HTC EVO 4G :: Android System Running High

Jun 27, 2010

I was getting sick of the horrible battery life I was getting on my EVO and was seriously about to go to sprint and turn it in for a Blackberry which I never had problems with. I decided to research the phone today and stuff to help battery life and I found this website which has shown me a lot of things that I can do to help my battery life.

I noticed on most other peoples phones when they have a screenshot of their phones "usage" my Android System is 96%, cell standby 2% and Idle 2%. My phone also seems to be very warm at most times even when sitting on my counter in my Air Conditioned Condo. Is this something that's normal or am I losing it.

Also I have read that "rooting" my phone seems to be a common thing. From what I understand rooting allows me to access the "guts" of my phone but how will this help my battery life?

HTC Desire :: High - Android System - Battery Use

Apr 14, 2010

Does anyone notice that 'Android System' battery usage is very high?

I ran a test where i displayed just a photo

Battery Indicator
3G Watchdog
Photos
Advanced Task Killer Free

within 20 minutes the results on the battery are the following:

Android System: 63%
Display: 24%
Cell standby 13%

Any thoughts on to what might be causing Android System to be so high, only them programs are running. Does this happen to your system? I notice with web browsing its about the same usage as well, with wifi and internet taking up small amounts.

General :: Extremely High Data Usage Without Apps Running 4.2.2

Oct 20, 2013

I migrated from Mororola RAZR (XT910) to Alcatel One Touch Idox X (6040D) on both phones I have the same applications, but on the Alcatel it happens again and again that out of nowhere suddenly Streaming media starts to download a huge amount of data, until I restart the phone.

-Google backup, location, photo sync is OFF

This behavior happens even if the Apps such as IMDB, YOUTUBE, POWERAMP are force closed. I used Watch dog 3G so My Data Manager, but both of them just show "streaming media" as the process eating the data. As Youtube was noted in System data consumption I could set there Background data limitation, which worked a little bit, but the issue continues, like some other application would try to take over YT misbehavior

Yesterday the phone "streamed" like this 6GB of data on WIFI and almost 700 MB on mobile, last month with XT910, I lasted with 700 MB mobile data for more than 2 weeks.

Android :: Detecting If System Apps Are Running

Oct 11, 2010

We are trying to automate our QA process. We make wallpaper apps for Android. Once an app is installed, is there a way to figure out if the application is running since these have apps don't have a main class which we can check by doing a ps on android shell. I think keyboard/language apps would face a similar issue

For eg. If I install tetris and run it. Its main package will show up in shell ps. xyz.abc.Tetris. But the same is not true system apps in android.

I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them.

Could you just write some Java methods which I can call in order to get list of process, and method for killing them. Or just give me some advices.

Android :: System Kills Service / No Other Resource Consuming Application Is Running

Mar 9, 2010

I just would like to ask if anyone have encountered this strange behavior with other phone models or specifically HTC Tattoo wherein I have this service running for almost 5 hrs then after sometime the system kills the service. The phone does not restart actually nor any other 3rd party applicaton running in the background. Its only the service I have is running. I was wondering what were the causes that would force to close my service. Another strange thing is that before the service was closed I still can see all the logs in the logcat but after I saw that the service was closed I don't see any log information already seems like the phone was totally disconnected from my eclipse.

HTC EVO 4G :: Earpiece Speaker Buzz On High/1 Down From High

Jun 12, 2010

My speaker buzzes all the time on my phone (not the speaker phone - it works fine). It's not a network buzz, it's a vibration buzz of the metal or speaker. The center camera is also off-center a little bit, which makes me think something up there is off-center, misglued or loose.

We have two other evos and neither of them buzz on the same call. I called the Sprint Nav Voice Address thing from all 3 phones since that would be the exact same voice and words every time. Only mine buzzes. The other two don't have the camera problem either.

Android :: Loading Native Libraries - System Load - Dlopen - Nexus One After FRG83 System Update

Nov 17, 2010

I am an Android app developer, and I have purchased a Nexus One device which I use to continuously test my developed Android applications.

Background: ----------------- One of the applications I developed uses a native shared library (e.g. myNativeLib.so). Only my application loads & uses this native library. I had developed this app before Android NDK came out. I pack my native library into my apk's 'assets' folder, and during my application start- up, I extract this native library from my package's assets folder to my app private directory (i.e. <assets> -> /data/data/<myappprocess>/ myNativeLib.so). Then I use System.load() API in my application to dynamically load this native library.

Problem: ------------ This application was developed during Android 1.5 (i.e. cupcake) days {I didn't have the Nexus One then}. The above procedure has been working without any problems right from Android 1.5 to Android 2.2 (i.e. Froyo). I have also tested the same on my Nexus One for Android 2.1 (i.e. Eclair) and Android 2.2.

