HTC Droid Eris :: YouTube Video Quality
Dec 26, 2009How do you correct the poor video quality of YouTube videos on the Eris?
View 4 RepliesHow do you correct the poor video quality of YouTube videos on the Eris?
View 4 RepliesI never watch YouTube videos in anything other than high quality. But the only way I can see to change the quality is via the menu on a per-video basis. It defaults to the lesser quality, which is REALLY crappy!
Is there some way to change the default to play videos in the best quality?
And also, what's to gain by playing them in the lesser quality? Bandwidth? Battery conservation? Load time? For a phone with such a magnificant display size & resolution, I can't imagine why anyone would want to view videos in anything but the best quality possible.
I've noticed that when I'm on my mobile network connection (Orange) the quality of the videos in the youtube app are extremely low. However, when i'm connected to a Wi-Fi connection the video quality is very high.Does anybody know how to change the youtube app settings so that I can keep a high video quality no matter what the connection type?
View 1 Replies View RelatedVery pleased so far. Still need to learn Android. I was wondering is the youtube video quality poor on the EVO or Android in general? I'm so used to my old 3GS that was jail broken, the quality was excellent.
But now they all look so choppy on the EVO.
From our android app I launch Youtube app with the proper video id. This works well across all devices. On Nexus One the youtube app defaults to using low quality video. I have added &fmt=18 in the url (for eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsjadfLYnD4&feature=youtube_gdata&fmt=18 , see this blog for details http://blog.jimmyr.com/High_Quality_on_Youtube_11_2008.php) which should have forced a high quality video but doesn't.Anyone know a work around for this ? The screen resolution on nexus is really beautiful it saddens me that I can't make use of this to play hq videos.

2. I tried watching a trailer on IMDB and it was way too slow and choppy. Is that how any video will be or is there way to improve watching videos from the Internet?
So I have had my Droid Eris for about a week now. The other day I decided to play around on YouTube to see what it was like. Here is the thing though, I have literally found like 1 video that will play. Most of the time I get "This video can not be played". Anyone know why this is?
View 4 Replies View RelatedToday at Sprint store I played the same YouTube video on the Hero and the Pre side by side. The Pre looked great, the Hero had a very low frame rate and poor resolution. I hope someone can tell me something was wrong with the Hero and it is not always like this.I am seriously considering buying a Hero and have been spending a lot of time at my local Sprint story getting to know it. Today I was trying out flash video on many sites and they all looked bad like I described above. I just assumed the videos had a poor source until I tried a YouTube video on the Pre. It is hard to believe all the reviews I have been seeing of the Hero wouldn't have hammered it for this if it were a common problem.
View 19 Replies View RelatedMost of the time when I am trying to watch a video it comes back with an error message "cannot play this video".
Why is this?
Is there something I'm missing? Is there a way to set YouTube to always show videos in high quality without me always having to hit menu, show in high quality for each and every video I want to view?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just read an article about the improved youtube mobile site at m.youtube.com. I have used the youtube app since the ota that was sent out to fix it and downloaded an apk that allowed it to always default to HQ rather than having to change it each time. But I just tried out the mobile site and it is blazingly fast compared to the app. The only thing that would make me not use this over the app is that I didn't see a way to watch the videos in HQ. Am I missing something? Does anyone else have a preference for the mobile site over the app or vice versa?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI wasn't having much luck with the video recording, but saw a thread on how to improve the quality with a few modifications. Thread here: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/39706-higher-quality-video-recording.html. It suggested that I change the bps from 300,000 to 800,000. I couldn't really figure out how to do it, so I never did. I eventually installed the Sholes ROM from the Market and noticed an instant improvement in video quality. I checked my Astro file, (in the system/build file as in the link posted above), and noticed that it is now set to 900,000 bps, rather than 300,000 obviously this was changed automatically by the Sholes ROM. Just another confirmation that the Sholes was a great decision, for me at least. Here's a couple of videos to show the difference. This is a breakfast/storage room and my dog, Riley, who never knows exactly how to behave in front of the camera.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHas anyone else experienced this? I got the dead pixels on the camera after the update as well, but now there seems to be a red tint in video mode and well, the video doesn't seem very "HD" to me.
Here's an example:
YouTube - Test 5
I did not see any other open threads on this; there is a very simple system edit you can perform to record video @ 8 mbps, up from the default 3 mbps. This is from a reliable source. Works very well. Root access is required and, of course, be sure to backup everything before you try anything.
The Droid compresses recorded videos (which results in blurriness and some blocking), so today I started poking around the system files and found this line in build.prop:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=3000000
Which basically means video is compressed at a fixed rate of 3Mbps. I didn't think it would work, but I went ahead and changed the value to 8Mbps:
Code:
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000
Rebooted and shot a test video. Lo and behold, the video is now recorded at 8mbps, resulting in a MUCH crisper image!
To apply the fix, you need root access. Simply edit that line in your /system/build.prop file. You can pull the file from adb, edit it, and push it back, or mount the /system partition as read-write and edit the file with Astro.
Edit: For the more adventurous users, here's another tip: I've been tinkering with the rest of the video settings in build.prop and comparing the resulting videos. So far, the best setting I have found is actually using MPEG-4 SP instead of H.264, 8 Mbps bitrate, and 30 frames per second. The phone chokes at 30 fps in H.264 mode, but does a pretty good job with MPEG-4 SP, and at that bitrate, the image quality is still very good regardless of the codec. The pertinent settings are "ro.media.enc.hprof.codec.vid" for the codec ("h264" for H.264 and "m4v" for MPEG-4 SP) and "ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.fps" (you can choose anything from 1 to 30)
Does anyone know how to set youtube to always run in "high-quality mode"? It will be more confortable to set it once and forget it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI moved from the iphone to the hero and so far things have been great. Now to my question. On my iphone I had jailbroke it and was able to get an app to fool the phone into thinking it was on wifi when using the network data. This resulted in high quality youtube playback like when in wifi at home. Is there an app or a way to get the same thing on the android OS? Been looking around and have yet to find something. On another note. I have two gmail accounts set up on my hero and only get the proper push with one of them. Is this common?
