HTC Droid Eris :: Processed Starting Themselves?
Feb 17, 2010
I looked through another thread that was asking the the same question but i didnt seem to find any answers or solutions, so i decided to revisit the problem has anyone noticed that some applications just seem to start themselves up and run in the background? I have the advanced task killer, and this morning i did a reboot of the phone (coming from blackberry storm1, rebooting is just who i am, i do it every 2-3 weeks) and i would expect some applications to start themselves up on a system startup, no problems there. So i open the ATK and i kill any apps that i know i will not be using anytime soon, which is most of them. anywho, after that i literally dont use my phone at all... i lock it and it has been in my pocket since i left the house. yet, just now, i open up my task killer just to check what is running, and my music, my voice dialer, my calender, and a bunch of other applications are just running... whats up with that?
I have read others saying that the apps running in the background dont take up much memory... i call bs... before i kill the excess apps, i notice my free memory (at top of ATK) is around 30mb. after i kill the apps, im back up to 55mb+ so, please, has anyone found a solution to this problem?

I would like to intercept outgoing calls and pass them to a VOIP application. I see that the Google Voice application has a feature for displaying a question before each call is actually initiated. It provides the user with the choice:
Initiate call via Google Voice
Initiate call via standard call
I would like a way to do something similar with my application (so that not all calls have to be routed through it). At the moment, I can intercept CALL events via a BroadcastReceiver, however, these are not allowed to open dialogs (thus making it possible to display the choice).
What is the best way of achieving this goal?

When I boot my Eris, I have noticed many unneccesary programs open, some in which I never use at all...I found this information in Advanced Task Manager by the way. How do I disable programs from starting up on my Droid Eris?

I loaded ATK onto 2.1 which tells me that more apps are running than the built in proc manager does. So I killed everything except clock. Put the phone to sleep, and came back an hour later to find that Clock, Voice Dialer, MP3 Store, Settings, Shopper, Google Voice, Mail, Messages, chompSMS, and Handcent are all running.
Now, I have sent/received a few texts, so that'd explain the messages, chomp and handcent (still screwing with figuring out which one I want, but only Chomp is set to notify).
This is the third time I've done this today, so can confirm it's no accident. I have never used the MP3 app, don't even have any music on the phone, so no idea why that or for that matter, Voice Dialer, Shopper, or Mail are even running. I've never launched any of them.

When I have listview and I use some listadapter provided by android API then when you touch item in list it flashes with orange colour and then action is processed. If I have my own adapter this flash doesn't happen. Instead text color changes to black for a moment (and becomes unreadable). Is there something special I need to do to enable it? My adapter is actually based on cursoradapter and all it does is that it adds onClick handlers to some of controls used in list item layout and sets values of some widgets which are not handled by simplecursoradapter by default.

I've recently upgraded the Android SDK to the latest version, and I'm trying to re-build the ApiDemos project. I've imported it properly.
The problem is
1. the .aidl files aren't being processed at all by Eclipse during the pre-processing stage.
2. R.java isn't re-generated at all by eclipse
Using Eclipse, Helios release.

I've had my Droid X since launch and been lurking here for awhile, I haven't had any real issues until now though...
Yesterday, my droid x started randomly opening the camera application without anyone or anything even touching the phone. It's maddeningly frustrating. It wakes the phone up when the screen is off, which kills the battery faster, it randomly pops up when I'm web browsing or writing a text. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, was there a fix other than taking the phone back to verizon? I haven't gotten the phone wet or dropped it or anything.

my third biggest use of my Droid is as an MP3 player. I have roughly 9 GB of music on it. I'm using (and enjoying) MixZing (paid). A couple of problems so far, not necessarily anything to do with the app;Years ago I made the Gawd-awful mistake of eagerly ripping my entire CD collection onto my brand new XP OSed laptop-in WMP format!. I knew absolutely nothing at that time, and didn't even have an MP3 player.Well, now I have a rather tremendous chunk of music that is comprised mostly of this collection and about 33% from fragments downloaded off of file sharing programs. These "fragments" are usually in MP3 format, but some idiot has usually altered the tag info, mis-spelling authors, mis-assigning albums, etc, making the tag info nearly useless. All of this makes for one hell of a mess of a music library for MixZing to try to comb through. It won't even display album art for me, but I don't know if it's because most of the music is WMP or because much of the music has screwed up tag data.So I'm starting over, complete, from scratch. I'm dragging out that big ole box of CDs, and I'm going to burn them on my PC, and build my Droid library correctly, from the ground up.

