HTC Desire :: Apps Restart After Standby Notification Preparing SD Card
Nov 1, 2010
Android Version: 2.2
Network: Telstra NextG
Taskiller Used?: Advanced Task Cleaner installed but not normally used to kill/FC
Are You rooted & which Rom: no - stock
I recently updated my Desire to 2.2 (stock Telstra update) and quickly moved some apps to the SD card to free up some phone storage. Since then I've noticed that after longer periods on standby (definitely hours - haven't worked out the lower limit yet), when I wake the Desire it notifies 'Preparing SD Card' and all the apps appear to have closed. By the apps having closed I mean the weather widget has to load, my Agenda/schedule widget has to load, my Dolphin HD browser starts afresh, etc. I had moved Dolphin to the SD card but not the widgets. The experience is kind of like after startup, so i'm presuming its all apps, but it may not be all - its certainly more than just the apps on SD.
To be clear, the SD card does mount fine, and I've had no other indications of SD card problems before or after the Froyo upgrade. I've seen reference to partitioning the SD card, but am not sure why I would do it or if it is relevant here. Is this a known problem with moving apps to the SD card, or is it a known problem with the Desire 2.2 update? Is it just me?

ive had this phone for 5 days, after switching from an iphone. its seems great but i found a trick which was Turning on USB Debugging mode after i found it was behaving quite laggy today. But since doing this the phone when turned completely off and turned back on again doesnt boot up as quick as when i first got it. It goes to a htc logo. then loads another htc logo, does the jingle, then says preparing the sd card, a limited services message comes up and then the phone loads up

Recently upgraded to Froyo, which is when this problem started occurring. After removing the charger, the Desire notifies that it is Preparing SD Card (in other words mounting it). This means Apps2SD is a no go, as it stops any app installed this way, when is mounts the SD card.

I've been using a Task killer without problem since I got the Desire but since yesterday when reading through one of the threads on here and downloading a load of stuff the Task Killer has started behaving badly, I've tried two different Task Killers and they're both doing the same.
When killing some apps the screen seems to restart, like it killed the Sense UI but I've put all the system processes on the ignore list.

I'm new to the forum and I'm hoping someone can help me out. My BH2 is stock not hacked or anything and the first time I had it, I used the USB cable to transfer songs onto my SD card. Now when I tried it again, I connected the USB and it's in charging mode and I went into the notification menu to mount the SD card, it says preparing external SD card but then it stops and does not connect to my PC. Also the PC cannot detect any device connected to it.

I am using a SanDisk 8bg sd card in my Moment, but whenever I activate the camera, it just says "Preparing Sd card..." and just sits there. I can take videos, but soon as I slide the switch to still camera mode, the message comes up again.

Since I got my 16 GB Card it's started saying it for longer than with my 2GB Card, however it says it less now. Does how long it takes depend on how much data you put on since taking it out of USB Mode? Because when I first got this card I wrote a lot to it (Moving all my files over), but now I just put a few files here and there on... Is there a way to disable this and let you run it manually at your leisure?

when I tried to use my camera it has the message "preparing sd card" and never lets me use the camera. I can switch to camcorder mode and that works just fine but whenever i switch back to camera mode i get the preparing sd card message. My first thought was that the card was somehow corrupt, but I am able to play mp3s and watch videos from the card with no issues. I also opened astro and navigated to the DCIMcamera folder and i am able to view the pictures in the gallery that i've taken with the default viewer. when i'm in camera mode and try to view the gallery it just says no media found. I have tried rebooting and pulling both the battery and sd card, putting everything back in and powering back up, but it still does the same thing. Anyone ever seen this or have any other advice on a possible fix?

