HTC Desire :: Froyo Wifi Hotspot With A Linux Laptop?
Aug 5, 2010
Has anyone managed to get it to work with a Linux laptop? In the countryside where i am my mobile broadband fails frequently so it's a good feature. My Win7 laptop connects easily, but my LInux laptop doesn't. Haven't spent much time on the problem either - so before I do, anyone got it to work or is it a waste of time trying to?

I decided to try the WiFi hotspot available through 2.2. GREAT! Actually worked quite a bit better than I thought it would. Only trouble is, ... now I'm back at home, it fails to connect to the home network.
+ Restarting phone
+ Re-entering password
+ Forgetting network + refinding
WiFi sees the network, says "Connecting", comes up "Failed to connect", "Scanning" and loops on that sequence. I know the router's working because this laptop is using it right now

If you've upgraded to official froyo you probably know that downgrading can be difficult, especially if you have an SLCD screen. If you did a branded upgrade (e.g. Vodafone) then the old methods won't work at all.Since current rooting methods won't work on froyo this can be a big problem.I've created a tool that will downgrade Froyo to stock 2.1. It requires a goldcard if your phone is branded. The download details as well as instructions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256

I've just purchased a 32gig Ipad Wifi Only and wondered if it would be possible to link this to a HTC desire (running Froyo) when I'm on the move? I understood that you could make the desire a wifi hotspot and connect it to laptop etc so just wondered if this would also work with Ipad

How do you prioritize which Wifi Hotspot the Desire connects to? When I come to work my Desire automatically connects to BT Openzone or FON when I want it to connect to my work router?

I'm wanting some advice from those who have used their Desires as a hotspot (either on 2.2 natively or with an app). How reliable and how fast is it?
The reason I ask: I'm thinking of getting an ipad (cue the abuse!) and rather than spend he extra on the 3G model I was considering using my Desire as a wifi hotspot.
Previously, I had an iphone 3G jailbroken and used the mywi app to do what I've just explained but with my laptop. It worked really well although not flawlessly.
Also, after some testing with the same sim card, I found it to be a bit slower than either a dongle or by connecting the phone via USB to the laptop (the latter of course won't be an option with the USB-less ipad!)
My suspicion is that I'm probably better off spending the extra as it probably won't be flawless, or as fast, using my phone as a wifi spot.

Not sure if I am the only person who has come across this problem... My wifi on my Desire will disconnect if I have my Sony laptop connected to the wifi. It seems that my laptop steals the HTC's ip address. I don't really want to assign my laptop a static IP address.

Can you tell me (viz. those of you with a working hotspot!), can you still use your browser when the hotspot is active. Just turning the hotspot on on my desire cuts the (mobile data) internet connection with the browser, and anything else!
In fact even after turning off the hotspot I have to toggle mobile data on/off & toggle APN's to get mob. data back.
Also which Orange APN's/usernames/passwords do you have success with & which not?
I have tried all the posted solutions & even HTC technical!
Any bright ideas anyone?
I think my last resort is to de-brand (unlocked Tmob used on Orange sim) I reckon!
I have to get this working for use abroad. It's driving me nuts!

But I dont know where to get the apps listed below. Am I missing something?
Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Other devices can connect via wireless and share your phones internet. Take screenshots of your phone from your phone. Better memory management, your phone will never slow down. Overclock your phone, more speed! (If possible!) Full backup ability. Backup your whole phone state. Restoring this backup puts your phone in the exact same condition as the backup. Use 'Market Enabler' to access paid apps if currently unavailable in your country.

I go out into cities alot, and I usualy grab a coffee in either a Costa, or a Nero. These both have BTFON WiFi hotspots. At the moment I can connect to these as I have BT Openworld at home. However, my BT contract is being cancelled tomorrow, they're bloody expensive, and as a result, my access to these hotspots will stop unless I subscribe to thier BTFON service.
If I stop my Desire connecting to these by switching off WIFI, will the phone then automatically switch to 3G for internet access?

Just got 2.2 installed on my vodafone desire, and decided to test out the wifi hotspot since my girlfriend doesnt have internet in her flat.
We got the desire setup ok, and we got her laptop connected, but the only site that would load was facebook, and even then it had a few errors and took a few refreshes before it loaded correctly
Is there any settings that would allow it to connect to other sites? I tried google, bbc, hotmail, tvshack and facebook.

I've never expiremented with ad hoc networks, nor do I have an EVO yet, so this might be completely far-fetched, but is it possible? What I'm saying is:
1. Use one of the free/one time fee tethering apps
2. You now have internet on your Windows laptop
3. Set up an ad hoc network to share your internet
4. Connect other devices to that network

So I decided to actually try out Barnacle today, as I've had it installed for a couple days now. Set my options, started it, and connected with an older Acer laptop that a co-worker had at the office. Here are the speeds I got from the local San Diego, CA speedtest.net server...
5.13Mb down
1.37Mb up
Wow...that's phenominal for a mobile device!

Has anyone else notice the slow tethering speed on Froyo (FRF91)?I ran speedtest on 3 devices while tethering is turned. Here are the result:Nexus One (the tethering host device): 2Mbit/s down, 600Kbit up.My laptop on WIN 7 (connect to the hotspot): 200Kbit/s D, 600Kbit up Ipad (connected to the hotspot): 400Kb down, 600Kb up.The slow speed really annoys me. Even youtube is not watchable at the lowest quality setting. However, the upload speed is actually stay unaffected in all 3 situations, which made me think somehow the speed is controlled by Froyo.

Froyo is supposed to bring tethering and wifi hotspot for free. Do you think Sprint will have enough influence to have this feature disabled and retain that BS $29.99 hotspot/tethering fee? Currently, usb tethering is disabled (the famous error code 67), you think we'll see error code 67 with froyo comes out?

I am a new member here, just joined a few days ago. I've had my HTC Incredible (Verizon) for about 2-3 weeks and so far I love it. I've been reading these forums every day, multiple times a day ever since I joined here a few days ago, but haven't posted anything yet. I remember the first day I joined here I saw a thread that was discussing a custom Froyo ROM that you could install on your phone that would NOT root your phone. However, I also saw one that allowed free hotspot tethering, that didn't accrue any charges from Verizon Wireless, unless I am mistaken, but I beleive I did read that someone where on here. I'm not looking for someone to walk me through how to install, or root the phone or anything like that, I understand all the inns and outs of doing that.....I provide PC technical support for a living, working on my B.S. degree in Computer Science, so I'm pretty fluent in the technical aspects of working the phone and rooting and all of that, I was just trying to have someone point me in the right direction to the Foryo update.zip/rom that you could install on your phone that would do the following two options:1. I would prefer the version that doesn't root the phone, but instead just installs, if I have to end up rooting the phone that's fine, I would just prefer not to only because of possibly voiding the warranty, not because I'm afraid of screwing it up haha, I feel perfectly comfortable doing it if I must.2. I read one of these allowed free hotspot tethering and also got rid of Verizon's bloatware as well, I don't know if all of these are found all in one custom rom, but if they are that would be great if you could point me in the direction where I can download it at.

I have a Droid running the recent Froyo update. I'm wondering if there is a way to root my phone and do something (install an app?) that will allow me to use the phone as a wifi hotspot without installing a custom rom? I'm not a super adventurous user (mostly concerned about speed/stability); I would just like to utilize this feature if possible.
If it isn't possible to do this without installing a custom rom, is there a rom available that makes minimal changes to the standard OS just to enable a few missing features like tethering and wifi hotspot?
