Is there an app in the Market for wireless tethering that doesnt require rooting the Droid X?

View 4 Replies View RelatedFinally going to make the root leap on my D1 today.
I have some pretty specific and limited needs and I have been reading EVERYTHING on rooting for the last two weeks and still don't have a clear idea on a few tidbits.
Here is what I hope to achieve by rooting:
1. Wireless wifi tether
2. Improved battery life
3. Eliminate my wifi problems that came with FRG01B OTA
4. Be AT LEAST as smooth and fast as my current setup
5. Be AT LEAST as reliable/bug-free as my current stock Froyo
I am entirely satisfied with the look and feel of my device so I don't NEED to have any themes etc...
I know through research that some ROM's provide easy wifi tethering and some do not. I need one that does since that is my prime requirement.
I am also concerned about the new OTA this week screwing up my root access before or after I root the device.
In reading a bazillion threads everyone keeps saying that each phone is unique in what ROMS/Kernels the phone will "like" which I find quite baffling honestly...but I guess you all know what you are talking about.
I would not even change ROM or kernel if I can achieve my 5 requirements, but from what I see, I do need to change my ROM at the least.
Any recommendations on which ROM's to try? Please note any ROM that does not allow easy wifi tethering is a waste of my time.
I already have ROM Manager, SetCPU and Titanium Backup all queued up on APPBrain for me and I will be pulling the trigger on this today.
I have read all the instructions on rooting the "hard way" and the "easy way" and my time is very valuable so I will use easyroot or the other one...Universal Androot.
This is another "should I root" question, and I apologize in advance. I know this is basic stuff for some of you guys, but I'm on the fence and there are still some things I don't understand about rooting (I'm not a programmer, and while I've run Linux, I've never written anything for it). So I wasn't planning to root. I have no desire to change my notification bar to black, or overly customize my OS. Plus I don't want to brick my phone. That said, at some point I will run out of RAM, and I'll want to save apps to my sd card. I also realize that within months apps may play to 1gz+ phones, and down the line I might want to OC my droid. Finally, tethering might be nice in the future.
The point is, none of these things are necessary now. However after the 2.1 update will rooting be impossible? From what I've read here root was gained by exploiting something in 2.0.1. When that is fixed is it likely root will be gained again? Or should one root now if they want root in 6 months? Are there non-root workarounds to saving apps to sd cards? What about overclocking (I assume not). And if I do root, do I have to choose bugless beast or some other ROM, or can I just stick with what I have?
wireless tether and barnacle wifi tether doesnt work after 2.2 leak.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Moto Droid that will be deactivated shortly. Since I am too cheap to pay the $100/month for voice+data, I was wondering if there's a way I can tether the Droid to my current phone via Bluetooth. Obviously I can't use the Droid to make calls this way, but ideally, all the other data apps and services would work... or at least all of the data services not requiring an active Verizon account. How many of the Droid's data services just need "network connection" versus "a Verizon account"? I would simply swap phones and start using the Droid, but until the Droid can safely shoot underwater video without dying this is a non-starter.

Using a non-rooted Droid, is it possible to tether with Chrome OS?
I know there are ways to tether your non-rooted Droid with Linux/Windows/Mac, but the software required will not run under Chrome OS (for example, one of the Linux solutions requires you have the SDK installed).
What I'm wondering is if I root my phone and tether it with my laptop for Internet will I receive extra charges from verizon?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there ANYTHING I should know? I've been reading this page here How to: Root Android 2.2 for the Motorola DROID - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog and it looks really REALLY simple..
Once I go through ALL that process on that page above would I be able to use a custom rom on my phone and such?
This may not be the appropriate forum for this, but my wife has an upgrade available and I currently have a rooted Droid. We have Verizon and I'd like to make a smart decision about which phone to upgrade her line to. It seems like the Droid X has the best hardware, but with the Fuse issue with the bootloader, is this phone ever going to be as capable as an HTC Droid Incredible, just for an example? Maybe the Incredible is the best Verizon phone, taking root abilities into account. I just don't and I'm looking for opinions from all the experts that know far more about this than me. Do you think the X will overcome the issues outstanding right now?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYou can probably tell by my thread title I am very new to rooting and I think I am very close.
At this point I have downloaded the required motorola driver, sbf file, and have rsd 4.6 on my computer. The issue is rsd does not display my phone. On an earlier version of rsd it did display my phone but I was getting an error so I downloaded 4.6 but now it does not.
Where is the best guide for rooting your droid and is it worth it yet?
no need to flame or i will hunt you down and eat your kids
So I followed these instructions here: Guide to Rooting 2.2 for Windows and Linux
I did the RSD lite to put on the SP Recovery. Rebooted the phone, and it said "Low Battery 0%", I pulled the battery out and booted into the System Recovery. Put on the update.zip file, installed the update, and rebooted. It is still saying "Low battery 0%" and the system keeps force closing. When I try and go back to recovery mode I can't even mount the SD card.
my phone was running really slow. it lost that new phone feel. so i decided that i was going to wipe the phone and start fresh. once, i decided to do that, i then figured why the hell not and rooted the phone.
when i wiped/reset my phone i expected that everything would be gone. i did this by holding "x" and power and then chose to wipe from there. i also chose to wipe the cache partition too. well after i rebooted, i noticed my custom wallpaper and a bunch of applications were still installed on my phone??? the reason i wanted to do this was to get rid of everything and start fresh...but all these apps were still there. did i not wipe the phone correctly?
- next i installed sprecovery on my phone. that went fine.
- i then wiped it again and installed JRummys cyanogen remix 5.0.7.1.
- Right off the bat, my phone is running slower than ever. When exiting from an app by hitting the home screen, sometime i just get a blank screen that sits there for a few seconds before my icons pop up. what gives?.............
After I rooted my DX a week or two ago, I've noticed that whenever I try to use speaker phone, my callers can't hear me at all. They definitely could hear me before rooting...?

My phone is on the newest kernal as of today. 2.1-update1 and kernel version 2.6.29 Is it safe to root? What are the benefits? View 36 Replies View RelatedI've been reading and I've downloaded the ROM Manager from the Marketplace. I've also downloaded a ROM to install. I have tried to boot my phone into recovery mode (pressing X while powering back on) and all I get to is a screen with the exclamation mark and a phone under it.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?