I have updated my contacts and Google Calendar in preparation for the Captivate. Anxious to get going. I have spent quite a few hours reviewing one 13 page thread of 'favorite apps', and put together a list that I interest in looking at. I have some searching to do for some things that didn't come up. Priorities are good Calendaring; Easy use of voice for calling contacts; Financial Software to track stocks. Many other things of interest. Here is what I probably will be installing for sure some time fairly quickly (not all of my interests are met in this list): NOTE: The links may take you to a descriptive site, or may take you to a review..............

I have a none branded/unlocked Desire with firmware version 2.10.405.2, now, there used to be an option in older firmware versions, how old i can't remeber, to enable a sound notification for SD Card events, such as unmounting, mounting, etc, but this option seems to have been removed, at least on my phone, could someone please take a look through thier phone settings and confirm if this option is there, or not, i used to enable this option when connecting to the PC so i would know when the SD Card had unmounted/mounted.

Running Froyo on my Desire. Have forced almost all my app's onto SD, apart from ones that run in background and update data. Still getting the annoying "low on memory" notification. Q. Is there a way to see exactly what applications are taking up the available memory space?

I sent an email to HTC's Customer Services:-
"The HTC Desire appears to have "limited memory capacity" of around 570Mb RAM and 512Mb ROM. The MicroSD card can hold up to 32Gb. So, why can't you (HTC) allow apps be stored in MicroSD card? If you or Google are concerned about piracy issues, i.e. copies of apps from microSD card to another microSD card, etc., there is one way round to this problem. You and/or Google could consider installing some kind of unique crypto-key within the Desire's ROM (perhaps IMEI or Serial number on each phone?), and any apps saved to the microSD card would be automatically encrypted "on-the-fly" with this crypto-key. When apps are accessed, it is decrypted on-the-fly, as well. In other words, apps will ONLY work with THAT phone as it shares the SAME crypto-key. Putting a microSD card containing apps into another Android phone (even if it is of the same model) WOULD NOT WORK, thus solving the piracy issue? Therefore, would you PLEASE consider allowing apps to microSD card (as much as 32Gb card) and BEAT iPhone/Nokia N900 at their own game! Many thanks."
This is HTC's response (received today (6/April/2010):
"The reason that it is not possible to save applications to the SD card is due to limitations in the underlying Linux operating system in that it requires a filesystem that supports Linux permissions and FAT32 doesn't. The SD card is fomratted with FAT32 to provide compatibility with as many
platforms as possible. Thhis restriction is not due to us but rather a limit that is imposed on Android devices from all manufacturers.

When my phone goes into standby (is that the same as sleep mode, BTW?) is it still connected tothe internet ? If not is there a setting that will automatically disable it (I don't mind manually re-connecting it again)?
I don't have anything auto-synching, so I don't need to be connected while I'm not actually using it. (Just thinking of ways of saving valuable juice )

So I updated by phone to android 2.2, and am having problems putting apps to the SD card. I have used ROM Manager to set a partition, and used App 2 SD to copy the Apps over, but it always fails. So I put a diffrent ROM on, and it does the same thing. So I decided it was time to get a bigger SD card anyway, so while I wait for it to arrive, I thought I would ask, is there anything I should do to either my phone, or the SD card before I put it in my phone or anything I should do to prepare it so I can get apps on my SD Card.
In my root settings (I think its root then you turn phone on and press the down button), in the partition section there what should the settings be? Also as I'm getting a 16gig card, having read bits on here by helpful posters who say I need to partition it to be 256 with a 0 swap file, as I will have more space, can I/should i increase this, and should I put a value for the swap file (what does this do?).

I just got my Desire on Monday at US Cellular and I will admit I didn't do much research I just took the word of some friends that have been droid guys for a while. I am pretty disappointed that I have run out of internal space and I don't even have a tenth of the apps I was hoping to get. Is there a way I can download them to the SD card without rooting my phone or waiting for the froyo update?

