HTC EVO 4G : Way To Manage Time Without Signal?
Aug 11, 2010
So I installed froyo like everyone else and started to experience bad battery life. Just like everyone else I did a hard reset and did away with task killers, etc.... I checked to make sure Facebook update was uninstalled and then did the auto CDMA prl check. Problem is that I am still experiencing bad battery life....6-7 hrs max on light usage. I noticed that my "time without signal" was ticking up even though I have clear signal and so forth.

All this talk about 3G/4G speeds, hotspot, etc.... I was thinking just how much time everyone spends away from a WiFi connection they can use? My normal day consists of getting up, going to work, and coming home. I spend maybe 2-2.5 hours away from the house while driving to/from work, picking/dropping off kids, going to the grocery store, etc.So usually when I want to access something on my phone, I will be around a WiFi signal I can use (Home or Office).I would think with WiFi on the EVO, thats where most of my data usage is going to be.
When using android apps, they use WiFi (if available) correct?

I seem to have a poor signal alot of the time. 1 or 2 bars is not unusual in places my old phone used to have full signal strength. It went on roaming for some reason in the shopping centre today. It is always on H or nothing. My old phone used to drop onto edge and GPRS if it didn't get a H signal. And what about 3G? An all singing all dancing phone is no good if it cant perform its main function.

I have had the LG Ally for about a week and was expecting my battery to not last more than a day. When it wouldn't last for more than a few hours with light use I figured there must be something wrong. I have an app killer and make sure only the programs I need are running. The standby time is the problem. It is always taking up at least 65% followed by display which takes up less than 30%. When clicking on standby time, the time without signal is ALWAYS 100%. Doing research I haven't heard of anyone having 100% all the time. Things I have tried so far are airplane mode, turning the phone on/off, and dialing *#*#4636#*#* to change the radio thing multiple times. Nothing will take it below 100%. Strange thing is that I can still receive calls, texts, and use the internet. It seems unlikely that after only a week of owning the phone that I would already have to do a reset. Could there be a new bug different from the 50% TWS bug? Please let me know if anyone has had this problem and/or knows how to fix it.

I've noticed within the past month or two my Eris has been having a hard time searching for a gps signal. I'm on the Leak v.3. Sometimes it takes a matter of a min to lock on other times much longer, and this past weekend I had an indecent where it never found the signal for about a 1/2hr or more.

I want to reach out to others here before I take my Moment back to Best Buy to exchange it for another Moment.
My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.
It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.
At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.
So, the my questions are...
Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?
Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?
Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?
Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?

I just downloaded a free program called "TimeSignal." All the program does is run in the background and cause your phone to briefly vibrate on the hour, perfect for when I am in a loud place and have the phone in my pocket. It's great for when you get involved in something (like right now when I am playing on the computer) and completely lose track of time. You set set the program's hours of operation and it has a few other settings that I haven't played with. The program seems to have no problems running on my Droid.

Edit: Well, it looks like I found what the problem was. Apparently the time without signal being stuck at 50% is a known android bug that a lot of phones have. Tried the fix posted at the bottom of this thread FWIW: New LG Ally has 50% Time Without Signal Bug
and it seems to be working for me, phones been on for 10 minutes and my time without signal is reporting at 0%
Original Post. Am I just not understanding what it means? I looked at the cell standby information about an hour ago, and I panicked when I saw that it said the phone had been on for 1d 5 hours since I turned it on, and the time without signal was 50%.
I rebooted the phone to get a fresh reading tomorrow before running back to the at&t store to get my money back, and after the phone had been on for a few minutes I went to check the info again, and saw that the phone had been on for 8 minutes, and the time without signal was 50%. Now service isn't amazing in my house but I generally get 3 bars at my desk, with it fluctuating between 2-4. If I pick it up and hold it, it'll drop to 1-2, sometimes losing signal completely very briefly (thank you antenna design). But, the phone had been sitting on my desk untouched, so it seemed really strange to me that it would have been without service 4 minutes out of the 8 it had been on.
Went into my display settings and set the display to stay on for 30 minutes, and have been sitting in the phone status screen now watching the bars (going between 3-4 now for the time I've been watching it) and the signal strength (going between -97 dBm 8 asu to -81 dBm 16 asu). I haven't been sitting here staring at it, but I've been glancing at it often enough that I feel confident in saying that the phone has not lost signal in the last hour. However I can go into the cell standby details screen right now, and it's reporting the Time on as 1 hour 9 minutes, and time without signal.....50%. Am I missing something, is it trying to say that it's been without signal for 30 minutes of the last hour, or am I misunderstanding what "time without signal" means (though it seems pretty straightforward).
Anyone else noticing this on their phone?

