HTC Hero :: SD Card Problem With Saving/downloading
Sep 15, 2010
HTC Hero: Rooted with 2.1 and previously running absolutely fine but for some reason today I'm not able to save/download anything.
I tried to download a picture off the internet and it was saying there was not enough space (even though the phone memory has 122mb free thanks to Apps2SD and my SD card has over 3GB free) so I tried to email the picture from my PC, received on my phone and when I try to download the picture it says you need an SD card to do this... but the card IS being seen by the phone because my apps are running, I can access music and pictures that are on it.
I unmounted the card and then remounted it and my phone went into a loop, trying to reinitialise and couldn't do it. So I just restarted the phone and, again, all apps work but cannot save or download anything.
I'm trying to avoid wiping everything and starting from scratch but seeing as I've been meaning to move to 2.2 I think it might be an idea...
Deffo seems to just be an SD card problem, had an old MMS message, tried to save it and it wouldn't worked. Used the SaveMMS app and that brought up a long error string which basically pointed to a problem with the SD card. What confuses me though is that I can still read from it (playing music) and I just deleted a couple of pictures off it which surely constitutes editing?

So i got this problem i haven't been able to find heads or tails in, some pointer would be appreciated as to why this is happening.
I recently stopped using any other sms app, other than the stock, i had VR12 before, now Froydvillain 1.5 and everytime i want to save a picture from a MMS i recieve, i get the following error
"Copying attachment to SD card failed!"
Anyone have any idea what's going on ? Other than a previous mms carrier issue i had, this is the only issue i've had with this rom.

I am trying to download a ringtone onto my phone (which apparently gets downloaded to my sd card under download) but its saying I have no available space. Its a 2 gig mem card and i have 1.7 gigs left on it thats completely free. And my phone has 99mb of internal memory free. So a few hundred kb ringtone should not be saying this.

What I'm trying to do is this: I want my application to download an image from the Internet and save it to the phone's internal memory in a location that is private to the application. If there is no image available for the list item (i.e. it can't be found on the Internet), I want a default placeholder image to display. This is the image that I have defined in my list_item_row.xml file as the default.
In my ListActivity file, I am calling an instance of a CustomCursorAdapter class I have written. It is in CustomCursorAdapter where I am iterating through all the list items and defining what content needs to be mapped to the views, including the image file by trying to read it from internal memory.
I've seen several questions on this subject, but the examples either are specific to external phone memory (e.g. SDCard), involve saving strings instead of images, or involve using Bitmap.CompressFormat to reduce the resolution of the file (which is unnecessary in my case, as these images will be small thumbnails of already-small resolution). Trying to piece together code from each example has been difficult, hence my asking about my specific example.
At the moment, I believe I've written valid code, but no image is displaying for my list items, including the default placeholder image. I don't know if the problem is being caused by invalid download/save code, or invalid read code - it doesn't help that I don't know how to check internal memory to see if the image exists.Anyways, here's my code...

Since 2.2 I have been unable to download anything and only get an error message after it takes you to the download screen. This is happening on the stock browser as well as skyfire. Am I missing something? This worked fine in 2.1.

I have the camera set to save on the SD Card. However, when I take pictures it still stores it on the device memory. Why is that? Is this a known error?

I finally was able to root my droid eris and was also able to download and install apptoSD2 on my eris and when i click on the app, it tells me i need to partition my sdcard. I selected what i want the FAT32 and the ext2 to be and hit apply and it then tells me it is done and i need to reboot it and has a button to click but it didn't work so i did it by going to power and shutting down and restarting, but nothing happens, i even went back to the app several times after trying it and it tells me the same thing each time. Is there something i am forgetting to do, or what can i do to partition my sdcard and be able to save my apps to my sd card.

I tell you, I love this phone but I hate it. Compared to a Windows Mobile device where everything is as simple as dragging and dropping into folders, this phone gives me such headaches with its overly simplistic (and limited) processes. threads on making your own mp3 ringtone, I've got a kick-ass sampling from The Church's "Under the Milky Way" (you know the part. The synth bagpipe bridge). BUT I can only save it to the storage card. Which isn't a problem except until I get some spare cash, I can't quite swing a 16gb yet. Lots of little 512mb (don't laugh!) cards that I swap frequently (and I'd like a little sit-down with the person who designed the card slot cover to only be opened by gerbil paws). Is there a way to save my custom ringtone directly to the phone? Or will I have to stick it on every card until that glorious payday when I can get a 16gb?

I have had my Droid for a week now and I noticed in the settings menu that I haven't used my MicroSD card at all to save any files or apps. How can I fix this? I thought all of the Apps were saved to the microsd card to start with? I have 6 GB's life on my phone and still have 14.7 GBs when I connect it to my computer.

I have a Samsung Mesmerize through US Cellular. I am getting my company email on the phone just fine.. But when I get emails with attachments I have to save the attachments on the phone then navigate to where they are saved to be able to view them. Is there a setting that can be changed or an app to download that will allow me to view the files without saving them to the SD card?

I have tried on 3 occasions today to update to froyo with no success. Thing is when my Desire goes to save data on my SD card I get this message; "an error occurred while saving your data to your SD card, the backup cannot be completed."
Can anyone advise me as to what to do as I can't proceed any further. By the way my Desire is sim free if this in anyway helps.

After saving my contacts to the SD card, resetting the phone, then importing them all back, the numbers are now in the form of 012-345-67891. Does anyone know how to remove the hyphens?

Is it possible to have my Camera app save recordings (videos) to a custom directory? Currently, the only option I see available is "Save to Phone", or "Save to SD Card".
I'd like to be able to save to my SD Card, however, I'd like for the saved files to not be in the folder "DCIM". I'd like to make a custom directory.
Is this possible? How would I go about achieving this?
My phone is currently rooted.

I created a separate project and activity that downloads an image from a URL, converts it to a Bitmap, and then uses a FileOutputStream to save that file to the SD card. When in the separate project and free-standing activity, this worked fine, and I could see that the image is stored on the SD card. public class PictureDownload extends Activity {
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
downloadFromUrl("http://www.coutblog.com/prism/uploads/0030.jpg", "newpic.jpg");
displayPic("newpic.jpg");............
