HTC EVO 4G :: Shattered Screen Horror Stories
Oct 13, 2010
Well last night I went to see Band Of Horse, it was a great concert btw. Upon leaving I got challenged to a "heel-click" off by my girlfriend. Not wanting to ceed victory I gave it my best and my phone flew out of my pocket and cracked on the sidewalk. Im not too upset I have insurance via sprint (assurant or something like that)...they seem really nice, they said they would send me a new Evo overnight all I had to do was pay my deductible (100). Unfortuantely this morning I cut my hand pretty badly picking up the phone which I thought was funny...so if you shatter your screen be careful!

Have any battle/horror stories involving your Evo? I just got mine replaced on friday..and i was walking down our outside stairs yesterday, and dropped it. "luckily" it hit the bottom left corner, and indented it. Oh well, it happens.

Placed Evo on counter with thumb on side toggle switch. Screen completely shattered! Had the phone for 6 days, and was never dropped or mishandled! Deductible $100. Wondering if anybody else had a shatter with no trauma?

I just wanted to offer a little information for those who may have cracked screens.I left my EVO on my bumper a few weeks ago. I realized about an hour later I didn't have it. Someone picked it up off of the busy highway and dropped if off at my shop. It had been rolled over numerous times and the screen was completetly shattered. With the help of this site, I found instructions on changing the LCD/Glass and ebay links on where to get it. I got a great deal on ebay, $79 for the lcd/glass complete. Was brand new in the packing. Bought the tools (listed in the instructions found on this site) at the local hardware store, put the lcd/glass on, and the phone works PERFECT! I am very glad. First off I didn't have insurance, and second, this has been the first phone in a while that I have had zero issues with and really like everything about it (coming from numerous blackberries). So basically, thanks for the help, and now we know the phone can take a few cars running over it and the board, battery, back, etc. held up great. It had a best buy case (appears same as seidio innocase) and Zagg screen protector on it.I have my original phone back, no scratches, spent $79 (less than the deductible even if I had insurance), and its a done deal.

My phone is 2 months old so clearly im not due for the new every 2. I am always so cautious with my phones. Had a verizon case on. Been a verizon customer since it was Cellular One. DONT HAVE INSURANCE because its such an extra added monthly expense. We have 3 phones, pay $200/month to Verizon Wireless. Unfortuantely, as i had read, the Incredible is way delicate and it dropped maybe 18 inches and boom its history. Do you guys suggest anything to get a replacement? Do you think they will work with me if i handle the situation in any specific way?

All I can say is damn, My phone fell out of my pocket today and the screen shattered. Luckily I bought it at bestbuy and bought the warranty on it. So I took it in and gave it to them. They gave me some shitty replacement phone and mailed mine off. I have to wait 3 weeks to get my phone back! I haven't had my but only 1 week and 3 days. I love my Aria but damn is it fragile. I do have one one question, I have always wanted a Nexus One is that phone better than the aria and is there any way to put HTC sense on it? If so to both then I will probably buy one unlocked.

The screen is shattered which sucks. It's still usable but looks horrible. I have insurance on it so I have some questions as to the whole procedure i'll have to go through when I bring it to verizon.
1: Does my insurance cover if I drop it?
2: Do I have to get a new phone or can they send it in and get the screen fixed?
3: Do I have to pay for a new phone? If so will they then send me a new one and let me keep my old one so I still have a phone while I wait?
It sucks because I've never dropped it, and it was just my luck that it falls right on the screen.

So I got my Eris on Wednesday and dropped it today and did I mess it up. It feel from about waste level, I'm 5'8 so it wasn't that high. I even slid my foot out to stop a direct hit to the ground which was successful. However this didn't help at all. The entire screen shattered but the phone still works. I know I should have a case for it but in the 9 years of having a cell phone this is the first one I dropped one. I was planning on getting one but haven't had the time to go out and get one yet.
Anyways I though the Eris had the gorilla glass that was basically unbreakable. It doesn't seem like a fall from waste hight, slowed down by my foot, onto the linoleum floor at the food store would destroy the screen. The cracks start at the corner and spider web through the whole screen. Everything I've read about people dropping the phone said it never broke. I am wondering if the screen might actually be defective, probably not but I'm grasping at straws to avoid the insurance deductible. Good thing I have insurance on the phone.

Now I have dropped my Inc many times (I have the rubber case) and never had a problem. Well on Sunday I was coming home from the airport and dropped it perfectly about 3 feet directly on the screen on a rock and kablooey, it was shattered. I mean ruined to the point where you couldn't touch it without getting cut. However it actually still worked perfectly, but for obvious safety reasons I needed to get a new one. To make a long story short I got Verizon to send me a new one, and I couldn't be happier. Now they explained that I didn't receive a new one or a refurbished one, rather one that was returned immediately by someone.
It looks great, works perfectly and is running faster and smoother than my old one did. This is even after I did a backup from AppBrain to re-download over 130 apps. My only sadness is that I lost all my levels on Angry birds, and that I had to reset up my phone with all the little personalizations that I had before. Has anyone else had a similar experience with their replacement. My old phone (one that had received the update) It was constantly bogged down, and got better once I did a factory reset, however it still wasn't as smooth as my new one.