Due to overwhelming user complaints I have decided try allowing users of my Android application to move it to the SD card as per the official documentation. However, a core feature of my application requires a background service to be continuously running. When someone who has moved my app to their SD card mounts their SD card for whatever reason, my background service will be killed.
That's all okay by me, as long as I can restart the service at the first available opportunity. Unfortunately, despite the install-location guide claiming I can use the Broadcast Intent ACTION_EXTERNAL_APPLICATIONS_AVAILABLE to detect when the SD card is remounted locally, the documentation for that flag itself, this newsgroup discussion, and my own testing show that this broadcast is not delivered to the applications which become available. Only applications which have not been moved to the SD card get the Broadcast Intent. Is there any way to restart my background service without waiting for the user to open my app after the SD card is remounted?

A friend of mine wanted to buy the HTC Desire 310 and so I did a little research. On amazon I read from several people that it is impossible to move apps to the SD card. Is this true? If yes, the option to put in an SD card up to 64GB wouldn't make much sense (only for media), would it?

I also have an app appearing twice in the menu when i install it. Removing and reinstalling causes the same. Also, how do i delete footprints and Google talk?

This morning I went into market and saw that 4 apps needed updating, 2 of the apps were on my SD card.
The 2 apps not on SD updated fine but the 2 on SD card forced Marketplace to FC. When I went back into Market the apps were in the process of updating and seemed to update and run.
However after rebooting the phone the apps were no longer installed.
It was at this point that I noticed Market had been upgraded to 2.12.
I tried installing the apps again, which succeeded but when I tried moving them to SD card it failed. I had to uninstall/reinstall the apps again and I was then allowed to copy them to the SD card.
I have now done a clear data and clear cache on market to see if that helps.
All my other apps are fine both on and off the SD card and I used to be able to update them on SD card with no problems.
Until I get another update for an app on SD I cannot be sure the problem is resolved but it does appear that 2.12 managed to break something.

I kill amazon and it stays dead for sometime i cant kill smart keyboard pro it restarts it self straight away.I have had the phone on charge for about 6h now and the battery seams stuck half way and don't relay increase or its increasing very slowly.

Loving my DHD, using for 5 days now.
I do have a problem/query which I can't find an answer for.
My screen goes dim after 10 seconds of no use and then a few seconds later turns off and locks the phones.
How can i extend this - when reading from the web, it takes me longer than 10 seconds to read stuff but I have to keep touching the screen.

I've had my HTC Desire for about 2 weeks. I have searched through the forums for info...but between threads getting off track or just not understanding anything, I thought it would be easier to ask basic questions about my particular issues.
1) What is root? I have the 2.2 update, I am happy enough with HTC and my carrier (Telus) and I don't need tonnes of room right now.
2) Speaking of room, I try to put my apps on my SD card with the 2.2 update but only Google Earth and Night Sky are able to do it. All of my icon packs etc. wont go to SD. I'm pretty sure I have lots of room left so I dont think this is a huge issue.
3) Battery issues. I didn't do the first full charge as I had to use the phone asap when I bought it. I don't have much going on with my phone, no active wallpapers, just weather toggle and clock, text and a few phone calls, check a couple websites, maybe a video here and there, and sometime use GPS for maps. I keep my screen on zero percent and I soft touch the power button to go black screen when i'm idle. I turn off gps and wifi when not using them. With that said, I cant keep the phone idle and off charge overnight without it going to zero. After a charge I lose 10-20% in the first hour. I have never lasted a day on a full charge.
4) After playing around with customizing my phone with icons and widgets I am done. All I need this phone to do is make phones calls, text and check my favorite websites. I use my tracks when I go running and listen to music when I run. Thats all I want it to do. Its a phone so I would love if it could keep a charge in case of an emergency. I was late for dinner the other night because my battery died and I couldn't even call to say I was late! so....
5) What do you recommend I do with my phone to keep it as basic as possible and powered up?
6) What are the key apps to make this the best user experience?
7) When in my pocket I lock screen but once I found that I had 23 unsuccessful attempts to open screen from jiggling around in my pocket lol. Is there anything to help me with that?
