HTC EVO 4G :: Froyo Wireless Hotspot
May 13, 2010So we've heard that Froyo will include a wireless hotspot. Is this something that Sprint can/will be blocking?

View 2 RepliesI have a Droid running the recent Froyo update. I'm wondering if there is a way to root my phone and do something (install an app?) that will allow me to use the phone as a wifi hotspot without installing a custom rom? I'm not a super adventurous user (mostly concerned about speed/stability); I would just like to utilize this feature if possible.
If it isn't possible to do this without installing a custom rom, is there a rom available that makes minimal changes to the standard OS just to enable a few missing features like tethering and wifi hotspot?
How is Sprint going to deal with the hotspot charge once it becomes native to the OS?
View 38 Replies View RelatedI've seen a lot of scattered comments about this subject, but it all seems inconsistent. I would absolutely love to have my phone be a wireless hotspot for my computer. However, I'd like to do this without being charged from sprint. Now I know this is obviously something sprint wouldn't want their customers to do so I have two main questions:
1) Do you absolutely have to root your phone for it to be able to act as a hotspot for free?
2) If so, what would be the negative effects of rooting your phone. I'm assuming it would void warranty. Anything else?
I just got a WiFi IPad so i'm wanting to wireless tether. I already had PDNet for my notebook but of course thats not going to work for the IPad. I looked at the 3G Hotspot feature on the incredible and of course i tried it just to see if it would work and it doesn't. You just get a verizon page when you try to browse the web. I know in the past you had to root to be able to tether wirelessly. With Froyo does that still hold true or is there some type of app you can download off the android marketplace? I don't know if i'm big on rooting my phone. Verizon i think will charge $20 for the convenience right?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to connect the phone to a router to create a wireless hotspot? Would/could this give better coverage than simply using the phone as the hotspot? I currently have a Rezound, and have yet to root so I am stuck with tethering, for now.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI finally got my fascinate yesterday. I know that there is a app out there called wireless tether that is used for a mobile hotspot. I know it requires rooting the phone. I need a simple very detailed instructions on how to do this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't even break 1MBps download on my iPad with it on 4G. I get 8MBps on the phone. I've read that the EVO is much better at it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently rooted my Incredible and installed Cyanogen 6.00 RC3. I liked some things about it but missed some of the stock HTC widgets and apps. The Cyanogen rom had wifi hot spot, and it worked great. I could connect more than one computer to it, as it acted like a Hotspot.
Today i reflashed to Virtuous 2.7 Rom, which is alot like the stock 2.2. I got back the things I missed in Cyanogen but no wifi hotspot. Instead, there is "Wireless Tethering" which doesn't seem to work. The latest version is installed, version 2.0.5-pre9. Neither of my computers can "see" the connection.
Is there any way I can get the wifi hot spot app that was in Cyanogen and install it on my phone with the Virtuous 2.7 Rom? wireless tethering really doesn't do what I want it to.
I recently rooted my EVO. I tried Barnacle Wifi Tether, which was connecting me at 11 mbps but was not able to view any web pages. I then tried Wireless Tether and was able to connect at only 11-24 mbps. I have had the Sprint Mobile Hotspot up until now, but was getting 54 mbps out of that.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?
View 15 Replies View RelatedI feel like I have done enough reading on knowing how to preform the root on my phone, but I am just curious as to how I get different features like wireless tether, or any tether for that matter, without having to download easytether or PDAnet. Is hot spot even available on our phones?
Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?
I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit.
I need a wireless connection to use Xbox Live, how does the hotspot feature work? Worth$ 20?
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhat are the differences and/or advantages to using Wireless Tether vs. "hacked" 3G Hotspot, which I've been seeing people talk about recently? I was under the impression that Wireless Tether is a free option for wireless hotspot capability - is using the hacked 3G hotspot less detectible or something?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI purchased a HTC Desire a few days ago and I think it's great. However, there is one thing that bothers me. I've been quite slow at joining the smartphone community, primarily due to all the reports/stories of high phonebills relating to internet usage. So, having got my hands on the phone its self - I thought I'd play with it for a while and stick to using my home wifi connection for downloading apps and playing with map applications etc.
The phone came pre-installed with Android 2.2 and therefore has this wireless hotspot app built in. So, to see how it worked, I enabled the feature and connected to the phone from my laptop.
My first surprise was that it worked. My laptop was connected to the phone and web pages were loading up on it. Realising that my phone was already set up to connect to my wireless router for internet access though, I figured that it was probably sharing that connection with my laptop. Well, at least that's what I was hoping...
At this point I unplugged my home modem/router and tried again. Fully expecting my laptop to complain about the lack of internet connectivity, I was quite shocked to find that web pages were loading up on my laptop and there's now a '3G' logo (with flashing up/down arrows) showing on the top status bar of the phone.
From what I've said here, my only conclusion is that my phone is transferring data over the mobile phone network, but considering that I don't have a data plan, how can this be? If I disable the hotspot feature (with my home router switched off), my phone cannot access the internet, but if I enable the wireless hotspot feature of the phone and connect to it - my laptop can.
