HTC EVO 4G :: Deleting System Update Files Without Removing Updates
Jul 25, 2010
I have an unrooted Evo and I'm really low on internal space and don't want to root...if I could delete the system update files like "com.htc 2.1-update 1" and "Android System 2.1-update1", that would help to free up about 23mb of space...can I uninstall them or would that revert the system to the pre-updated state?

I just rooted my stock 2.1 Droid and am playing with all things I now have access to. I realize I can now delete just about anything in the /system folder. I have already removed a few stock apps (like the Visual Voicemail). I suppose I could also remove unused wallpapers, sounds, etc., but would freeing up this space offer any benefit?

I have just discovered this feature called "Integrate system app updates into ROM" in the TitaniumBackup application and i am starting to use it in order to free some space of the internal memory of the phone. Everything's ok for now.
I was just wondering ... if, after doing such process, i can still do OTA updates (i have a sony xperia mini pro sj17i device)?

For some reason my Hero won't perform any System Updates. When I click on any of the top 3 update options (Firmware, Profile, or PRL) the option turns green while my finger is on it but doesn't respond. This happened in the weeks before the 2.1 update also, but I just stuck it out, and after the 2.1 update it worked again - until recently. Now no updates can be requested. No root. Any ideas?

I wrote an app that downloads web sites and all their assets (images/stylesheets) to "disk" and therefore stores lots of small files on the SD card.
Sometimes it fails to delete large amounts of files and afterward the file system is r/o. To analyze that behavior I tried to do the removal of the files by hand and then go from there. But that already failed.
localhost:~ mkamp$ adb -d shell mount [.. some mounts ..] /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 --> R/W
Last login: Wed Mar 18 19:41:49 on ttys005 localhost:~ mkamp$ adb -d shell rm /sdcard/newsrob/a* [.. minutes of silent deletes ..] rm failed for /sdcard/newsrob/a2aade03616c28b30_113.png, Read-only file system localhost:~ mkamp$
localhost:~ mkamp$ adb -d shell mount [.. some mounts ..] /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /sdcard vfat ro,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 --> R/O now
The log contained nothing but the usual gc output and random WiFi status changed mumbo jumbo.
Anybody else seeing this behavior?
There were 6.500 files in that directory. Might that be the problem? I don't access the files with queries, I always have the exact name.

How do you go about checking what is stored on your phones memory and deleting content? For example I used dropbox and downloaded a 7mb photo onto my phone. Can't find it in the photos app or anywhere else. Going into SD & phone storage under settings doesn't do anything. It says I have 70mb available space under phone storage but you can't click on that to get any further info. Same goes for the SD card options.

I published an application that stores data in a local database.
Now I have to publish an update to this application to fix some little bugs, but I am afraid that downloading and installing the update will delate the local database associated with the previous version.
I would like to know how the update system works. Will installing an update completely delete all the apk, files, databases associeted with the previous version?
If so, how can I avoid this in my code?

I've been running CM nightlies as long as they've been available for my device (Samsung Captivate). After each flash though, I have to go in through Titanium Backup and uninstall a number of system apps (mail, exchange services, music, DSP manager, news & weather, dev tools) that I do not use for various reasons. I know the ROM runs fine without these elements, as I've been removing them for years now. Manually removing them wasn't such an issue until my phone received a TWRP recovery, which effectively gets me much closer to a "one-click" nightly update making the manual cleanup more of a burden to my lazy lifestyle.
I'd like to create a CWM flashable zip that contains only an update script that removes the system apk's that I specify. Using TWRP I'd like to be able to flash the update, the kernel, and my custom "cleanup" zip in that order. I know the path to all the subject apks, but I know little about scripting or creating CWM zips. my way around a bash script, but I'm not even sure if that's relevant.

I am an Android app developer, and I have purchased a Nexus One device which I use to continuously test my developed Android applications.
Background: ----------------- One of the applications I developed uses a native shared library (e.g. myNativeLib.so). Only my application loads & uses this native library. I had developed this app before Android NDK came out. I pack my native library into my apk's 'assets' folder, and during my application start- up, I extract this native library from my package's assets folder to my app private directory (i.e. <assets> -> /data/data/<myappprocess>/ myNativeLib.so). Then I use System.load() API in my application to dynamically load this native library.
Problem: ------------ This application was developed during Android 1.5 (i.e. cupcake) days {I didn't have the Nexus One then}. The above procedure has been working without any problems right from Android 1.5 to Android 2.2 (i.e. Froyo). I have also tested the same on my Nexus One for Android 2.1 (i.e. Eclair) and Android 2.2.
The problem began the moment I recently upgraded my Nexus One to Android 2.2.1 via the FRG83 system update. Now, whenever I try to load my native library, I get the following error:
D/dalvikvm( 3653): Trying to load lib /data/data/<myappprocess>/ <mynativelib>.so <some address> I/dalvikvm( 3653): Unable to dlopen(/data/data/<myappprocess>/ <mynativelib>.so): Cannot load library: link_image[1995]: failed to link <mynativelib>.so
What I have Tried: -------------------------- 1. I tried my application using Android 2.2 SDK (emulator)...it works, no issues. 2. I checked out the latest froyo & android2.2.1 source code from Android open-source, built & tested my application + native lib using the latest froyo source...it built & ran, no issues. This should've taken care of any changes in the native code dependencies between Android 2.2 & Android 2.2.1 3. I even checked Android 2.2.1 source code for dalvik (java System & Runtime classes) + bionic (linker & dlopen sources) between Android 2.2 & Android 2.2.1 (using source checked out from Android open-source), but couldn't find anything consequential 4. I am unable to return my Nexus One to Android 2.2.

So I was going to update to Froyo manually when I noticed that my 'check for system updates' is disabled in the about phone menu. I can only think of two reasons:
1. I'm rooted (doesn't seem likely)
2. I'm roaming but still on 3g (This would be annoying as I have to drive 20 miles to verizon towers)Any ideas? On a separate note maybe this is an advantage.I'm new to the Android platform and have heard of issues upgrading to 2.2. Maybe I should just wait until Moto puts out the patch?

I have a galaxy samsung s3 and rooted it to download custom roms, etc. Which is all new to me fyi. Anyway, haven't decided on a rom yet, so still got the stock one going. When i get a notice to download a system update, and try to do it, it reboots to twrp recovery that i installed. Not sure what to do at this point or should i just not worry about the updates. Also, my phone doesn't recognize a usb connection when i hook it to my computer.

I have a game the allows the user to save the game in a file. I have a new update coming out the will make the previous saved games not work. Is the any way to delete all the files that my program created?
I have been serializing the games and saving them like this:
ObjectOutputStream os = new ObjectOutputStream(openFileOutput(gameName + ".sav", 0)); os.writeObject(gameObject);
I know I can go through the list of games and do something like this
for(GameName name : gameList) { deleteFile(name + ".sav");
