HTC Droid Eris :: Why Don't Applications Have Close / Exit Option
Apr 4, 2010
Why don't apps on Android have Close/Exit? I never know if an app is truly turned off. Internet is perfect example. If I have navigated down a series of web pages and hit the return button, when I reopen the internet it's on that last page as opposed to the home page.

Why is it that Andoird apps don't have a close or exit. Having to hit the escape key a bunch of thime to exit an application.
In that regard the RIM OS works much better. I knew exactly what was running and what I wanted to close.
It is particularly annoying with the internet app. One has to navigate backwards through as many sites visited for the stupid thing to finally close.

Is there something in the Android developer guidelines that disuades developers from providing the option to "exit" (stop running) an application from within the application itself? I love multitasking and all but it's not clear to me why: the vast majority of apps don't have their own Exit functions and hence just keep running forever don't give you a choice about running when you turn on the phone - they just do by default Both of these things lead to memory usage constantly increasing and your device running with this performance burden all of the time despite the fact that you may only want certain apps to run some of the time.

Anyone else having issues with the phone and a system error message with something about com.htc.provider and it only gives you the option of a "force close" button. Sometimes that is all that happens and once you hit the force close the message goes away, at least for a while. Other times when this happens it deletes all of your text strings. I have 2 lines and 2 droids, both were having the same issue, did the factory resets, went to the store with both and finally gave in and took 2 refurbished phones to try and fix issue, both refurbished phones started doing the same thing immediately. I am in process of arguing with verizon about not wanting another eris to replace these.

Just got the new Droid X. Coming from a windows mobile phone (which I hated) I have a question on the android OS. It seems that when you are done with an app you just have to hit the menu button again.. but this leaves it in memory running.. is there anyway to close the and and just leave it? I did download the Advanced app killer but that seems silly to have to pick from a list of what you want closed.. I see no way to just close the app you are in.. it should be a default option for every app.. I hope I am just not finding it.. and it is there somewhere..

why droid apps don't all come with an exit button. I know you can use the back button to eventually close a program but in so many cases that can mean several taps and in the case of a browser, going back several pages. Using the home button just leave the program running and using resources. It just seems like such an obvious oversight.

the problem is that this button doesn't exit of my app... it simply closes the current intent ant returns to the previous intent (window) of my app.... how i can do a real exit/close button? i tryed with this:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN);
intent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(intent);
but it doesn't works, because when i turn back into my app, the app comes in the last opened window, and not in the first window of the app, how i can do that? i need that when i re-open my app it starts on the first window of my app

Is it possible to stop all started services when the user hits the Home Button? I use:
startService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
stopService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
This means I will have to somehow add the 'stopService()' for 7+ of my app classes
I've researched this topic and I think there's 'onTerminate' but still not sure how this should be implemented.

I know this sounds a bit stupid(!) but is there a 'correct' way to exit applications? If the app doesn't have a specific Exit button, I just click the Home key to get back to the home screen, but when I look in TasKiller, I have quite a few apps still running...

I'm running the Lite official 2.2 ROM. I'm seeing a lot more BS running in the background than I used to on 2.1 (using System Panel Lite). Another thing I noticed is that no matter how I try to exit an app, none of them go inactive. They are all still listed as active. I'm not hitting "home" to back out, I'm actually hitting the back button. I didn't used to see this behavior on 2.1-1. If I backed out of an app (gmail, quadrant, youtube, etc) they went to "inactive".
Now all are listed as active I've had a ton of little quirks with this ROM but I've been working through it. It's almost totally up to what I want except the issues of stuff running I don't start ("Mail", BUA, etc) and stuff not going inactive when not in use. I don't use any ATKs or anything, since I know better. But I don't want to have to constantly kill un-needed apps in System Panel because they're not going inactive like they used to.

Being new to the Android, I was wondering if there is a program out there that will close your application permanently once you're finished with it? I know Task Killer is out there, and use it quite frequently, but I'm noticing that when I get out of DroidLive, Google Maps, etc. they stay running in the back ground and the phone will start to get sluggish.
Also on Bootup the phone boots Facebook and Google Maps. Any way to disable this?

I find the force close Report option very useful as a developer- the stack trace is really useful to see and I've been able to solve many bugs by using it. However, there are places in my app where (quite rightly) I've used a try/catch statement to handle Exceptions. The problem being, that this prevents a force close and so I can't get the data of the error, which would be helpful for bug fixing or even just giving better error messages. Is there any way to report an Exception which has been handled? And which version of Android did the Report option come about in?

I've searched many many times... I followed the instructions (wiped out my sd card) and completely reset the phone to factory settings, put the file on the sd card, Volume down + the Power key and I get the 3 skater androids but no option to install the new os. I have limited time online (pdanet, and am a Truck driver so NO SIGNAL a majority of the time)

Brand new to droid land, and was wondering.yesterday I got a droid 2. from playing with it all day, at the end of the day, it seemed overly sluggish. so, I was wondering ,when I am in an application like the browser, to exit it, I just tap the hooked arrow key on the phone, guess it's like a back button. anyhow, I just tap that until I get back to the home screen. so, if I do that for every application I run, does that mean at the days end, I've got however many apps running in the background?

I've had my Eris since the week it came out and it has the People > Groups > Sync Groups option, however a friend of mine just got an Eris and his phone does not have this option and is syncing ALL of his gmail contacts. His groups screen only has the option to add or delete groups.The only difference I can think is that I did not have Verizon transfer my contacts from my blackberry to my Eris, he did.

Gmail itself receives email perfectly. The problem is when I compose an email, there is no option to add multiple recipients. The HTC mail app has an icon of a "person" next to the recipient (or "to" block). There is no such icon on the gmail app. There is a "to" block but no way to add multiple recipients. I have to manual type in a name (though it does recognize and try and auto finish the name). Am I missing something? Typing each name in for a mass email is a huge pain.

I did a search and didn't find anything recent...is there a program that works with 2.1 that will automatically clear the caches for you instead of having to go into the settings and do them one by one? Also, what does the "clear data" option do?

I am having problems running the youtube app... Whenever it is opened it force closes itself. It was working fine, though now it isn't... I tried clearing the cache and the only thing that helps is a restart, though once Youtube is closed (ATK) then it doesn't boot up all the time. It seems to be random...

I have been running the old leaked version of 2.1 on my phone since the day it was leaked. Today I installed the "new" leak, and now when I restart my phone I get an error saying, "the process com.htc.bg has to close due to an unexpected error." Then it makes me force close the process. My questions are, 1) does anyone know what this process is for? and 2) How do you suggest I fix this issue? Should I re-download from a different mirror? I have already tried re-flashing the zip that I have on my sd card.

I played with the nexus one and you could compose a whole email message by speaking to the phone. I thought this was part of 2.1 for all phones. I can't seem to find this option. I did set up the text to speech, but I think this is different than speech to text.
