HTC EVO 4G :: Can I Silence All Calls Except Work So I Can Sleep?
Jun 11, 2010
The Evo is my first smartphone (coming from the Rumor, lol) and I'm wondering if there is a setting or app that can silence all calls except select numbers. I ask because I'm on call at work, and I hate being woken up by other calls - but must leave my phone on while I sleep.

Is there an app that will put the phone in silent mode for all incoming calls except for certain numbers of your choosing?

The UK HTC TV adverts show a Desire, and the tag that you can simply flip your phone to silence it.

This has happened to me a few times now. If I miss a call, or get a voicemail, the screen will turn on as usual but then it won't sleep until I either press the power button or unlock the phone. The screen will stay on indefinitely (on the lock pattern screen). This only started happening after I updated to 2.2. So now if I'm away from my phone and get a call, the battery will be almost completely drained by the time I get back to it (sometimes up to 4 hours later). This might also be happening if I get a calender notification too...anyone know what's going on?

I've had an HTC Desire on Orange in the UK for about 6 weeks and it is having persistent problem. Firstly despite having a strong 4-bar out of 4 signal, online services and the internet do not work at all when a 3G signal is being received (e.g. news, weather, all widgets, internet, email etc).Calls and texts do work however with a 3G signal. But when a 3g+ signal (HSDPA) is being received, all internet services as above work fine. However, when a 3+ signal is being received, the phone does not make or receive calls or text messages, and often fails to send texts. Calls I make immediately shut down (bleep + call ended), and incoming calls from other people go straight to answerphone. Also often when turning the data connection on/off, it freezes and has to be rebooted, and turning airplane setting on and off does not fix the problem.
I have also tried the different network settings (GSM, WCDMA, auto, etc). GSM sends and receives calls and texts but doesnt work (or is incredibly slow) with internet, and auto and WCDMA only show the problems as above.I don't think this is a network/coverage issues as, as I have seen many people reporting these same issues on other networks and in other parts of the UK, and I have read that other people are having to manually turn off HSDPA to be able to make calls (using an app?). Even if I can stop HSDPA from connecting to make sure the phone works, I still cant use the internet at all on 3g even GSM works better!
Finally, when I connect to a bluetooth device (e.g. car and headphones) the phone will connect briefly, and then randomly disconnect. I have also seen this issue reported elsewhere.I very much like the phone and don't want to get rid of it, but these problems are making the phone unuseable. Also I don't know if I should be contacting HTC or Orange about this. Will the upcoming Android 2.2 fix these problems?Anyone know how to fix this or if I need a new handset? Are there any apps that can help? Also does the Nexus One have these problems and are they fixed by Froyo?

Just got my Magic today (Rogers) and things went pretty smoothly. Phone unlocked fine, AT&T's APN entered correctly, web browsing is good, Exchange is up and running, etc. But, I am having a problem dialing outbound calls, it is only working intermittently. I'm in a known good service area (5 bars) and have strong signal. Half the time I try to make an outbound call, it fails after about 5 seconds of just sitting there and saying "dialing" - it just craps-out and I get the fast busy signal and a "called failed" message. I try again - same thing. Every once and a while it will go through - and then the cycle happens all over again. This isn't happening in any of my other devices. Could there be a setting in the "phone" area that I have to tweak or something? Obviously a phone that doesn't make calls consistently is no good to me!

I am looking for what can be done for video calling from my Evo to my home desktop as I travel a lot and when Fring was working with skype it allowed me to see my son and him to see me. Any suggestions as Fring video calls with MSN and Yahoo messenger don't seem to work.

Why android doesn't permit to record audio from speakers, for example in incoming calls ?
I've searched in the web and there is no way to record incoming stream audio...the only why is the follow :
Java: MediaRecorder recorder = new MediaRecorder(); recorder.setAudioSource(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC);
that records from microphone. Why this terrible bug?
I have founded some app that records incoming calls,

But my microphone for the HTC One SV doesn't work outside phone calls or the default voice recording program. Other programs like Skype or TinyChat don't seem to be picking up the microphone, I can receive sound from others just fine. But they can't hear me for some reason.

I have not seen this mentioned but I have trouble with it every day. When I make a call the proximity sensor does not always work. During the call my cheek will pull up the keypad and then start dialing. Sometimes this will happen even if I remember to hit the sleep/wake button as I start the call (to turn off the screen). Very embarrassing to explain to the other party why your phone is touch-toning over their conversation. Does this happen to everyone or just me? It did it with the I4 and now the K4 firmware.

I apologize if these topics were already covered in previous threads.I wasn't able to find anything related in my searches. Auto-rotation for keyboard when answering a text message received in sleep mode does not work. If I actively send a text when phone is already awake, keyboard rotates with no problem but when I go to reply to a text that I received while phone is in sleep mode, the keyboard does not rotate. Is this the norm?I am also experiencing a delay when the I wake the phone. After unlocking the phone, I used to go straight to my home page, now I get a "loading" message which takes several seconds. Is this due to the number of apps I have loaded? Is it possibly due to number of photo frames I have on my home screen or the complexity of the wallpaper?

I know you can flip the phone over to silence an incoming call, but it doesn't work with text messages. Does anyone know if there is an app that will do this? Sometimes I'm in the middle of something and the only way to shut the thing up is to turn on the phone and pull down the notification bar. Is there any faster way to silence a text alert?

Is there a way to silence an incoming call?
- Your phone is on the table, locked
- Ringer and vibrate are enabled
- Someone calls you
- Swipe down to answer, swipe up to ignore
- You wish to stop phone ringing but not necessarily dismiss/ignore the call as the other person gets through to voicemail and knows you rejected their call
There must be an easy way to make it silent yet not let the other person know you don't want to answer right now?I know you can flip the phone over to achieve exactly this, but is it achievable by pressing something without having to flip the phone?

Is there a setting on the Droid X to allow you to silence everything but the phone? I saw one app listed, Foxy Ring, but wondering if there is a way to do this on the phone without having to have an app running? I read some concerns over battery use with Foxy Ring. Any other apps for this.

Coming from a BB it was easy to shut up notifications for messaging at night. I need to have the phone active but the notification tone from emails is driving me towards throwing this phone away. Another option would be turning off notification tone all together. But I can't figure out how to do that either

I'm really loving the Swype beta on my HTC EVO, but when I'm typing it can be loud and annoying, especially since I can set the stock keyboard to silent. The only way I can quiet Swype is by setting my phone's ringer volume to Vibrate or Silence. Is there a menu within Swype that will let me silence the keystrokes?

I saw my friend today armed with his iPhone 3GS - we were in a restaurant with our families and on seeing my Hero he became quite defensive trying to imply that Android would be no better than Betamax or HD DVD and that Apple had already won the smartphone battle. I then started showing him some of our apps like shopsavvy and google skymap along with the SenseUI. His respose was to say "I bet you cant do this" - his iPhone then made a puny fart sound. The was no choice for me at this stage - I launched "Noble Fart" and activated a long wet one - his face dropped at the superiority of the sound and the iPhone got put back in his pocket. All I had to contend with then was the look on our wive's faces along with most of the table's occupants near to us!

Is there no way to silence a ringer set for text message notifications? I don't think trimming mp3s is a good solution, and it appears this has been a problem for a while now looking through other phone threads. This seems like a pretty big oversight in functionality.