My SIM card is from Tchibo Germany (o2 network).
I am getting ready to "try" to root my phone and the one bit of info that I would like to save is all the wireless hotspot locations/passwords I have collected. What is the best way to do this?
I am also wondering, I have read several threads on people rooting their phone back one version to the 2.05 I think it was. Why would you do that? I thought I read there is a 2.1 working root correct?
Has anyone else notice the slow tethering speed on Froyo (FRF91)?I ran speedtest on 3 devices while tethering is turned. Here are the result:Nexus One (the tethering host device): 2Mbit/s down, 600Kbit up.My laptop on WIN 7 (connect to the hotspot): 200Kbit/s D, 600Kbit up Ipad (connected to the hotspot): 400Kb down, 600Kb up.The slow speed really annoys me. Even youtube is not watchable at the lowest quality setting. However, the upload speed is actually stay unaffected in all 3 situations, which made me think somehow the speed is controlled by Froyo.
View 8 Replies View RelatedFroyo is supposed to bring tethering and wifi hotspot for free. Do you think Sprint will have enough influence to have this feature disabled and retain that BS $29.99 hotspot/tethering fee? Currently, usb tethering is disabled (the famous error code 67), you think we'll see error code 67 with froyo comes out?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am a new member here, just joined a few days ago. I've had my HTC Incredible (Verizon) for about 2-3 weeks and so far I love it. I've been reading these forums every day, multiple times a day ever since I joined here a few days ago, but haven't posted anything yet. I remember the first day I joined here I saw a thread that was discussing a custom Froyo ROM that you could install on your phone that would NOT root your phone. However, I also saw one that allowed free hotspot tethering, that didn't accrue any charges from Verizon Wireless, unless I am mistaken, but I beleive I did read that someone where on here. I'm not looking for someone to walk me through how to install, or root the phone or anything like that, I understand all the inns and outs of doing that.....I provide PC technical support for a living, working on my B.S. degree in Computer Science, so I'm pretty fluent in the technical aspects of working the phone and rooting and all of that, I was just trying to have someone point me in the right direction to the Foryo update.zip/rom that you could install on your phone that would do the following two options:1. I would prefer the version that doesn't root the phone, but instead just installs, if I have to end up rooting the phone that's fine, I would just prefer not to only because of possibly voiding the warranty, not because I'm afraid of screwing it up haha, I feel perfectly comfortable doing it if I must.2. I read one of these allowed free hotspot tethering and also got rid of Verizon's bloatware as well, I don't know if all of these are found all in one custom rom, but if they are that would be great if you could point me in the direction where I can download it at.

Has anyone managed to get it to work with a Linux laptop? In the countryside where i am my mobile broadband fails frequently so it's a good feature. My Win7 laptop connects easily, but my LInux laptop doesn't. Haven't spent much time on the problem either - so before I do, anyone got it to work or is it a waste of time trying to?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLike the the post says my wireless tether no longer works( at leat not fast ) with any of my 2.2 nandroid backup I have all the wireless thether downloads ( the 2.0.2 and all the 2.0.5 versions ) and they just stoped transfering or transfer really slow. By slow I mean it will take anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute sometimes longer for a page to load. This is the case with all my 2.2 roms Damage Control 3.5, Baked Snack 1.0 and 1.5, Fresh 3.something and even my stock 2.2 rooted rom. This is the case with any kernel and I have been using various Kings, (but tend to stick with Netarchy's kernels) All with the same problem. Everything else works flawlessly.
This wouldnt be a big deal except I use wireless tether everyday for homework so it is a must have for me. I had to use the tether feature on my wifes Palm Pre (you know how that made me feel) I have her phone overclocked to 800mhz and it felt as if her battery was going to melt or explode, which usuall happens if you use it for too long. I had to get an Ice pack and put a towel on it to keep the phone cool while tethering.
I even tried it with flashing new room and kernel and the only app being all the versions of the wireless tether. That still was a no/go.
I however did find a solution but not a good one. I had a nandroid back up of a HTC 2.1 stock rooted rom with Nand unlocked and with the FPS un capped. This however when I look for wireless networks to connect to on my computer, it shows up as 3computer connected together instead of the 5 escalating bars like in the att comercials (dont ban me for that)
but it works perfectly and lightning fast. The version I'm usuing is the 2.0.2 version not any of the 2.0.5 versions.
I know this is a bit drawn out but can anyone explain why this happened? I mean it worked one night and the next it didnt. Or can someone can someone explain why it works on 2.1 and not on 2.2?
I miss some of my 2.2 feature but there are none that I can't live without but I would like to be on the latest software version.
So we are pretty sure this is coming to Froyo. How can VZW tell if our tethering is wireless? And what does you guys believe this is going to do with our plans?
View 23 Replies View RelatedI don't see any "Tethering & portable hotspot" under "wireless & networks" settings as instructed in the Froyo manual. So Verizon has it blocked? Still have to root to do it, I suppose?
