HTC Desire :: Downloading Apps To The SD Card
Nov 5, 2010
I just got my Desire on Monday at US Cellular and I will admit I didn't do much research I just took the word of some friends that have been droid guys for a while. I am pretty disappointed that I have run out of internal space and I don't even have a tenth of the apps I was hoping to get. Is there a way I can download them to the SD card without rooting my phone or waiting for the froyo update?

A friend got a Desire yesterday and is having a rather odd problem with it - she put the power control widget on one of the screens, set the news feed to the BBC, and then downloaded a couple of apps (angry birds etc). When she downloaded these the powercontrol widget disappeared and the news feed 'unset' itself from the BBC.Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening or how to stop it?

My phone is telling me my internal storage is nearly full, whereas I have a 4gb microsd card which is not being used.
How do I move my applications to the SD card (or how do I have my apps automatically install there in the future)

I sent an email to HTC's Customer Services:-
"The HTC Desire appears to have "limited memory capacity" of around 570Mb RAM and 512Mb ROM. The MicroSD card can hold up to 32Gb. So, why can't you (HTC) allow apps be stored in MicroSD card? If you or Google are concerned about piracy issues, i.e. copies of apps from microSD card to another microSD card, etc., there is one way round to this problem. You and/or Google could consider installing some kind of unique crypto-key within the Desire's ROM (perhaps IMEI or Serial number on each phone?), and any apps saved to the microSD card would be automatically encrypted "on-the-fly" with this crypto-key. When apps are accessed, it is decrypted on-the-fly, as well. In other words, apps will ONLY work with THAT phone as it shares the SAME crypto-key. Putting a microSD card containing apps into another Android phone (even if it is of the same model) WOULD NOT WORK, thus solving the piracy issue? Therefore, would you PLEASE consider allowing apps to microSD card (as much as 32Gb card) and BEAT iPhone/Nokia N900 at their own game! Many thanks."
This is HTC's response (received today (6/April/2010):
"The reason that it is not possible to save applications to the SD card is due to limitations in the underlying Linux operating system in that it requires a filesystem that supports Linux permissions and FAT32 doesn't. The SD card is fomratted with FAT32 to provide compatibility with as many
platforms as possible. Thhis restriction is not due to us but rather a limit that is imposed on Android devices from all manufacturers.

So I updated by phone to android 2.2, and am having problems putting apps to the SD card. I have used ROM Manager to set a partition, and used App 2 SD to copy the Apps over, but it always fails. So I put a diffrent ROM on, and it does the same thing. So I decided it was time to get a bigger SD card anyway, so while I wait for it to arrive, I thought I would ask, is there anything I should do to either my phone, or the SD card before I put it in my phone or anything I should do to prepare it so I can get apps on my SD Card.
In my root settings (I think its root then you turn phone on and press the down button), in the partition section there what should the settings be? Also as I'm getting a 16gig card, having read bits on here by helpful posters who say I need to partition it to be 256 with a 0 swap file, as I will have more space, can I/should i increase this, and should I put a value for the swap file (what does this do?).

A friend of mine wanted to buy the HTC Desire 310 and so I did a little research. On amazon I read from several people that it is impossible to move apps to the SD card. Is this true? If yes, the option to put in an SD card up to 64GB wouldn't make much sense (only for media), would it?

I restored my apps but any new apps I download are saved on phone memory not SD. I have downloaded root explorer, but I don't know how to move apps or set default to save to card. Anyone know? I also have an app appearing twice in the menu when i install it. Removing and reinstalling causes the same. Also, how do i delete footprints and Google talk?

This morning I went into market and saw that 4 apps needed updating, 2 of the apps were on my SD card.
The 2 apps not on SD updated fine but the 2 on SD card forced Marketplace to FC. When I went back into Market the apps were in the process of updating and seemed to update and run.
However after rebooting the phone the apps were no longer installed.
It was at this point that I noticed Market had been upgraded to 2.12.
I tried installing the apps again, which succeeded but when I tried moving them to SD card it failed. I had to uninstall/reinstall the apps again and I was then allowed to copy them to the SD card.
I have now done a clear data and clear cache on market to see if that helps.
All my other apps are fine both on and off the SD card and I used to be able to update them on SD card with no problems.
Until I get another update for an app on SD I cannot be sure the problem is resolved but it does appear that 2.12 managed to break something.

Android Version: 2.2
Network: Telstra NextG
Taskiller Used?: Advanced Task Cleaner installed but not normally used to kill/FC
Are You rooted & which Rom: no - stock
I recently updated my Desire to 2.2 (stock Telstra update) and quickly moved some apps to the SD card to free up some phone storage. Since then I've noticed that after longer periods on standby (definitely hours - haven't worked out the lower limit yet), when I wake the Desire it notifies 'Preparing SD Card' and all the apps appear to have closed. By the apps having closed I mean the weather widget has to load, my Agenda/schedule widget has to load, my Dolphin HD browser starts afresh, etc. I had moved Dolphin to the SD card but not the widgets. The experience is kind of like after startup, so i'm presuming its all apps, but it may not be all - its certainly more than just the apps on SD.
To be clear, the SD card does mount fine, and I've had no other indications of SD card problems before or after the Froyo upgrade. I've seen reference to partitioning the SD card, but am not sure why I would do it or if it is relevant here. Is this a known problem with moving apps to the SD card, or is it a known problem with the Desire 2.2 update? Is it just me?