The problem began the moment I recently upgraded my Nexus One to Android 2.2.1 via the FRG83 system update. Now, whenever I try to load my native library, I get the following error:

D/dalvikvm( 3653): Trying to load lib /data/data/<myappprocess>/ <mynativelib>.so <some address> I/dalvikvm( 3653): Unable to dlopen(/data/data/<myappprocess>/ <mynativelib>.so): Cannot load library: link_image[1995]: failed to link <mynativelib>.so

What I have Tried: -------------------------- 1. I tried my application using Android 2.2 SDK (emulator)...it works, no issues. 2. I checked out the latest froyo & android2.2.1 source code from Android open-source, built & tested my application + native lib using the latest froyo source...it built & ran, no issues. This should've taken care of any changes in the native code dependencies between Android 2.2 & Android 2.2.1 3. I even checked Android 2.2.1 source code for dalvik (java System & Runtime classes) + bionic (linker & dlopen sources) between Android 2.2 & Android 2.2.1 (using source checked out from Android open-source), but couldn't find anything consequential 4. I am unable to return my Nexus One to Android 2.2.

Samsung Galaxy S : Recovery Boot Error - Can Not Access To /system/csc/VOD/system

Sep 4, 2010

Phone: UK Galaxy S Issue: Recovery boot error message in red writing

Multicsc : can not access to / system/csc/VOD/system/

Background: I have been trying to root my phone from information found in a youtube video. All went well and the little ninja bloke with the sniper rifle was in the app list. Tried installing busybox and was told that the phone was not rooted..

I think I ran the root application again and at some point I started getting this error message when in recovery. I have since run the one click root method to unroot the phone and the little nija dude is no longer there. Since I rooted the phone it will no longer connect to my wireless network, it finds the network and attempts to obtain an ip address. After a few min it times out and tries again. When I load the phone recovery the error message is still present.

Android : Kill The Currently Running Thread - If One Is Currently Running

Nov 4, 2010

I've created a class which is an extension of Thread. This class hits a web service and throws some data on screen. I don't care about persisting this data (the screen displays search results).

Currently, the user simply types into an EditText and clicks a search button. I'd like to take away the search button and implement something similar to Google's Instant Search where, as you type, the search results get updated.

This means, as the user types, the search parameters change. I want to be able to kill the currently running thread (if one is currently running) and spawn a new one with the new search string. How can this be achieved? Can I do it with Thread or will I need to use a new object?

Android :: High Data Usage?

Sep 26, 2010

So we have 2 Incredibles on a family plan and with this chatter of eventual data caps, I just was curious and took a look at our recent data usage on myverizon to see where we stand.I average about 5gb a month while my significant other is around 20gb! I am a moderately heavy web user (although I don't really have anyone to compare to, but I check the internet a lot during the day out of sheer boredom at work) and he by all means is not.Can somebody explain what exactly eats data and how it works? We are mostly just curious and are guessing it's an app. But *what* is doing it? Like does it draw data from the internet or something? Is that app updating or refreshing? The only thing I know about data is like if you refresh a page on the internet, then data is used. I refreshed a website twice and my usage according to 3d watchdog jumped about 1mb. Is that normal? Is it also normal for there to be data usage while your phone is asleep?

Android :: How To High Low Network Over Cell?

Apr 16, 2009

So my app works well in the emulator in various run configurations and on the device when the device is connected to WiFi. But when I switch off the WiFi on the device, the code that goes out to the network takes forever and then times out (i.e. doesn't return any data). Other people have reported this as well. I also notice that no data is going out or coming in when I look at the little up and down arrows on the 3G icon in the status bar on the G1. I am assuming that the Java code I am using should work for both types of connections, right? I mean, do I need to account for the fact that cell data network is very slow with high latencies i.e. pre-cache my data etc?

Android :: High Scores Table To App?

Jul 14, 2010

I am looking to add a (local, not online) high scores table to my Android app and I wanted to get some insight on the best way to approach the problem.

I have a list of users (right now being saved out to a file and read back in as an array of User objects), and the high scores need to reference this data to populate the table with the user's name and photo, etc.

For the display, I think a TableLayout would probably be my best option. I can make columns for picture, name, score, etc.

For the information itself, I'm thinking maybe a SQLite table would be the best way to organize my data? If so, then it may be worthwhile to move my user data to a SQLite table as well so I can ensure the data is cross-referenced properly.

I went with the SQLite database (using two tables) and it works great! Wasn't too hard to learn and get working either. For the layout, it turns out a ListView with a custom adapter was the best way to accomplish what I wanted (more flexible than a TableLayout).
