Samsung Captivate :: SD Card And Phone Internal Storage
Jul 28, 2010
When I look at the settings and "SD card and phone storage" option I see the different types of storage. Based on what I see, please verify the following assumptions are correct. The external SD card is obviously the one I added. I assume it can be used to store media files (via USB, direct write on a PC, etc.). I read until Froyo we won't be able to install apps on this card.
The internal SD card is what is built into the phone for apps and other things those apps write to the phone.
Looks like Google Listen writes to this area (can't make it write to the external SD and not sure why). It appears that the only things writing to there are my camera and of course any music, pics, or videos I load on there directly. Nothing else seems to make use of it. The internal phone storage is for things like the OS and is pretty much off limits. When I go into the "My Files" app on the phone it dumps me into the home directory which happens to be /sdcard. I assume this is the internal SD card? Under that directory it also has "/sd" which appears to be my external SD card. Why would they make it look like "/sd" is a subdirectory of "/sdcard" when it's not?

Do the apps get stored on the internal SD card on the phone? Or on the section where it says Internal phone storage?

I've recently restored my phone to factory defaults and it decided not to remove my music. Is there any way I can get my phone and it's internal storage to a "factory fresh" state?

Most of the applications on my phone are stored on the internal storage. I cannot figure out how to access the internal storage to manage these applications. I may need to reset my phone, but I don't want to lose my paid applications.

I finally decided to apply a lag-fix to me phone. I used the RyanZA fix available in the market. I'm not exactly sure on the stock partition configuration on the Captivate but if I understand the lag-fix, an ext2 partition is created and the system files are moved to that partition. Thinking ahead for when Froyo arrives, I'm wondering if I can format all of my internal storage and reinstall a ROM. If I format the internal storage, do the necessary partitions need to be created manually or does installing a ROM create the needed partitions? I'm fairly new to Android so excuse me if my terminology is off.

Is anyone else experiencing problems downloading and running apps from the market due to low memory issues? Why did they only put 512MB of internal memory for app storage on this Epic when the AT&T galaxy version got 8GB of internal memory in addition to the 16GB micro Sd card???
My memory is full now, and without android 2.2 I can't move apps to the SD card. They should have provided all of their galaxy class phones with the 8GB internal memory.

When I boot up my phone, I'm getting this message: "Damaged Internal SD Card." Not a micro SD card. It's saying my internal SD card is damaged. Am I screwed? Do I need to return this thing? Is there a way to format the internal SD card on this thing? I found the "Format Card" option in settings. It's working fine, although the fact that this came up in the first place is very troublesome. Some further information: I did the GPS thing where you dial *#*# and some number, then rebooted my phone. My internal card was fine until I rebooted. That was the first time I got that message of a damaged internal sd card.

I'm quite new to Android and the Captivate (but not new to operating systems). I ran into an issue that I can't yet figure out, but I wonder if other people have also encountered. With some USB chargers (notably Blackberry chargers), I've noticed that the USB data connection prompt comes up. Regardless of the setting I choose (including canceling the dialog), the internal SD card is unmounted. If I disconnect the USB cable, the internal SD card is STILL unmounted and I don't get an option in the UI to mount it again. I end up having to reboot the phone. Attached is a screen shot of the SD card status screen when this issue occurs. So, what would be a good way to troubleshoot this? Get dmesg output, perhaps?

My moment seems to be losing internal storage at alarming rate. Only have about 35 apps installed which only took me from 198mb to 155 or so. Now I am at 120. I barely use the phone except for making a few calls/texts and browsing the web. Happens mainly when plugged into my laptop or whenever I update my applications.

I've bought this chinese clone of the SIII, it's a MT6575. It's great except for the internal storage, which supposedly is 500MB but there seems to be an invisible SD storage which is 2GB. It's really confusing... When I go to Settings -> Storage there are 3 memories: "Internal Storage" (claims to be 4GB but it's fake, it's actually 500MB), "Phone Storage" (claims to be 16.5GB but it's probably 2GB), and finally my SD, "SD Card" (32GB).
The thing is, I'm having problems downloading big apps because apps go to "Internal Storage" which is 500MB only, and which files are stored in the "Phone Storage" (maybe internal & phone are actually the same?). However when I go to Settings -> Apps, on the "Downloaded" tab, the apps are in "Internal Storage" (500MB), and on the "On SD Card" tab, it shows that apps are in "Phone Storage" (the ones I moved to SD). This means my 32GB SD isn't being used by the system when I send apps to SD probably.
Also, my 32GB SD card is found in /mnt/sdcard2, and the /mnt/sdcard... I don't know which storage is that.
So basically all this is happening because I tried to Link2SD with my 32GB SD doing all the 2 partitions stuff and so, but Link2SD never detects the "secondary SD" which is the 32GB SD, as this fake SD card, "Phone Storage", is probably what the programs thinks to be the SD card.

