Android :: How To Silence Keystrokes On Swype?
Jul 14, 2010
I'm really loving the Swype beta on my HTC EVO, but when I'm typing it can be loud and annoying, especially since I can set the stock keyboard to silent. The only way I can quiet Swype is by setting my phone's ringer volume to Vibrate or Silence. Is there a menu within Swype that will let me silence the keystrokes?

I'm trying to setup a KeyListener on an EditText widget. My code is as follows: Where mMsgToSend is my EditText widget. The problem is that whenever I implement this code, everything stops showing up in my EditText widget. Anything I type does not show up in the widget. When I set a break point in my code everything is executing as I would expect it to. If I do not have the code in place, everything shows up in the widget as I type. My understanding is that if you want everything to be handled normally then you return a "false" from the event handlers otherwise you return a "true".

How can I best implement a system for send keystrokes/commands via an iPhone and/or Droid to a desktop or laptop computer via WiFi or bluetooth? There are apps for VLC, Keynote and other applications that do this, so I know it's possible but don't know what technology base to use. The implementation is probably different on Windows and OS X, but if they could be similar that'd be a big win. If VNC-type technology is used, that'd be fine but I only need to send key commands and mouse clicks—I don't need to be able to navigate the screen space.

I have an LG Optimus G Pro. Suddenly it started saying letters out loud as I type them, even when my phone is on silent. How do I make it stop? Its not the talk back feature as that is turned off and its only the keystrokes that are being said.

Is there anyway I can make my Right Thumbstick on my controller act like it's pressing letters, rather then a proper analog stick? (i.e. if I move the Right Thumbstick around in a circle, then I want to see letters come up, as if I were typing them.)
I've been trying to use USB/BT Joystick Center for this, but I'm having a little trouble. When I bring up the edit mode, while in the DS emulator the app still treats the right thumbstick as a proper analog stick, even though I re-mapped the right stick in the main app to letters (R stick UP-M, R stick RIGHT- N, R stick - DOWN O, R stick - LEFT P)
Are there any apps that will allow me to map keystrokes to a analog stick, and be able to emulate virtual on screen controls for games, and emulators?

When typing really fast in Landscape mode on my HTC Incredible I am noticing that the default HTC Incredible keyboard misses about 30% of my keystrokes. This is annoying, especially since I type faster in landscape than in portrait, yet the faster I type, the more keystrokes get missed.
Missed keystrokes seems to rarely occur, if ever, in portrait mode even if I type relatively fast.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it due to graphic-lag, lack of multi-touch typing or some setting?
I've tried Shapewriter, SwipeIT, Swype, Better Keyboard, and Smart Keyboard and have found either their layout sucks and/or they miss significantly more keystrokes than TouchInput does in Landscape.

Does Android limit the rate of keystrokes when typing?
I have a custom bluetooth keyboard that can send entire sentences at once. On iOS, the text appears pretty much instantaneously. On Android, when I send the sentence it kinds of scrolls through and types it out, taking about a second to actually type out the entire sentence.
Basically instead of typing out the entire sentence at once, the text is entered one letter at a time with a little delay in between.
Is there a way to disable this keystroke limit? I would like to be able to type entire sentences quickly.

It might sound lazy, but I am looking for a better/faster way (other than voice, which only works in quiet areas) to dial someone in my contacts. I am coming from BlackBerry, where I used to tap out the first few letters in the first OR last name and it would quickly narrow to the desired contact. Then click 'send. Each of these can take several or many "keystrokes." Also, for some reason if I type several keystrokes of a first or last name, it only recognizes a name if that contact happens to be indexed according to that part of name. For example, if John Doe is indexed as Doe, John, then typing out J-O-H...does not bring up John Doe. But for some crazy reason the indexing for my contacts got screwed up so half of them are sorted by first name and the other half by last name (so changing the Options settings doesn't get them all indexed correctly). Also because there are so many choices (using Contacts, using the dialer, using the search box on the homescreen, etc.) there isn't just one clear best way.

Is it possible to prevent the screen from locking? Right now, I have to wake the phone, then unlock the screen. Waste of time.
Also, it is a minimum five key press to make a call. Wake > Unlock > Dialer > Favorites > Person. Is it possible to have one-touch calling from the home screen?

