HTC Desire HD :: 3D Game Performance - Better Graphic Processor

Nov 9, 2010

Lot of people are saying that the Samsung Galaxy S has a better graphics processor than the DHD so it's better for gaming. I was wondering if anyone has tried any of the Gameloft HD games on the DHD yet, or the Playstation emulator?

Samsung Behold 2 :: What If Anything Will Upgraded OS Do To Improve Performance Of Processor?

Jan 1, 2010

I've always said that the Behold2 is a great looking phone. It has software/OS issues for sure. However, I don't use the cube so, that bit of nonsense doesn't get in my way. The laggi-ness does get on my nerves because it slows things to a crawl much too often. Sometimes programs or the TouchWiz slider don't open when they should. Frozen-ness happens too.

The scary part is that I have very few third party apps installed. Sometimes the controls for the Media player don't show up at all. So you can see why I am reticent to install anything beyond what I consider to be essentials so as not to over-burden an already beleaguered setup.Considering these known issues, why were we ignored on the Android 1.6 release? We weren't graced with 2.0 either. Now 2.1 is on the horizon and there is no word about its being sent our way. I'd like to think that Samsung or Tmo wants to keep us happy so that we don't jump ship in a few days. I could dump this puppy because I am within my 14 days and am not a happy camper.

Questions: What if anything will an upgraded OS do to improve the performance of our processor? Or, what improvements might we expect with a new OS release?

Android :: Game Performance Degrading Over Time

Nov 14, 2010

I've written a game and I've noticed that after playing for about 20-30 minutes the performance starts degrading. By performance degradation I mean my average frames-per-second seem to slowly drop. I'm doing all my allocs at the beginning and the only things that alloc in game according to DDMS are Integer.toString operations (for integer values I need to draw with drawtext) and setBounds on some drawables.

I'm calling System.gc() periodically, when I know not much is going on in-game (e.g. between waves of enemies). I'm doing this in order to avoid GC from happening during critical gameplay periods. If you know the answer to any of the following, please do tell (even a guess would do) Why is performance degrading with time? What could be causing this? Is there a way to avoid allocs due to Integer.toString and Drawable.setBounds calls?

Android :: Drawing Bitmaps On Screen In Game Without Slow Performance

Sep 16, 2009

I want to make a tile based game for android. At the moment I am drawing each tile as a separate bitmap. I have a big for loop that reads from a string and draws different tiles depending on what character it finds to draw the level. I have allowed the user to scroll the screen using scrolling gestures. However the game is too slow. It takes a long time to update the screen after the user scrolls. I presume this is because it has to draw each tile's bitmap individually. What would be a faster way to draw the level? I was thinking I could merge all the tiles into one bitmap. But I don't know how to do this.

Anyway here is my code so you can see the problem:
package org.example.tutorial2d;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.GestureDetector;
import android.view.MotionEvent;
import android.view.GestureDetector.OnGestureListener;
import org.example.tutorial2d.Panel;
public class Tutorial2D extends Activity implements OnGestureListener {
GestureDetector gestureScanner; Panel main;
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
gestureScanner = new GestureDetector(this);
//requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
main = new Panel(this); setContentView(main); }
@Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent me) {
return gestureScanner.onTouchEvent(me); }
@Override public boolean onScroll(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float distanceX, float distanceY) {
main.handleScroll(distanceX,distanceY); return true; }
@Override public boolean onDown(MotionEvent e) { return true;
} @Override public boolean onFling(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float velocityX, float velocityY) { return true;
} @Override public void onLongPress(MotionEvent e){
} @Override public void onShowPress(MotionEvent e) {
} @Override public boolean onSingleTapUp(MotionEvent e) { return true; } }

And the class that does all the work:
package org.example.tutorial2d;
import android.content.Context;
import android.graphics.Bitmap;
import android.graphics.BitmapFactory;
import android.graphics.Canvas;
import android.graphics.Color;
import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.View;
import org.example.tutorial2d.Point;
public class Panel extends View {
private int scrollX = 0; private int scrollY = 0;
public Panel(Context context) { super(context);
} @Override public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
/*Bitmap scratch; //Drawable scratch;
//scratch = getContext().getResources().getDrawable(
// R.drawable.icon); canvas.drawColor(Color.BLACK);
//scratch.draw(canvas); int origin = 0;
scratch = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.horizontal5);
canvas.drawBitmap(scratch, origin, origin, null);
int width = scratch.getWidth(); int height = scratch.getHeight();
scratch = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.room4entrynesw3x3);
canvas.drawBitmap(scratch, origin + width, origin - 32, null);
[Code]

Android :: How Does Emulator Performance Compare To Real Device Performance?

May 23, 2010

I'm looking into writing an Android game, tough I don't curerntly own an Android device. For those of you who own a device, how does the performance on the emulator relate to real device performance? I'm especially interested in graphics related tasks.This obviously depends on both the machine running the emulator, and the specific device in question, but I'm talking rough numbers here.This question is a duplicate, but since that post is heavily outdated, I figured it's irrelevant by now.

HTC Desire :: Poor Performance In Weak Signal Areas

Apr 29, 2010

I have never had any problems at home with either my trusty unlocked N95 or Orange Sony Ericsson T610 (remember them?) so I had no qualms over ordering a nice shiny (dark brown) HTC Desire.

3G coverage is a bit iffy in the area as I'm right on the border of an excellent to good area so I never expected to have super fast data over the air, but I have wifi locally for that anyway.

So you can imagine my disappointment when the first call with the mobile from home cut off quite suddenly. A retry to reconnect failed with a no service message and no signal strength. I then spent the next hour playing around with the settings turning off wifi, data, setting the phone to 3G only (no chance) and then GSM only.

