HTC Desire :: Low Phone Storage / Partitioning Sd Card
Aug 15, 2010
I rooted a few weeks back and very happy with everything apart from I keep getting low on space notification for my phone storage, when I rooted I didn't bother with partitioning my sd card as read about Mod Install Location which basically forces apps to be installed onto the sd card and didn't think I would need to install anything on my internal storage but it seems I keep getting low storage notification. So I am assuming some of the apps I install have to use a little bit of the internal memory? I used Cache Mate and checked all the apps etc. So considering doing the partitioning to trick my phone to think it has more space but wondering will I lose everything or have to back it up? Or any other tips to free up internal space as it seems ROM I am using (neophyte 1.6) didn't free up much space.

I've been reading up on partitioning my SD Card for the Apps 2 SD functionality. Few n00b questions to clear up if I can! 1) Once partitioned, I believe that all app data will be able to be installed on the SD, as opposed to leaving a few hundred KB's on the internal? If I make a direct copy of all SD Card contents, partition the SD, and copy back, will the App's still appear 'as normal', or is a fresh backup/install required? 2) If the answer to the first question is that I CAN simply copy back to the SD, can I then use the "Move to Phone" and "Move to SD Card" options to move ALL of the app data, including the original few hundred KB's originally on internal? Feel like a douche asking these just can't quite get my head around it trawling through the other threads.

I'm having a nightmare and really need some help from someone a bit more savvy than me. I've been looking at various threads and cant make my arse from my elbow. I seriously have tried guys and not just being lazy. So, I've bought a new SD card and I want to use apps2sd+ which is built into the LeeDroid rom that I have managed to flash using ClockworkMod Recovery. The problem I have is making a partition on my card. I've downloaded Rom Manager but when it goes to do its stuff, it reboots with an exclamation mark and a droid. What/where am I doing or going wrong?

So I've tried and tried again using RA and other linux based programs (GParted) to get my 8GB card to partition for apps2sd. Everything always runs smoothly and shows that the card is partitioned correctly. But then upon reboot the SD card shows full fat32 memory (6.9 GB). No matter what I do, after reboot, the partitions never happen. When I used GParted, and then loaded the SD card on the phone it always says that the SD card is damaged and I need to reformat. I've done that and rerun everything to no avail. Someone please tell me this issue is that the SD card is corrupted and I should give up. Because I've followed everything to a T as far as partitioning. With that I'll say that I had no problems rooting my phone, flashing ROM's/RA's, etc, and have been able to do whatever I want as far as new things to load. I've finally decided after all this time to do apps2sd, and I literally screwed around for 5+ hrs today, trying to partition the SD card properly. Any thoughts?

I successfully rooted my Samsung Galaxy Blaze phone, installed Titanium BackUp and now would like to send my app data to my nice 16GB SDHC card. The problem is, I can't get it partitioned probably because my laptop's card reader can't really read SDHC cards, even in adapters. It recognizes that the card is there, but then wants to format it and won't format it. I tried using the Mini Tools Partition Wizard, but each attempt failed, claiming I had a bad card. The card works beautifully in the phone, so I don't think that's the problem, especially since brand new cards get the same reaction.
Is there a way to partition the card from my phone? I have good reason to believe that my memory problems have a lot to do with the boatload of email I have saved in GMail, or the fact that Google+ somehow decided I really needed *all* of my photos on my phone, via Picasa (another source of angst and muttering).

I used ROM Manager to Partition my SD card (I have clockwork recovery latest version), I select 512 for EXT and 32 for Swap. Phone reboots and when I check the file manager on my SD card, it reads my SD card has 7069M left. Is it partitioned? if so how can I make my apps Run off of it? If it is, NOW WHAT? How do I use it to actually install Apps on it and Make my Phone faster?

I'm making a partition on my (clean) micro SD card to use to increase my phone's internal storage. The intent was to go from 200 or so MB to 8 GB, because some apps can't be moved to the SD card and must be on the phone's storage. My question is, can I give the partition a certain format (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, Unformatted, etc.) and have it work, or is there more I need to do?

Can someone help me with partition my SD card? I have APPS2SD installed but it wont partition it, neither will ROM Manager. I have Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.4. If it can be done with just the phone I'd prefer that method, then the Ubuntu method, then Windows (i hate the command prompt in Win).