Was just in a thread and Fadelight's response was dead on. There are too many "Help!" "Please help" "What do I do" titled threads that give no clue about the thread content. If you want people to take notice let them know what the thread is about. Yea, eventually I will check out a thread titled "Oh No!" (morbid curiosity) but my first pick is one with a title that catches my interest. This has been a public service announcement. The thread titles have been changed to protect the innocent.

So sometimes I'll go into my contacts and notice that some of them have the green ball lit up telling me that they are online in gtalk. Now I am not signed onto gtalk... but yet somehow I see that in my running services that GTalkService is running.
I can only assume that its eating away battery trying to see how is online and not. I certainly don't need this info unless I wish to go online myself... in which case I would actually go into the gtalk app.
ANyways, obviously i've been killing it in the running services, but it just comes back all on its own. ANy idea why or how to stop it?

So, I've been having issues with my Droid X and downloads in the Market not starting, I've had to do a few data resets to fix the problem. I recently called Verizon complaining and they sent me out a replacement Droid X. The first app that I installed was Launcher Pro and then downloaded quite a few more apps. A few hours later I tried download more apps and they have again gotten stuck on "starting download". I called Verizon tech support and explained what was going on, he then proceeded to tell me that he can guarantee that Launcher Pro is the cause of the problems and that I need to delete it. He claims that it does not work properly with the X. I told him that I got an X on July 1 and did not have a problem with the Market until recently and he again said that LP is causing the problem. Has anyone else heard of this, it makes no sense at all.

"Given that I am in the process of switching from my Sprint HTC Hero over to a Verizon HTC DROID Eris I have been paying more attention lately to accessories for the Eris, one of which was extended batteries. Personally I am not really sure that I need one, but at the same time, a little extra juice is always a welcomed option for a smartphone especially when you are a heavy user. That said, it seems that Seidio has two options available, a 1750mAh and a 3500mAh which are selling for $49.95 and $69.95 respectively. The main difference here, aside from the 3500 offering more juice (and being more expensive) is that the 1750 model was designed to fit with the original battery cover. And that means no extra thickness. The 3500mAh battery on the other hand will add some extra thickness, though its said to only be 3-4mm. The nice part here is that this battery does come with the replacement back cover.

Anyone else starting to see slow down on their Incredible? Not just a little but the loading circle showing up when opening apps or closing them. Sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds for them to just start.I have also had the HTC logo show up when closing stuff (black screen and grey HTC logo) and then the circle.

I've moved over from a Samsung Glyde (aka biggest pos ever) and am so far loving my droid. I'd like to thank everyone that contributed to the app lists/tips/tricks threads. All of it has made moving over to Android so much easier. Really, those kinds of things help us nubs
So far I've only had one real concern with the Droid, and I was wondering if this was unique to my phone, the Droid itself or if its an Android thing.
I downloaded Advance Task Killer as so many have recommended and have noticed that certain apps will simply start themselves running in the background it seems for no other reason than the phone sees the spare memory and fills it up in anticipation that I might run one of them. As you can imagine this is quite frustrating and annoying. Not only does it eat up valuable RAM space but also is eating battery (probably) in the process.
In particular, I notice the Corporate Calender, Voice Dialer, and Visual VM all tend to start themselves up on their own. What's interesting to me about this is I don't even use these applications. In fact, my corporate calendar is not setup, nor have I even opened it once. My phone could be sitting on my desk in sleep mode for an hour and then I'll wake it up and open Task killer to find 10 apps open that I never used.

I am running Eclipse on XP. The Emulator was running correctly but all of sudden today it hang up. I closed Eclipse, rebooted the XP, now when I invoke eclipse, it displays a ddms alert box with the message:
"Failed to initialize monitor thread: Unable to establish loopback connection"
and eclipe prints in its console: [2009-03-17 18:41:46 - DeviceMonitor]Connection attempts: 61
I can start the emulator manually but it's not linked to eclipse and eclipse still gives the same errors.
Why did it stop running and how do I fix it?