For some reason my Incredible won't mount both the internal phone storage and the SD card storage at the same time. What I mean is...when I plug my phone into my PC I only get a single popup asking to mount the phone's SD card storage, but not the internal phone storage. If I remove the SD card (or unmount the SD card using menus on the phone) and then toggle the connection type from Disk Drive, to Charge only, and then back to Disk Drive (to burp the connection), the internal phone storage will mount, but the SD card won't mount because it has been removed. When I connect my wife's incredible, my computer sees both the SD card storage and the internal storage (as expected) and gives me prompts for both. I took the SD card from the problematic phone and put it in the "good" phone and there are no issues at all (IE.. both the internal storage and SD storage mount). This of course means there is no issue with the SD card.

I bought my new phablet that was powered by 4.1
im shocked with how the manufacturer of my device(cherry mobile) designated their storage. the phone storage is 2gb and internal is 500 mb.
it is not a problem if i could write apps on phone storage by default but even though the 'write to phone storage' is checked, when i downloaded an app, the internal storage still losses free space.
so is it possible to extend internal storage?

My internal storage is currently 337 MB. I was planning on buying a bigger SD card, either 16GB or 32GB. I'm very new to everything with Androids and have never been big with computers. I read that if I want a lot of applications and everything that I would have to root the phone because the internal storage is so limited and then move everything to the SD card. I tried rooting the phone, it didn't work (I didn't mess up anything with the phone, probably just missed a step), but considering I still know so little about all this I decided it would be better to wait with rooting. Will I be fine with not rooting my phone and picking up a bigger SD card or will my phone run very slow once I start installing a lot of stuff?

Bricked my Maxell Maxtab C8 while trying to exchange the Internal USB storage with the SD Card. The only thing that happens when it boots is that the Android Boot logo comes up and stays there forever. I have managed to get it in some kind of recovery mode (image of cute green little android laying on it's back with with a red triangle), have also managed to install Android SDK manager and issued the command "adb devices" in shell - reporting "{serialnumber} recovery".
I need firmware to put on the device, where I can find that? Does not need to be original (4.1.1), I'm satisfied if I get it to work again.
As far as I know it's some kind of MID tabled branded Maxell, at least it said that in the settings while it still worked, and also Windows claimed that.

Yesterday I received my Huawei Honor 3C and I've installed MIUI ASAP instead of Emotion UI. Everything's great but I have a problem with double SD Card, I mean: I have my own external card and the phone got his own by emulating it's internal storage as SD Card (it's a symlink to /storage/emulated/0 and it's the same as /storage/emulated/legacy, so this fake sd is eating up my storage, there are also other symlinks in /storage/, /mnt/ and even in root folder there is a symlink sdcard->/storage/emulated/legacy). Phone and apps are correctly seeing external card as SD Card but in reality the internal storage is being used for everything.Because of this I have only about 5GB available instead of 64GB
Is there any way to terminate the emulation or changing it's target to sdcard2 so that I could use my card correctly? I've tried few things but nothing works. Symlinks are being recreated during boot so editing or deleting them does not work. Editing vold.fstab does nothing because ext is being mounted after boot while the emulation stars while in it - I guess that a proped ini script could do the work.

I have a nexus 7, OTG cable, flash drive and stickmount installed. As an external storage device this works fine for movies, audio etc.I'm not experienced with android having only previously used it on my touchpad, and wondered if the following was possible.
Is there an app that can essentially clone the externally mounted USB drive so that when installing an app with a large data download i can choose to download the data to the externally mounted usb drive instead of the main device memory. An example, Spiderman has nearly 2GB of data and i would prefer to move it using an app rather than having to continuously move the data file from the root to the external USB using es file explorer.

My wife has a completely stock 1.5 Eris. She's getting a low storage notification. I looked at the system setting and her internal storage is completely maxed out, but the SD card is 90% available. I've mounted her phone to my laptop and tried moving files around, but nothing is moving. She only has pictures on her phone, not a single song, movie, video, etc. How do I get the data moved to the SD card?

I have an Android D2-912 pad which I use mostly for reading. All my books are stored in the internal storage of the tablet ( 1.2 GB) which is almost full. For this reason , I needed additional space and bought a 16 GB class 10 Lexar Micro Card .The card works pretty well from my PC. The problem is that when the external SD card is in the slot of the D2, neither the internal storage content of the D2 pad nor the SD card show in My Computer, only the empty D2 icon, ,so that I cannot transfer the files. Onjly if I remove the SD card from the slot, then the full internal storage contents of the D2 pops up again, which doesn't work because for the file transfer I need both. .The mounted SD card and its contents, though, show nicely in the Settings/Storage tab of my D2, but even so I cannot do any file transfer .This inability to see the SD card also affects my attempts to expand the RAM with the Roehsoft Swap Ram expander, It works well, except that it does not see the SD card and takes the space for the virtual expansion from the internal storage, which is practically full, so that the expansion is minimal. .