So how few options do I have? I dropped my incredible on the garage floor and it hit in the corner and shattered. It still works fine, but I had to put some tape below the screed near the optical sensor to cover the sharpness from the cracks where the screen protector doesn't cover.
Anyhow, I did not get insurance as I'd never used it in the 15 years I owned a cell phone... murphy's law of course. I went to a Verizon store and they gave me a phone number of a 3rd party repair guy. He's closed for the day so I started to Google stuff and it seems that I am up the creek. The screens are the reason they are not making these as fast as they'd like so I assume there are none available. I cannot find any info on repairing them... not looking good is it?

I have shattered the screen of my AT&T Galaxy S2. It will power up but screen is completely black. I cant upgrade until Oct and will reluctantly use my wife's old Iphone 3g. All my contacts were on phone and backup on Gmail. Any way to transfer my 700 plus contacts to an I phone without being able to use screen on my Galaxy?

So i think i might have the first shattered Incredible screen. I dropped it from two feet onto the metal camera protruding part. It hit with very little force. You can barely even see the mark from falling. So i pick it up and notice the entire screen is shattered when the screen was face up, the screen didn't even hit the ground! I can't believe how thin the Incredible screen is, it literally crumbled jut from the force of a light fall. I'm unimpressed in the build quality of the glass. I want to contact HTC about this and see if they can help me out, it seems like a manufacturing defect, maybe a weak screen? I need to find the biggest case that i can find for my replacement, one that could absorb a fall if it falls on the back part. I am thinking maybe a pillow as a case? That might help. Now im out ANOTHER 100 bucks to make an insurance claim on this. I highly recommend people keeping the insurance, the screen blows up even if it is not directly the part that hits if it is dropped.

I've been using the new HTC News app that came with 2.2. There is no settings option to set a limit on the number of stories. Refreshing the stories just keeps adding them on, but it appears you have to erase them manually, which seems pretty bad given there are over 200 stories and growing on mine right now. Have I got this right?

Like the rest we are waiting for Epic release. Some of us are stuck with our phones. Some can upgrades. But for those that want to upgrade to the Epic are you paying out of pocket? Are you able to upgrade now? Is your upgrade in October like many of or September? What will you do? Has Sprint ever given you an early upgrade and if so by how far from your actual upgrade date?

Just wanted go give a heads up to those that are using the Verizon silicone case, or other similar tight fitting cases. I had to take my case off to get to the battery, and somehow applied pressure to the phone in such a way that I shattered the camera lens. It's totally my fault, I should have been more careful and paid better attention to what I was doing. Just wanted to let you know that damage is possible if you aren't careful.

Shattered the glass on my Eris just now at a Texaco, fell out of hands and tried to catch it but ended up accelerating it into the concrete... now, I'm guessing ill haveto change the digitizer along with the glass cause i bet theyre fused together like the iPhone is... broke the glass on my iPhone last year, that was a rough little process. The iPhone is a bit of a beast to repair because of the rubber seals and stuff, is the htc hardware as tough to work on or should I just go bid on a used eris and replace the one I've got? Digitizer still works, lcd is good, I'm typing on it right now, glass i in real bad shape though, ... suggestions ?

Trip this weekend to a competition my son was involved in...we had to drive about 150 miles to another city, navigate between four different locations while up there, and then get back home the next day. The previous year when we'd gone to this event we had gotten lost twice and actually missed being able to watch most of one event we were so late. So the pressure was huge to avoid a similar situation this year.I set up nav shortcuts on one of my home pages to each of the four locations in the other town the night before. So in the morning we pulled out of the garage, I tapped the icon for the first destination and off we went, faultlessly directed to our hotel.
On the way there, my wife says "I'd really like to hear some music, do you have any Elton John?" (So sue her, she's a child of the 70's. ) "Nope," says I "but I think I know where we can find some." So I tell her how to fire up Slacker on the Droid and she enters "Elton John" and a few seconds later she is rocking to the sound of "Crocodile Rock" and various other artists she likes.Nav interrupted Elton et al when necessary to provide directions.Used the shortcuts the rest of the weekend to move between the four locations w/out fault. Looked up traffic a few times to decide whether to bail on a route or not.No screams of "What street do I turn on, what street!?!" from me, and no wails of "I can't tell, I can't tell - Oh the humanity!!!" from my wife. Pure wedded bliss maintained, with Slacker providing the 70's soundtrack for the our weekend montage.

I dropped mine about 1-2 feet onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered. I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to pay the $162 to get it fixed or sell it for parts on ebay. Thing is, Samsung claims they've only had to replace the glass on 3 captivates so far, and I cannot find a single screen-damaged Captivate on ebay past or present. Did I just have really really bad luck with my drop? I find it hard to believe that so few are getting broken. If I do fix and keep my Captivate I want to get a really protective case for it.

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels. Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

anyone have this problem w/ the moment whereby your face touches the screen and causes accidentally pressed keys, things to move on screen, etc. associated w/ touching the screen? I think I remember this happening once or twice on the moment but admittedly, I don't use it much so not sure if the lock screen was on, screen was off, etc. Just looking to see if anyone if affected by this or if it's a known problem.

I have the screen timeout set to 1 min which works fine until I use the phone. When using the phone the screen times out (and locks) in about 5 seconds. This is a real pain when using voicemail etc and you need to interact with the keypad.

From Android widget screen guidelines,we know that, home screen has 4*4 cells, and in portrait orientation, each cell is 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. I think these are for baseline HVGA screen. How about for large screens and hdpi screens, do they still have 4*4 cells for widget and each cell in portrait orientation is still 80 pixels * 100 pixels?
