HTC EVO 4G :: Gmail Slow To Sync
Jun 21, 2010
I'm new to the forum, new to Android, and new to Evo here I've had this phone for a few days now and it's sweeeet, but today I've been noticing that of the few devices I have around my place, the Evo is always the last pony across the line when it comes to getting updates to my Google services (GMail, calender, etc). I would have no problem accepting it as an issue with Google's servers or something like that (as described in similarly titled posts here), but it just seems too odd that other devices get updates nearly instantly, and the Evo consistantly lags behind. Is this a known issue? Are there any optimizations to look into? Where might I comb through the phone's settings to make sure everything is set up as it should be?

This is my first post on the androidforums. I usually just read what other people wrote, but I can't seem to find a related post for my current problem.I date someone overseas in S. Korea, and since there's no way to send text msgs in Korean from here, I talk to her using activesync with a gmail account. She can check emails on her phone from Korea, and my phone sends me notification everytime I get an email from her. Basically it's same as texting except it allows me to type in Korean and doesn't cost a dime. For the reasons mentioned above, saving battery life isn't much of an option for me. I need to have activesync or gmail push running instantly. I tried using "check email every 5 minutes", but just imagine having to stay idle for 5 minutes everytime you text with your friends.
As of today, gmail push on android seems to work with 5 - 30 minutes delay (or manual refresh). However, Exchange Activesync will not even allow me to sync gmail (Different errors every time even though I'm putting the same information; gmail address,m.google.com as server address, username & password). I thought activesync just allows me to use "gmail push" on HTC mail app, so I don't quite understand why gmail app works (despite the lag), but activesync won't even let me sync my mail. Activesync last worked on 06/17/2010.Also, gmail push works with no lag when I'm on wifi. Is this normal?I'm starting to think there's a problem with the Sprint network or my phone. Gmail push also works instantly if my 3G bar is white. If it's greyed out, no emails come until the 3G bar turns white. Now I have to turn on AIM or MSN messenger to keep the data flowing and manually keep the 3G bar white. Then gmail push comes instantly. It's pretty ridiculous because the battery then lasts about 2-4 hours.

im not an expert on how push email works, but my understanding is that gmail messages should appear on my phone without me having to refresh or manually sync the gmail app. for a reason unknown to me, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesnt. at night, i shut down wifi and the mobile network to conserve battery and start up the mobile network when i leave for work in the morning. i get notification of new yahoo email, thru the htc widget, almost instantaneously, yet gmail doesnt come thru until i manually sync the gmail app. then during the course of the day, sometimes gmail messages get pushed right thru and other times not at all until i manually sync the app. meanwhile my yahoo mail comes thru flawlessly.
considering gmail is supposed to push and the htc widget does not, this is the opposite of what i expect. as far as settings, i have auto sync enabled for both the device and for the gmail app. while i always assume user error until proven otherwise, in this instance i think i have all the correct settings, which makes sense considering sometimes gmail does get pushed. its just erratic and unpredictable. anybody got any ideas what's going on here?

I have noticed that Gmail is taking a little bit longer to sync, if it syncs at all. I have had to use the manual refresh in my Gmail app to populate mail most of the day today.I have run some tests, and it appears that Gmail will sync in random amounts of time. Sometimes 5-10 minutes, sometimes more than 15 minutes. Up until yesterday, it was almost instantaneous. When I send mail, or change labels, or delete mail on my Droid, the changes are noticed on my Gmail account within a minute or just like normal. It appears to only be a problem with fetching new mails.I have cleared the Gmail app cache, I have turned off sync - rebooted my phone - turned sync on again everything I can think of.

Gmail.is supposed to be pushed to the Incredible correct? I am using the HTC mail widget for my pop work account and the gmail icon for gmail. But email seems much slower to reach the gmail account. Also when I send emails out the.gmail takes considerably longer.

