Android :: System Kills Service / No Other Resource Consuming Application Is Running

Mar 9, 2010

I just would like to ask if anyone have encountered this strange behavior with other phone models or specifically HTC Tattoo wherein I have this service running for almost 5 hrs then after sometime the system kills the service. The phone does not restart actually nor any other 3rd party applicaton running in the background. Its only the service I have is running. I was wondering what were the causes that would force to close my service. Another strange thing is that before the service was closed I still can see all the logs in the logcat but after I saw that the service was closed I don't see any log information already seems like the phone was totally disconnected from my eclipse.

Android :: Getting JSON To Jersey Web Service And Consuming It

Jul 30, 2010

I've just recently started out with Android development, and have progressed to the point where I have written a very basic Hello World Jersey RESTful web service, and successfully called it from within my Android App.What I want to do now though, is send a new user record (just name and password for now) to a web service in JSON format.I can create my JSON in the Android app just fine, but I don't know how to get it into the HTTP Request in such a way that the corresponding web service that @Consumes JSON can get at it.

1) Create Android App User object

2) Turn that into JSON

3) Put it on the HTTP request

4) Call the web service

5) Web service retrieve JSON from request

6) Parse the JSON into server side User object and deal with as I see fit(Don't worry people, I'll be fine with this bit,

7) Profit! ;)

Android :: Consuming WCF REST Service Is Very Slow

Aug 31, 2010

I have a WCF REST service built with C# and it returns an image as part of a CPU intensive operation. The client is running on Android (Java) By default, it will return a text JSON object that looks something like this:{"d",[9,0,77,12,11,...]}Those are they bytes of the image. Fine. However, all the solutions for decoding this JSON are intolerably slow. I've tried Gson, Jackson, and the built-in Android JSONObject class. I have no idea why they are so slow.As an alternative solution, I have my REST service return a GUID, and then that GUID can be used by the Android client to go to a regular URL that serves up the image as a regular binary stream, via an MVC controller. This works well, and it fast, and is pretty easy to handle on the Android side. However, it does feel like a bit of kludge and kind of a violation of the REST design principles.

HTC Incredible :: What Apps Running / Tell About Resource?

May 3, 2010

So I charged my battery last night and unplugged it 8AM. About 30min commute using it to play music, then exited and stored it (since I can't bring my phone into work). Left @5PM and once again played some music on the way home. I have made no calls, no texting at all, and now noticed that I'm at 16% and dropping fast (7:25PM). I have read most of the battery threads and have blue tooth, mobile, and GPS turned off. Under running services I have:
Mail: Mail Service
Calender: ObexService
Touch Input:Touch Input
Google: GTalkService
Sync Service: SyncService
Messages: Transaction Service
HTC Message Up loader: UploadMessageService
Battery Widget: BatteryWidgetUpdate
Are these killing my battery, and which ones can I kill off? Which app can tell me who the resource (battery, etc) hogs are?

HTC EVO 4G :: Android System Running High

Jun 27, 2010

I was getting sick of the horrible battery life I was getting on my EVO and was seriously about to go to sprint and turn it in for a Blackberry which I never had problems with. I decided to research the phone today and stuff to help battery life and I found this website which has shown me a lot of things that I can do to help my battery life.

I noticed on most other peoples phones when they have a screenshot of their phones "usage" my Android System is 96%, cell standby 2% and Idle 2%. My phone also seems to be very warm at most times even when sitting on my counter in my Air Conditioned Condo. Is this something that's normal or am I losing it.

Also I have read that "rooting" my phone seems to be a common thing. From what I understand rooting allows me to access the "guts" of my phone but how will this help my battery life?

Android :: Memory / Resource Leak With Application

Nov 24, 2009

I am experiencing a memory / resource leak on a T-Mobile G1 device with my application. I installed the "Task Manager" application from Android market and my memory usage is not monotonically increasing. It stays relatively flat over time. Furthermore, none of the other processes are chewing up tons of memory either (really, I can get into this state with just my app running). I am not experiencing this problem on any of the other Android phones (including Eris, Hero, and Droid).

The interesting thing is that if I kill my application, the phone is *still* very slow and sluggish. The only thing that seems to be able to get me out of this situation is a battery pull. If I run my application for about 3 hours, the phone starts to become very sluggish. Even simple operations like hitting the "home" button take many seconds. I'm not sure what to do at this point and am wondering where I can go from here.

Android :: Detecting If System Apps Are Running

Oct 11, 2010

We are trying to automate our QA process. We make wallpaper apps for Android. Once an app is installed, is there a way to figure out if the application is running since these have apps don't have a main class which we can check by doing a ps on android shell. I think keyboard/language apps would face a similar issue

For eg. If I install tetris and run it. Its main package will show up in shell ps. xyz.abc.Tetris. But the same is not true system apps in android.

Android :: Bind To System Service

Mar 11, 2010

is it possible somehow to bind to private system services? What I want to do is listen to the activitymanagerservice and be notified when other activites are started. I tried implementing the IActivityController.aidl from the Sourcecode. It has methods like activityStarting and activityResuming but this didn't really work. (I used the idea from here: http://blog.codetastrophe.com/2008/12/accessing-hidden-system-service... , problem is there is no proper private field one could use at least c.getDeclaredFields() doesn't return anything useful from the activity manager)

Any ideas how I can get notified of things going on in the Activity Manager without having to do a getRunningTasks all the time? Because this is the only workaround I came up with but it slows down the phone.

##IActivityController.aidl:...................

Android :: How Do I Get Data From A Running Service?

Aug 21, 2010

I have just started using services in Android and I have a made a simple service that is polling a server every 20 seconds. Now how can I get this data from my main activity (when it is active)? Alternatively the service could send it back do my main activity (but only if its active). I don't want to wake up my activity. I have read SDK examples of "Binding" but I can't find an example how to actually get something from the service. Just how to start and stop the Binding. From the example. If I have the "mBoundService" object in my activity how do I get my data from the service method called eg. "polling Data()"?

Android :: Long Running Service

Jul 27, 2010

I have an app that has a service with it. This service is started the first time you open the app is is suppose to run continuously in the background every two minutes. It seems that at some point though the service stops running or alarmManager stops scheduling/doing what is requested of it. Here is a breakdown of my code flow.

User opens the app,. Service is started, Inside the service I cancel any alarms that might be for this app then create a new one set for two minutes out, Once the alarm is set I call a GPS location check to get lat/lon, I then call up a .net web service to do some stuff with the lat/lon, Once text is returned I check that text for certain Items, If a certain item is found I send a broadcast out to a receiver that then creates a wakelock, starts a new intent to open an activity of my app then sounds an alarm, Right after I broadcast I call stopSelf() as well as calling stopSelf() if the text did not contain certain Items, I call finish() on the new activity I started if we go that far once the Active screen of my app is closed.

The reason I think something is dieing out here is because after some point in time usually once I wake up in the morning and check the phone I no longer see my GPS icon on my droid checking every two minutes.