My job takes me to the courthouse several times a week. If you forget to silence your ringer and the phone rings, the judge takes the phone and you have to travel back to the courthouse at the end of the day to recover it. The judge also gets really really mad and gives lots of grief. So I need a failsafe way to automatically turn off the ringer while in the courthouse. I read this thread Set profile by GPS location about a program named Locale, but it indicated that if the phone loses the GPS signal, Locale will automatically revert the phone to the default profile or some other profile. I come from a Symbian phone where the phone would "learn" every cell tower ID in a given area and then set the phone's profile upon getting a signal from one of those towers. The profile would stick, regardless of losing the signal, unless and until it got a signal from a different tower which was not on the list it had "learned" from the location area. That is failsafe. Is there anything for an Android based phone which will silence the ring on a failsafe basis?

I used to have a BB Tour. I could set it up to turn off notifications for email and text messages when I had the phone plugged in. The phone would still ring. I am looking for an app for my HTC Incredible that I could do basically the same thing. I would like to set the phone up so when I'm sleeping the notifications for SMS/MMS and EMAIL messages are muted, but the ringer for the phone is still active. Does anyone know of such an app or setting to do this?

I'm looking for a widget that will disable all sound (including system sound) and put the device into vibrate mode, similar to how the physical silence toggle works on the iPhone. I've tried the Beautiful Silence and Beautiful Vibrate widgets, but they do not play nice together on my Droid X: When I toggle silence, I cannot toggle vibrate and vice-versa. I then moved on to AudioManager, but that involved too many steps for my liking; I just want a quick button press. I am aware of Quick Profile, but that seems like overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish, though I haven't tried it yet. Currently, I'm using Sound Manager, which does exactly what I want, but as a shortcut and not a widget. This is almost perfect. The problem I'm having is that some times, when I click the shortcut it launches the Sound Manager app instead of it's normal behavior: launch the Sound Manager app, change the sound settings, and close Sound Manger in an instant.

I know you can flip the phone over to silence an incoming call, but it doesn't work with text messages. Does anyone know if there is an app that will do this? Sometimes I'm in the middle of something and the only way to shut the thing up is to turn on the phone and pull down the notification bar. Is there any faster way to silence a text alert?

I signed up for the beta testing a while back. Got this link in an email update from Swype. You have to uninstall swype and the old installer first. Access it from your Android phone. https://beta.swype.com/android/get/

Is there a way to silence an incoming call?
- Your phone is on the table, locked
- Ringer and vibrate are enabled
- Someone calls you
- Swipe down to answer, swipe up to ignore
- You wish to stop phone ringing but not necessarily dismiss/ignore the call as the other person gets through to voicemail and knows you rejected their call
There must be an easy way to make it silent yet not let the other person know you don't want to answer right now?I know you can flip the phone over to achieve exactly this, but is it achievable by pressing something without having to flip the phone?

Is there a setting on the Droid X to allow you to silence everything but the phone? I saw one app listed, Foxy Ring, but wondering if there is a way to do this on the phone without having to have an app running? I read some concerns over battery use with Foxy Ring. Any other apps for this.

Coming from a BB it was easy to shut up notifications for messaging at night. I need to have the phone active but the notification tone from emails is driving me towards throwing this phone away. Another option would be turning off notification tone all together. But I can't figure out how to do that either

I saw my friend today armed with his iPhone 3GS - we were in a restaurant with our families and on seeing my Hero he became quite defensive trying to imply that Android would be no better than Betamax or HD DVD and that Apple had already won the smartphone battle. I then started showing him some of our apps like shopsavvy and google skymap along with the SenseUI. His respose was to say "I bet you cant do this" - his iPhone then made a puny fart sound. The was no choice for me at this stage - I launched "Noble Fart" and activated a long wet one - his face dropped at the superiority of the sound and the iPhone got put back in his pocket. All I had to contend with then was the look on our wive's faces along with most of the table's occupants near to us!

Is there no way to silence a ringer set for text message notifications? I don't think trimming mp3s is a good solution, and it appears this has been a problem for a while now looking through other phone threads. This seems like a pretty big oversight in functionality.
