HTC EVO 4G : Unique Text Notification For Each Contact
Jun 13, 2010
It's easy enough to give each contact a unique ringtone when they call you. Is there a way to do that with text messages? I want a different sound to play depending on who is texting me.

So I have a very weird yet unique case with my stock text messaging app. Just this past weekend I started noticing that one of my contacts text messages were consistently showing up 3 minutes earlier from my text to them. So every time I send a text their response shows up above it which is very annoying. This case is only occurring for this contact, everyone else shows up just fine.
Now, this is what I have determined so far...
1) It's only happening when I receive a text from someone using a DROID on Verizon. I had a another friend who I had not recently text with sent me a text message to test my theory. The issue still occurs...
2) I had my sister who is on Verizon text me on her Blackberry Tour and the timing of her text shows up correctly. So it can't be the network right?
3) 3rd party apps (Handcent/ChompSMS) don't have this issue at all, the timing is perfect for everyone so my guess is that there is something wrong with the stock messaging app?
I have a whole bunch of other text from other contacts and I don't have this issue, it's just happening to the one contact that I have...actually, now two, which both have a DROID.
I may have to commit to using Handcent but I've been testing out the stock messaging app lately to evaluate the wake time after the firmware update and just noticed this problem occurring this past weekend only. I was using the stock messaging app even before this weekend and didn't notice this problem.

I'm looking for an app that can set a separate ringtone and volume for a SMS I get from a specific number . I know some apps that can assign a specific notification sound per contact , but none of those can set a separate volume level .

I woke up to find I had received a text message on my Galaxy S. So, I looked in the notification bar and it said the message was from my brother. I opened my 'Messages' inbox by clicking the Messages icon. At the top of the screen it showed that the message was from my mate Doug, not my brother. So, I opened the actual message by selecting it from my message inbox and it showed that it was actually from my mate Charlie

I'm using Hangouts for my SMS messages. Until recently when I received a message and swiped down on the notification bar I would see the contact's picture next to the text message. I have saved contact pictures for most of my gmail contacts (had to since google won't pull in Facebook picture but that's another gripe). Recently however, the contact picture does not display in the notification area when I get an SMS. It just show a grey/black/white image where the contact picture should be. The contact picture still appears in the actual text message and in my list of text messages but not in the notification area. I have a Nexus 5 which I believe is up to date on all updates.

Sometimes when I receive messages it makes the notification sound and will show message in notification bar but the text of the message will not appear in the text thread. Used to happen every once in a while, now doing it multiple times a day. I use Handcent but I doubt that is the problem because the messages dont show up in the regular messaging either. Just want to see if i am alone with this problem.

I have 20 sec mp3's that I can assign to individual contacts for their ringtone. I also have 07 sec mp3's that I want to assign to their notification sound such as incoming texts. How can I do that? Do I need a 3rd party app?

Im trying to get the unique tag id through the nexus. Im using
Tag myTag = (Tag) intent.getParcelableExtra(NfcAdapter.EXTRA_TAG);
and setTitle(myTag.getId());
but instead of getting a unique constant ID the id keeps changing, I want the ID on the tag itself.

I've searched everywhere, and the threads that I find, on multiple sites, people ask this question and are given the obvious answer but yet doesnt answer the question. I know how to make a tone for all text messages. I want to be able to give each person their own text tone like I was able to on my Palm Centro. Is there an app for this?

This seems to be a bit of a vexed issue: see
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...
Like the person who started that thread, I need to get a unique ID for a device, without using scary permissions for TelephonyManager. I've tried
id = android.provider.Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(), android.provider.Settings.Secure.ANDROID_ID);
but that just produces "android_id" on my phone. I'm using a Nexus One and Android 2.1.

Is there a unique ID that is given to Android handests that is available through the SDK?
I want to provide a web-service with actions that can only be performed once per resource per user. Maybe there is a different way to go about this. Any ideas?

What it is the best way to do this?

I'm looking for a way to identify a phone by a unique string or number. That is, get a phone to give out a code which I can say is unique to that specific phone. The IMEI or IMSI would normally do (sim- specific rather than phone-specific is ok), but they require extra security privileges and I would like to avoid that. Is there any other way?

I have 2 questions though.
1 - how do I change the alert notification for my calendar? Originally it was just the standard alert. When I view the settings there was the option to use the standard droid alert of use a ringtone. So, playing around I cheeked use a ring tone. It brought me to a directory(?) or folder with 4 songs that I had downloaded using railio(sp) ringtones. Now that's the only place I can get to for ALL alerts and ringtones. Even for my contacts it goes to the 4 songs I downloaded from railio ringtones and I can't navigate anywhere else.
I have gone into manage applications and uninstalled the ringtone program, but still can't get out of that spot for my alerts and ringtones. It's driving me crazy!
2 - My contacts have multiple entries for one person.
How can I delete the multiple entries for a contact? When I edit the contact information for a person I see 3 - 5 duplicate entries for one contact. When I first got my droid I synced with 2 google accounts - I didn't know what I was doing --- so, the information under one contact is repeated many times.

Somehow I changed the settings on my phone so that the predictive text has started prioritizing the names in my contact info when auto completing the text. For example, if I type "thr" it won't suggest "the" but "Theo". I recall changing a setting somewhere in the phone that enabled this, but now I want to turn it off and have no idea where this setting was buried away.

Did a bunch of searching but can't seem to find a solution. A friend texts and asks me if I have so-and-so's number. On the blackberry, I would go to my contacts, shift-roll to select the phone number, and paste it into a new text message. I'm looking for the most efficient way to do this on my droid x. I have found the copy command in different places (sometimes via the menu key and other times via a hold click) but I don't see where I can select specific text. I know there is a feature to send an id card or something like that, but those don't seem to work with a lot of phones.

I must be missing something really obvious, but can someone tell me how I can send a text message to more than one contact in Handcent please? If I manage to do this, will all the recipients of that message be able to jointly read what everyone says like an email or facebook message? Maybe I'm asking too much?

Is it possible to determine the unique bluetooth MAC address for an iPhone and an Android (and to a lesser extent, other smartphones) from within an app on said device? Is my assumption that the MAC address is universally unique correct? A general yes or no would be helpful. Example code in the case of an iPhone or an Android would be extremely helpful.