When the phone was working and making a call the audio was not clean and very digital. There was also a chance that mid call you would be cut off for no reason. When it wasn't playing ball at all the signal strength varied from three bars down to zero without moving the phone. Sometimes upon initiating the call it came back immediately with no signal and cutting the call off. Picking the phone up from sitting on the side in sleep mode you were usually presented with a no service message.

Orange were excellent and immediately replaced the phone, a courier arriving at 6:15pm upon reporting the problem at 8:30am that morning. Unfortunately the replacement was exactly the same.

Even worse, my place of work is in a designated poor reception area. There are a number of us on Orange as it is the only network that can at a pinch be picked up inside. My Desire...no signal at all. Moving to a window seat got me two bars but the phone refused to connect or hold a call. The only time it did calling 150 sounded like I was listening to a recording of a Darlek. A Nokia 5300 on Orange alongside was nice and clear, with very good tone by comparison.

By chance another member of staff also had recently signed up with Orange on a Desire (500mins, unlim texts, 500Mb, free phone, 20). In a back to back test both phones were the same. We even tried swapping SIMs. Luckily for him he has no problems with reception when at home so is quite happy with the Desire.

Contacting Orange again I did not get much further. Talking to technical support they were not much help and suggested that they did not warrant the phone to work inside the building and as I could make a continuous call outside then they did not class the phone at fault. This included my problems at home in what is termed an excellent coverage area! When I pointed out that two other phones I owned did work in the very same location I was told that mobile designs differ and positions of antennas vary considerably.

Frustrated I decided the only course of action was to use my right to cancel within 7 days as it was apparent that I was not going to be able to resolve the issue. Even last night it performed perfectly for a couple of calls and then failed miserably an hour later.

As a gadget I was smitten. Even as I handed the package over to the Post Master today I was inwardly screaming GIVE IT BACK! Unfortunately I need to be able to make calls on it when I want, not when it wants.

I have only seen a couple of other members note a similar problem on these forums but I have noticed a large number of Nexus problems that sound very similar. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this or do you all live in 5/5 coverage areas?

Android :: Better Graphic And USB Programs

Mar 18, 2009

I do not consider my G1 to be a phone. My old second hand Nokia 6100 was a better phone because it was so small and light weight. Why I bought the G1 is because I consider my G1 to be a Mini Laptop. But we need better program for it. I need a graphic program like the Paint Shop Pro 4 where I can resize and fix photos. I still have not figured out how to connect to WiFi and call the USA for free (I am in Vietnam) BUT G Voice should be doing something in a few weeks. I will wait for them. Tonight I downloaded the USB connection program so my G1 can make my computer in my hotel connect to internet but edge network here is expensive. I did find a way to stop the phone from Sniffing the EDGE network. I mess up the name in the APN code by adding xxx to the end. Then it will not connect to DATA.

Android :: Managing Large Graphic Set

Sep 14, 2009

I'm writing a game for a computer class that I'm currently taking for school. The game has a lot of graphics associated with it (mostly in .png format). There is too much data to simply include it as part of the 'res'. The way i'm currently doing it, is to store all of the graphics in a single zip file, in a folder on the SDCard, e.g., / sdcard/Game/PlayerImages.zip (or whatever). And then i'm using the ZipInputStream to read from those, then using the BitmapFactory to decode the stream and then draw them on the canvas. The problem that I'm having is that this method is terribly slow if I add a lot of images into the zip file. The best way I have found thus far is to name the .png files within the zip numerically, then use a for-loop to jump directly to a specific file, but this is still a very slow way of doing it. I would like to use a single file (like zip) to hold all of the files for several reasons. 1., i'm trying to use a file container so i can simply update graphic 4.png and then push it into the zip file (for example) from a server. 2., because android sees all image files on the sdcard when you open the gallery application. 3., easier to prevent data manipulation by doing an md5/sha-1 checksum on 1 zip file, rather than every time a file is opened if it weren't in a container.

S3 is running 4.0.4

I was told mybackup pro would work - fail

I've seen many people suggest titanium backup in my searches - however i have heard that it will only back up game data if the device is rooted.

Android :: Moving A Graphic On Different Screen Sizes With The Right Ratio

Apr 4, 2010

I tracked the behaviour of the different screen sizes when I increased the position of a graphic by 10 pixel. Unfortunately happened what I already thought. When the display is bigger, I'm able move a graphic a lot of times more to get to the bottom of the screen. So the ratio between the graphic and its environment is not correct anymore (so not 10 pixel as on normal screen) although the change of the graphic on the different screens looks correct (On big screen it is bigger, on small screens it is smaller). When I move the graphic from the top of the screen to the bottom, I can move that on 480x800 about 65 times, on 480x854 70 times, and on the 320x480 screen only about 25 times. So the target must be to calculate the right ratio so that 10 pixels on the small screen are 17 pixel (or sth. similar) on big screens. What approaches do I have to do that? I already thought about getting the value of res.getConfiguration().screenLayout to know if I have a small, normal, or big size to be able to calculate anyhow the right ratio, but this both seems to be pretty cumbersome and moreover I get values from res.getConfiguration().screenLayout I can't explain. I launched 6 emulator instances and got the following values from res.getConfiguration().screenLayout:

240x320 QVGA low density: 17 320x480 HVGA medium density: 18 480x854 WVGA high density: 34 480x800 WVGA high density: 34 240x400 WQVGA low density: 34 240x432 WQVGA low density: 266435490 (yes, I really get this value!)

This approach seems to be useless because I cannot even distinguish between 480x854 and 480x800, much less of the last value which seems to be corrupt.

How can I solve it to move a graphic on the different screens with the right ratio? How do game developers solve this when they support all screens?