I have used partitions on my old rooted phone where I thought the sd card had crashed because of partitioning it. Now I have removed the partition and I am still getting problems. Then I formatted my whole micro sd card using windows.
Whenever I insert my sd card into windows via my phone, it asks me to format it. Why has micro sd partitioning wrecked my sd card???!!

i have a question re the whole process. i used unrevoked to root my desire n used adamg's froyo sense w/o partitioning d sd card. upon boot up to the rom, i noticed that the internal storage has the same storage space left of about only 20mb which is basically the same as with the original rom. i now used rom manager n partioned my sd card 512mb for both ext n swap file. n upon restarting, it now has an internal mem of more than 120mb.
1. Are my partitioning settings correct? 512mb for both ext and swap files? If not, what should be the ideal setings and can please someone explain what ext n swap files are and what they are for?
2. Since I partitioned the drive 'after' installing the froyo sense by adamg, do i need to reflash the rom again?
3. I noticed that after installing a number of apps from Market, it comes to a point that it's stuck at 'starting to download' only after i deleted some other apps do i notice that i can download addtl apps again. is this because of the method i did in installing the new rom?

When I look at the settings and "SD card and phone storage" option I see the different types of storage. Based on what I see, please verify the following assumptions are correct. The external SD card is obviously the one I added. I assume it can be used to store media files (via USB, direct write on a PC, etc.). I read until Froyo we won't be able to install apps on this card.
The internal SD card is what is built into the phone for apps and other things those apps write to the phone.
Looks like Google Listen writes to this area (can't make it write to the external SD and not sure why). It appears that the only things writing to there are my camera and of course any music, pics, or videos I load on there directly. Nothing else seems to make use of it. The internal phone storage is for things like the OS and is pretty much off limits. When I go into the "My Files" app on the phone it dumps me into the home directory which happens to be /sdcard. I assume this is the internal SD card? Under that directory it also has "/sd" which appears to be my external SD card. Why would they make it look like "/sd" is a subdirectory of "/sdcard" when it's not?

I am becoming sick of the Incredible's stock player, mainly because of its poor shuffle mode. I have looked at apps like MixZing, Cubed, and DoubleTwist, but these all seem like they won't play music from both the sd card and internal phone storage like the stock player. Are there any players that will do this, and perhaps find album art like the others?

I recently changed the storage location on my Incredible's camera from Phone Storage to Storage Card (i.e., my SD card). Yesterday I decided to move the previsouly taken photos "IMAG*.jpg" from the phone storage to the SD card and used the Astro app to perform this move. I made the mistake of using "move" rather than "copy-paste". Something went wrong and somehow none of the "imag*.jpg" that were previously on my phone's internal storage are neither there nor on the SD card.
Where could these files have disappeared to? Is there a "Trash" folder in Android like in Windows where these jpg files could be still hidden? Anyway to recover them? Using the search feature on Astro didn't reveal any of the newly disappeared jpg files.
Here's what I did using the Astro app:
step 1: navigated to /emmc/DCIM/100MEDIA
step 2: clicked on multi and selected all the jpg files there (about 15 or so), i.e., all file names turned orange.
step 3: clicked on Edit, selected Move.
step 4: navigated to /sdcard/DCIM/100MEDIA which already had a few images that I had taken since changing the default storage location in my camera.
step 5: clicked on EDIT, selected Paste.
That's when I got a message saying "unable to move" or some such error - I don't recall the exact words and I had to click ok only for the same error to appear again some 15 more times. I guess it appeared once per image.
I went back to /emmc/DCIM/100MEDIA (the phone storage location) and to /sdcard/DCIM/100MEDIA (SD card location) but the files aren't there in either location. Please note that I'm a noob to Android having only used Windows Mobile OS phones in the past. I appreciate any help and insight in this matter so that I don't loose files more important than some randomly taken pics.

Hey all I am having a few problems with the HTC sync program as of late. It worked fine the first time I used it but now after the update it doesn't wanna work. The error its giving me is "No Storage Card Found", and I have it on the HTC sync option, with debug on. When I turn it to disk drive the SD card shows up and I can read it. So I am assuming the card is alright. I also ran the SDK manager trying to allow me to install apps to the SD card, but I am sure if this could not be the problem.

I'm trying to re-partition an SDCard on Android, with root access. What I'm trying to do is resize the 5.9GB partition into 3GB, and then make an EXT partition with the remaining space. I can think of two ways to do this, but I'm a bit stumped in doing either of them: 1) Cross-compile GNU parted, and run it on Android to modify the filesystem in place. This would be my preferred method, but I've been trying to statically compile parted using scratchbox and haven't had much luck, and I haven't been able to dynamically compile for Android in scratchbox either. 2) Directly modify the 512 byte MBR using some utility on my computer, and then dd the file on Android. I have a tool to view the MBR (mbrwiz), but I don't know how to edit it. Does anybody have any suggestions for either, or possibly a third route?
