get an O2 Simplicity SIM (I want O2 because of the data allowance and because I know the coverage is good here, unlike other networks).My issues are, if I get it on O2 will it be ruined by them, covered in O2 stuff inside and out. But, if I get it SIM free, will it be difficult to set up when I put the SIM in, for messaging/internet access/whatever. I'm not that techie minded so if it's complicated to set all this up on a SIM free phone I might struggle.

HTC EVO 4G :: How To Activate On Sprint With No Contract

Jul 1, 2010

Just in case someone else has the same dilema i had by buying thier EVO online for full price so they dindt have to get the 2 year contract. but then realizing that sprint requires a new 2 year contract with every new line you activete regardles of you bought the phone outright or not. heres how how to get around it.

1 Buy EVO 4G wherever.

2 Activated old phone with a new number on the basic Month to month 200 plan (had to be done at the Sprint store they wold not let me activate over the phone with this plan)

3 go home and upgrade plan online to 99.00 unlimited everything

4 Swap old phone with EVO under activate new phone online

5 Port your phone number from whereever you have it to Sprint replacing the new phone you just got when you avtivated the line

Thats it, it quite a few steps but atleast you wont have to worry about getting locked in to a new 2 year contract.

HTC EVO 4G : Best Place To Buy Phone Off Contract?

Jun 1, 2010

So, I've heard too many mixed things in like 50 different threads, and can't really make sense of all of them, so I thought I'd just make a new thread.

What is the best place to buy Evo off contract? Certain places like Wirefly don't sell off contract, others like Amazon apparently don't either. Places like Best buy and radio shack seem to have a higher off contract price ($549). Sprint's online store seems to be the most obvious choice, but then we get stuck with Tax (which for california is nearly 50$ dollars)

So, has anyone done their research and figured out what place will be best, and why?

Samsung Galaxy S :: Using WiFi Exclusively Without A Contract

Nov 16, 2010

I have a very basic question and I hope somebody can help me. I want to buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S phone and use it exclusive as a WiFi phone in the USA. Can I buy an unlocked phone and expected to work with WiFi without having to have an agreement with the phone companies? I don't mind paying $600+ for the phone, but it is the monthly fees from the phone companies that I would like to avoid. I am almost certain that this would work, but I just wanted to ask that question before I actually buy the phone. I want to make sure that the phone companies and/or Samsung have not done something that would prevent me from doing this without a contract.

Android :: Sign A Contract With T-mobile For A G2 With Verizon?

Nov 25, 2010

I like both phones a lot. Each has something that it can do better than the other. Now I'm just kinda picking by the carrier. With Verizon, I will most likely have better coverage everywhere I go, which is important because my dad is a truck driver. I will be paying $180 for for 2 lines with 1500 mins, web on both phones, and unlimited texts I will be stuck on 3G, not 4g. i heard that verizon's 3G is still pretty fast though. With T-mobile I will prob have worse coverage everywhere I go. Paying for 3000 mins, unlimited texts, web on both phones, and will be getting DOUBLE the amount of minutes from Verizon AND 30 BUCKS CHEAPER. I will also have access to t-Mobile's "4g", which isn't too good, but will get better over time. So at first glance, it's obvious I should go with tmobile, but because my dad travels all over the place, I don't think he'll always have coverage compared to Verizon. I am located in North New Jersey and my dad usually goes to PA, NY, VA, ML, and CT. So which carrier is best for coverage in the North East?

Android :: Contract For Constructing SlidingDrawer Widget?

Mar 11, 2010

I tried to construct SlidingDrawer widget programmatically, but had no luck. The JavaDoc says the constructor needs "AttributeSet attrs" parameter, which is "a specified set of attributes defined in XML".
I provided my own implementation of AttributeSet interface, with all the attributes mentioned in JavaDoc, but got a weird ClassCastException - it seems that it assumes the attrs parameter is of type TypedArray, which seems to be impossible to use as base class (constructor hidden). Is there a way to construct SlidingDrawer programmatically and what is the correct contract to use it ? It is no way clear from the documentation.

Android :: Application Developer Wanted For Contract Work

Mar 9, 2009

We am looking for a expert Android developer for Android application development. You must have documented experience in following areas:

- UI development - file handling - multimedia decoding - authentication

We already have our application running on other devices and can provide you with functioning models. We will provide you with a well documented API for you to interface to our servers. The UI will change a little compared to what we have now. You will have access to an experienced graphics designer for any necessary design changes.

We expect that you will sign an NDA and a contract with us. Compensation will be $20,000.00. Payment will occur as we launch the application. It will be based on a revenue share model where you will get 30% of the revenues up to a max of $20,000.00. We estimate you will reach the $20,000.00 mark within 2 months of application launch date. We are only looking for expert developers and you should be able to initiate the work within the next couple weeks. If succesful, we would be interested in extending additional work as the application evolves.

Android :: Contacts Contract / Building Across Multiple SDK Versions

Jan 11, 2010

I need my app to run on all Android versions, but the Contacts API changed in 2.0. In SDK 1.6 and earlier I use android.provider.Contacts to query the contacts DB, but this does not work in 2.0 Instead, for 2.0 I use android.provider.ContactsContract. This presents a problem: when I have code for ContactsContract, my app will not build for 1.6 and earlier. Do I need to have two separate versions of my app (one for <= 1.6 and one for 2.0 and later) or is there a way to avoid doing this?
