HTC Droid Eris :: Battery Killer - Google Talk Service
May 20, 2010
Thought it would be a prudent thread to list all of the battery killing apps and processes (ie don't shut down right)that have been found in 2.1. The one that I found, the hard way after 3 straight days of only getting 10 hours of battery life, is the Google Talk service. I accidentally opened it and System Panel didn't kill it. I only found it by looking at Battery Uses>Running Services.

Before I updated the leaked 2.1 v3, I used to have an app called Google Talk that would allow me to chat with google contacts. Now, I can't seem to find it anywhere both on the phone or online? The closest I could find is google services which goes through the Dolphin browser - clumsy in my opinion.

I just recently started using google talk because I wanted something quicker than SMS. I made my girlfriend a gmail account so we could use that rather than text, but I can't seem to figure out how to sync the google talk contact to her. I added her gmail account to her contact card but on google talk she's still coming up as a separate contact.

Google talk service starts running as soon as the phone is on, even though the app is closed (with ATK). Anyone know how to prevent it from starting up with the phone? I dont really use gchat on the phone so I dont want it to run unless i open up the app.The same occurs with google voice (which i only have set up for voicemail). This one I dont care too much if its on since at least its useful for voicemail.

Anyone else having issues with Google Talk on the Droid Eris? I can open the application, however my friends list is gone and I can't receive or send any messages. I went into the application manager and cleared the app data, and also power cycled the phone. Any other suggestions? I doesn't appear i can delete and re-download.

My status on Google Talk never changes despite the fact that I have the settings checked in settings to "go to away when I turn off the screen" as well as "show mobile indicator to friends". This wasn't functional in 1.5, 2.1v1 and now 2.1v3 on my Eris. Has anyone had success? I've seen this function work on a TMobile rooted G1 but that's it.
I can watch the indicator change on the web when I change it manually (signed in as another user), and its very responsive. However, no auto-away when i lock the phone, and no indication that I'm on a mobile phone.

Ive been reading this forum for several months, and bought my Eris last month (previous Blackberry Storm owner). With my Blackberry, I was used to having Blackberry Messenger service that allowed me to message other BB owners, without using my SMS/MMS count with Verizion. Without that, I have set up Google Talk as an alternative.
Pardon me asking something here that everyone else proabably already knows, but does the Google Talk messages get counted as SMS/MMS messages by Verizon ? I do not use it except to message one of my friends from time to time, so I am fairly ignorant about the various types of 'chat' messaging systems out there.
Thanks for your help, and I am enjoying everything that this Eris can do so far. I was a bit leery at making the switch, but I can see Android systems are a good way to go.

Ok, so im not really as concerned about overclocking the CPU, but since the phone is basically a computer. I am curious if anyone knows how to undervolt the CPU? This can easily be done on laptops with the help of apps like rightmark CPU. Basically you keep the clock speed the same (or overclock it) but you reduce the voltage at each cpu cycle. You do this on a laptop with an application such as rightmark and you continue to undervolt until your system crashes. Which basically means your CPU has become unstable. Then you raise the voltage a few notches back up to the point before the crash and run it for a few days.why would anyone care? Well the effect is you keep the same speed (or faster) BUT you use less energy.... which means longer battery times. I've undervalued the last 3 laptops I've had two half the voltage. Now my hunt begins for an undervolt app for Android. The semiconductor manufactures leave a "generic" setting. But, each piece of silicon is different, and came from relatively different parts of a wafer. So some parts can hold up to less voltage without becoming unstable. Hence why one cpu can be undervalued dramatically and others (of the exact same chip set) can barely get undervalued without crashing right away. This is why they leave it at a generic safer voltage.

When i check my battery usage its saying that Maps has been using 90 percent of the battery. Its been doing this the last couple days even with me charging it at night. I didnt use maps at all today and its not showing up in my app manager as running, or a newly downloaded task killer. Its not really affecting my battery life which is weird and doesnt make sense. So i was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem(sorta more like inconvienence)?

I did some testing with the Navigator yesterday and I have to say it's absolutely awesome. I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, couldn't find any mention of it, but I want to share my battery usage experience with it as well as some other cool things I noticed.
Very cool battery saver:
I used it for a 15-minute drive, keeping it only in the Notification Bar. When you are in the Navigation app, you can press the Home softkey to go back to your home screen. This keeps Navigator working in the background, but it is not drawing the maps and using the screen. You can press the Power button to put your phone to sleep, and the voice actually still talks to you and tells you when to turn. And even better, I started this trip with 76% battery and ended with 76% battery.
Now, the not-so-cool.
I used it for a 30-minute drive, keeping the screen on and letting it show me the map the entire way. I started the drive with 54% battery ended with 34% battery. So definitely keep it on the charger if you are using it for a long drive. But another awesome thing I noticed. I made a phone call toward the end of my destination, just to see what would happen. I used the Home key to back out of the Navigator (but keeping it in the background, as I said above), then made my call as normal. The Navigator still gave me directions while I was on the phone. It came through the earpiece now, so the other person doesn't hear it. How freaking cool is that?

Google Maps is taking up all of my battery life after using navigation. I've tried backing out instead of using home when on Maps. I always use 'Exit Navigation' when closing Navigation. I've tried killing the task. The only thing that has worked is restarting the phone.

So, like many of you, my phone would occasionally get hot, and the battery would just zoom down to nothing. Usually this was just intermittent, and a restart would cure it.On June 10, it was happening, and persisted despite restarts, battery pulls, etc. I finally found that the problem was google trying to sync contacts. It was having some problem and cycling forever. When I unchecked the google contacts sync in the accounts preference panel, problem stopped. My battery life has never been better. Routinely getting 18-20 hrs or more.BUT I want to sync my google contacts! Every time I trial re-checking that box, it cycles and cycles, every few seconds giving a little error at the bottome of the screen (in prefs) "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly".I have 700-something contacts (Only 250 real "My Contacts" but another 500 or so auto-created contacts from gmail use.Presumably one of those entries has some corruption, but I can't figure out which, and I don't want to potentially lose all the contacts.I have seen that for some people this was fixed by factory reset and resync, but then the problem came back a few weeks later.

Is anybody else having a problem with google talk and receiving a "[somebody] did not receive your chat" message whenever you try to IM somebody? It happens both on my Droid and in the chat client in gmail. The reason I'm asking here is that it only seems to be affecting my buddy and me and we both have Droids. Our friends who don't have droids can talk to one-another, but any message to or from us have issues. Could be coincidence but I thought I'd ask.

So, not much of a Google Talk user, but now and then. And, I mostly use it via my desktop gMail app.. not on my phone.
Anyway, I close out the Talk app, but no matter what, even if it is closed, killed, off, it activates itself when someone sends me a chat.. even if I am logged on via my gMail account.
How the heck can you shut it off? What is it that makes it start up because someone wants to chat. I see no way to stop it and I am not always in the mood or able to chat and do not want to be disturbed but this Google Talk seems to start up and alert you anyway.