I've had my HTC Desire for about 2 weeks. I have searched through the forums for info...but between threads getting off track or just not understanding anything, I thought it would be easier to ask basic questions about my particular issues.
1) What is root? I have the 2.2 update, I am happy enough with HTC and my carrier (Telus) and I don't need tonnes of room right now.
2) Speaking of room, I try to put my apps on my SD card with the 2.2 update but only Google Earth and Night Sky are able to do it. All of my icon packs etc. wont go to SD. I'm pretty sure I have lots of room left so I dont think this is a huge issue.
3) Battery issues. I didn't do the first full charge as I had to use the phone asap when I bought it. I don't have much going on with my phone, no active wallpapers, just weather toggle and clock, text and a few phone calls, check a couple websites, maybe a video here and there, and sometime use GPS for maps. I keep my screen on zero percent and I soft touch the power button to go black screen when i'm idle. I turn off gps and wifi when not using them. With that said, I cant keep the phone idle and off charge overnight without it going to zero. After a charge I lose 10-20% in the first hour. I have never lasted a day on a full charge.
4) After playing around with customizing my phone with icons and widgets I am done. All I need this phone to do is make phones calls, text and check my favorite websites. I use my tracks when I go running and listen to music when I run. Thats all I want it to do. Its a phone so I would love if it could keep a charge in case of an emergency. I was late for dinner the other night because my battery died and I couldn't even call to say I was late! so....
5) What do you recommend I do with my phone to keep it as basic as possible and powered up?
6) What are the key apps to make this the best user experience?
7) When in my pocket I lock screen but once I found that I had 23 unsuccessful attempts to open screen from jiggling around in my pocket lol. Is there anything to help me with that?

So i rooted my phone this morning. Used the unprovoked to do this. I am not too technical so i needed an easy way to do this otherwise i might have bricked my phone.
Okay so now that i have rooted it i have the following questions:
1) i want to be able to save apps to my SD card (not on froyo yet) - i am not keen on these customized Roms and prefer something more standard what should i do?
2) how do i change the font on my phone
3) what else should i consider doing since i have rooted
With all of the above, hopefully they are easy to follow, as i mentioned i am not too technical.

I created a separate project and activity that downloads an image from a URL, converts it to a Bitmap, and then uses a FileOutputStream to save that file to the SD card. When in the separate project and free-standing activity, this worked fine, and I could see that the image is stored on the SD card. public class PictureDownload extends Activity {
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
downloadFromUrl("http://www.coutblog.com/prism/uploads/0030.jpg", "newpic.jpg");
displayPic("newpic.jpg");............

HTC Hero: Rooted with 2.1 and previously running absolutely fine but for some reason today I'm not able to save/download anything.
I tried to download a picture off the internet and it was saying there was not enough space (even though the phone memory has 122mb free thanks to Apps2SD and my SD card has over 3GB free) so I tried to email the picture from my PC, received on my phone and when I try to download the picture it says you need an SD card to do this... but the card IS being seen by the phone because my apps are running, I can access music and pictures that are on it.
I unmounted the card and then remounted it and my phone went into a loop, trying to reinitialise and couldn't do it. So I just restarted the phone and, again, all apps work but cannot save or download anything.
I'm trying to avoid wiping everything and starting from scratch but seeing as I've been meaning to move to 2.2 I think it might be an idea...
Deffo seems to just be an SD card problem, had an old MMS message, tried to save it and it wouldn't worked. Used the SaveMMS app and that brought up a long error string which basically pointed to a problem with the SD card. What confuses me though is that I can still read from it (playing music) and I just deleted a couple of pictures off it which surely constitutes editing?

I'm developing an Android game that has to download some assets to the SD card to keep the size of the app as small as possible. I was thinking of using an uncompressed zip file to bundle all the assets.
A requirement from the client is to protect these assets as much as possible. Being part of the apk is considered enough protection, but if I do this the apk size will be enormous. If I just put a zip bundle in the SD card, then anyone can unzip it and explore its contents.
Is there a simple way to do this without retorting to horrid DRM?

I am trying to download a ringtone onto my phone (which apparently gets downloaded to my sd card under download) but its saying I have no available space. Its a 2 gig mem card and i have 1.7 gigs left on it thats completely free. And my phone has 99mb of internal memory free. So a few hundred kb ringtone should not be saying this.

All of a sudden, yesterday, my apps won't download or update! I hit the update button (or download) and it exits me back into the home of the market place, and I wait. I wait. And I wait. Nothing. I look back on the page and it is stuck on "Starting download..." Also, the "Google Talk" solution won't work for me - Talk just exits back to the home screens when I touch the icon.

Just like the topic says. I had Froyo Android 2.2 and did do a successful download to android 2.1 and everything works but the market. Occasionally it will download a app or two but then it just gets stuck and never will download anything. I'm guessing this has something to do with being on 2.2 then downgrading to 2.1. It is a google server issue or something on my phone?