Is anyone else seeing slower push from Gmail? Its taking 20-30 minutes for me to get my email on my droid over the last 2 days. I haven't downloaded any new software but have gone to getting email within minutes to getting email within 30 minutes if I am lucky.

Anyone else noticed the gmail delivery from the Droid sometimes takes days? It doesn't always happen, and doesn't seem to matter the domain to which you are sending, even other gmail accounts. For example, I sent an email on a Friday, and it wasn't recieved until the following Monday. A friend of mine, another Droid user, sent an email to me and I didn't get it for three days. He too says he's noticed delayed mail delivery from the Droid. I've also noticed that sometimes the gmail icon opens a state of gmail from several days ago. I have to refresh the screen to get to 'current' data, even though I used gmail daily on the Droid.

I know how to use google and search, but I still like personal feedback incase I missed something.Rooted with Unrevoked. Overclock Widget battery life tweak and the google talk/flickr/other battery tweaks. I'm going on 16 hours today with normal usage and the tweaks - Anyhow, yesterday and prior to that gmail and gvoice push was instant, but today and last night it's been slow and often never even comes unless I go to the app and update it manually. I do have ATK installed, but turned the auto kill to off and only use it when the bloat-sprint apps get running. So don't flame about that. Also, I changed the notification sound on each account and now I hear the set sound (quagmire app) and the android default after - when a push actually comes through.I can't find any settings that I unchecked that would make it not update as fast or at all (been back though all of them), but perhaps something else is screwy - I do have gmail and gvoice tabs open on 1 to 2 computers all day, if that would do it.And I guess I can't use data (unless it's wifi or 4G) while I'm in a phone call? Which really sucks because I like to do data related stuff while I'm talking to family and people who just blaber on and on. Miss that about my iPhone but other than that, I'm sold on android - 9 people I know got the evo already.

I'm having a problem with Google Voice. When I get an incoming text, I don't get any notification for it. I have inbox notifications checked, but it doesn't happen until I manually open the GV inbox, or sometimes not until I open the inbox and the specific conversation the message was a part of. This is true, even 8 hours later. So if I don't check my GV inbox/conversations for 8 hours, the phone gives me no notification of a message. I know this is not normal because a month ago I was having no problem with this. Could it be that I started using ADW Launcher a couple weeks ago? I haven't heard of any issues with this caused by ADW before Another thing I've experienced weird is the Gmail app. This morning I received 2 e-mails at about 7 and 8 a.m., though again I got no notification in the status bar and I had no idea I'd received the e-mails until I manually checked the Gmail app, even though notifications are enabled. This hasn't been a problem until a couple days ago. Thirdly, sometimes a friend will text my GV number and it will send to make phone's message inbox, not to GV. This only happens with one contact, and even then not all the time. My friend says he sends all of the texts to the same number, but I suspect he has my old number still in his phonebook and sometimes he just selects the wrong number, so I don't suspect it to be related, but this issue started happening at the same time as the other notification issues, so I thought I should include it.I would be very grateful for any help/advice you guys could provide!

Network: T-Mobile
Android 4.1.1
Conditions present on Wifi(Excellent speeds@10 Mbps)
When I open the Gmail app to either check my email, or read an email that I received an alert for it takes forever to load the email in the app. It also sometimes takes awhile to load the list, the problems with network connection with it being very fast and loads web pages including Mail.google.com fast.

I am looking for a functionality where the SMS on the phone can be synced to cloud (preferably to GMail, like Chat). Is there work going on in that area. Is there a SMS like service existing to which I can perform sync. I understand that GMail had launched a SMS functionality for US users sometime back. Is there an API to access to that?