I can get a few minutes of 4G signal at my home per day, but when it drops out and 3G takes over, the signal will flatline and boot me offline. My 3G speeds are usually around 56-150Kbps or less, and my 4G speeds are around 2.5 Mbps What would cause this ? According to WiMax location sites online, my nearest 4G tower is .52 mile away. I would think that if I actually get 4G signal, then 3G would be constant. Turning off 4G doesn't help either. Is there some setting that I could have turned off that would cause this ? Running stock EVO on 2.2 all the latest updates

My droid x signal pretty much always between -92dBm and -87dBm with 1-3 3g bars. My former droid eris would get -92dBm with 1 bar and also drain incredibly fast.
On the droid x, if I go into google maps, the circle of the cell tower appears and the place I live at is half way within the edge of the circle and the other half is outside of the circle. I always seem to be connected to this tower. Bad luck I guess that I'm on the outskirts of the circle.
Does anyone know how cell towers are distributed? Do they overlap sometimes?
I run pandora with the screen off for a half hour with the screen off and my battery is down to 70%. I have about 15% screen brightness and battery saving mode on.
yesterday, I was on meebo for an hour and 45 minutes and it was down to 60% from a full charge.

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths. I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths. To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback. It works, but not very well. It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers. I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better. The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution. So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths? It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell. Am I missing something here?I would also like to directly call a method from the telephony manager to get current cell strength, as opposed to a listener, if possible. If anyone knows how, please let me know.

My calls to getFromLocationName() always fail the "first" time I start my app. I catch the IOException which has reason:
Unable to parse response from server
Then I make a second call and it succeeds. Once things are "awake" all future calls to getFromLocationName() succeed, it's just that first one, and there is a ton of latency.
I haven't run this on a device yet, just in the emulator. This seems like a network problem, but it is so reproducible I'm thinking I'm not initializing something properly. I'm using Android SDK 1.1.

I just got the magic yesterday and so far I'm loving it. Just have a couple questions about texting. When I receive a text it usually tells me the time in eastern time though I'm pacific. However, my sent messages come up with the right time. This makes it so that threaded sms is kind of useless. Everything is all out of whack. Also, every once in a while it just won't even give me a time and there has been once or twice(after fiddling with it for a bit) that it gave me the right time but it just went back to the wrong time right after. Could this be a problem with the phone or is it rogers' fault? I'm assuming it's getting the time from the network and they have it wrong(meaning I can't fix it) but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.
Also, is there any way to make it vibrate when I receive a text? I feel dumb for asking this as it seems like it should be something really obvious but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I recently received an LG optimus f3 with android 4.1.2.
After activating the phone, it displayed the correct date and time for my time zone, so I didn't mess around with settings to reset the time, as I would with any other device.
However, I've noticed that the time changes to exactly an hour ahead, before changing itself back several minutes later.
I went to settings > date and time, but 24 hour time and selecting a date format are the only options listed.
I prefer to leave mobile data off when I am at home and can use the wi-fi. Is it necessary to have mobile data turned on, so the phone can receive the time from a cell tower, or is there a way I can set an internal clock?

When i'm connected to my router at home via wifi, the connection randomly drops from time to time. My laptop and TV is fine which are both running via the internet. The setting is set to stay connected always, even when the screen goes black.
Does anyone have a resolution for this? Perhaps static IP? if this is the answer, what should the settings be?

at the moment I am thinking about a new app and need some information to decide whether to develop on Android or an alternative OS. I am particularly interested in "time to first screen", "boot-up time", "time to first Audio" and "app-start" (can be any from the android market or even one of the pre-installed ones) time? Does anyone know a source or perhaps measured those numbers?

I want to develop a game, so I need to know elapsed time at lots places in my game. For example, to measuring FPS. I see there is some example use "System.currentTimeMillis" to measure elapsed time. But I see the warning on document: http://developer.android.com/intl/zh-TW/reference/java/lang/System.ht... "This method shouldn't be used for measuring timeouts or other elapsed time measurements, as changing the system time can affect the results." So, if this method should not be used for measuring elapsed time, then what will be suitable?

I was having the waketime/sleeptime problem that many, many folks have reported and my battery life was obviously crap...and took forever to charge as has also been noted. I had already turned off all the auto-update stuff that I did when I first got the phone. Then I read the many posts abut Facebook app being the problem, but when I tried that it turned out that I was still running the old version 1.2, so apparently that wasnt causing it on my Evo.
Not really wanting to do a factory reset, I thought I'd check for other app updates in case one of the other apps had 2.2 bug fixes. Ran a sync thru the AppBrain app, and it found three updates that I hadnt been notified of:
Once those updates were completed, my EVO immediately starting going to sleep as it used to. I watched it for a few hours after the update and it continued to show realistic numbers for wake vs. sleep. My battery was almost depleted at this point, so I powered it off, and did the battery pull for good measure before powering back on and plugging in to charge during the night. This was all late Thursday night. All day Friday my battery performed VERY well...much better than even during 2.1. I had it on charge most of the day while listening to Pandora at my desk. I unplugged it to go home and now checking it this morning, it's now been off charge for 14h 39m, show wake time of 33:44 vs. sleep time of 15:28, and shows 80% battery remaining! This whole scenario makes me wonder if one of those three apps had a similar bug to Facebook. If you have those...you might want to take a closer look.