At some point today my phone has developed a problem syncing my Gmail. The last time it synced successfully was at 1111 this morning. Since then when I go into my Gmail on the phone it displays just 2 recent messages, and below that I get an error message with a red exclamation mark saying "No connection", and a button "Try again". If I do try again I get the same result. If I go to Settings and then Accounts/Sync I can see that my Google account has a red sync symbol. At the bottom of the screen there is an error message stating that "Sync is experiencing problems. The program will be back soon." If I go into my Google account details there are exclamation marks against Sync Contacts and Sync Calendar. If I try to sync Gmail I see a red exclamation mark for a split second on top of the rotating sync symbol, and then it disappears. But my Gmail hasn't been synced.
If I tap on Sync Now at the bottom, the phone starts syncing all 3 categories, and the exclamation marks disappear. But then if I go back into my Gmail to retrieve my messages I still get no connection.I am at a loss what to do to fix this. I really don't want to delete the Google account from my phone and reload it, as this would apparently involve performing a factory reset, which I am loathe to do unless I really have to. I would add that my Google account (contacts, mail and calendar) all appear fine on my PC.

The heading pretty much says it all. I've been searching and can only find people with Hero's saying there is an option in People - Groups, then press menu, and you should be able to select what groups to sync. But I don't have this option. (Though I did here one Hero owner saying his option wasn't there at first.) Strangely, I even have more contacts than my Gmail "all contacts". Somehow I have some duplicates or fragments, I don't know. how to leave out syncing All Contacts?

I have xtrROM 4.0.4 installed and its working great. I do have an issue with my Gmail coming in late though. I had a reminder from my Google calendar yesterday at 1pm, and I got the email for it today @ 4:30pm. I saw when 4.0.6.1 came out it said on a post here "fixes the Gmail Sync issue". Is this the issue I'm seeing? Since I have everything running how I want, is it worth upgrading to 4.0.6.1? Do I have to do a full wipe and reinstall everything? Or can I flash right on top (after a NAND backup of course)?

If you make a new contact on your phone and save it as a google contact, it should automatically be synced to you google account right?I tried everything, and the contact is not to be found on the web when i log into my pc. Do you have to send an email through the gmail app first to get it saved, or is there something wrong?

I go into my GMail account and add pictures, using the tool on the site. I check my phone, and some show up. Others don't. I wait a while... still no go. I go into the settings and force a sync. Still no love.
So, some pictures show up on the phone, and others do not. Should I wait a few hours or something? Is there some pictures that will work in GMail, but the phone rejects? I'm not all broken up over this, but it sure is inconvenient.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I didn't understand the choices (save on SIM, phone or Google) when I created my phone contacts. About half came from GMail. But the other half either came from Facebook etc, or were created on the phone -- and saved to the phone. I can't find a way to re-save the non-Google contacts to Google. I want to get the phone contacts up to Google so the sync/backup system will work. How? (Other than manually doing the whole damn thing again.)

This sync way is a little different. I've set up a sync from Gmail to my Xperia X10, but I want it backwards too. Just when I'm hanging with friends and meet new ones.. I add them to my phone. But If I want to mail them from my home computer. I want to manage the contacts directly from my Gmail. So when it does not sync backwards, I cannot.Any way I can sync the contacts from my Phone to Gmail?

I noticed that the Family / Friends / Colleagues groups on Google (the default, unchangeable groups there) aren't synced with my Hero. As a work-around I've created 2 new groups, "My Family" and "My Friends", but this is messy (I end up with both "Family" AND "My Family" on gmail, but just "My Family" on my Hero). Is there any way to sync those basic 3 groups?

Since yesterday, I can't sync Gmail, I cant actually download from the market (although I can initiate), and I cant open Google Talk (it opens for a split second then closes, no force quit or error messages at all).I have searched for a solution all morning.I have tried going to google and google storage in applications and clearing cache/data to no help.I even went back to a nandroid from 2 weeks ago, no help there either. The only thing I have done is accidently change my password online from a PC.I changed it back 5 minutes later to the original (which is the one the phone uses).I am using Fresh 2.0D.PS yes I wiped when I went back to an old nandroid backup...Yes my sync settings are correct.
