A few of us at work are wondering if we can use the google map or anyother type of locating device on our phones without phone service. Does the google maps show our location using the cell towers?

I'm trying to obtain my location using android 2.1 through "Provider_Network" but the problem is it uses both cell towers and Wifi Access Point. i only want to obtain my location through Wifi Access point and not through cell towers? any idea how to do it?

I understand that if I turn on gps options it becomes much more accurate, but it's a real battery eater. coming from a 2 year old samsung mysto on Helio network that ran google maps down to the meter for me (and only needed to be recharged every 4 days) it seems like this should work better.Am I missing something? That little mysto couldn't have been running active GPS pinging the whole time. What made it so much better at locating?

I did revert back to previous stock ROM and had service just fine.Reinstalled CM6 thinking maybe that would fix it - no go.If it is not one thing, it is another anytime I try to install a new ROM.

View 1 Replies View RelatedGot a really strange problem. I am in Vietnam using MobiFone service. About 3 months ago something changed overnight and my battery went from 20 hours to just a 6 hour battey life. After a week I did a factory reset but the same. Took it to HTC in Saigon to be tested but they said no problem YET when I was there battery lasted longer. The problem was in only in Can Tho where I live UP to this month when the problem is now in Long Xuyen. I travel, to Cambodia a lot and usally when I leave Can Tho Battery life is better. I am now in Cambodia and battery life is 40 hours on a CamShin SIM. For a test in Can Tho I went to a phone shop and used a Vinaphone SIM for an hour and got a 40 hour life. This is a joke! Is there any application that can control the Radio or at least tell me what's going on? I tried a few but they do not say anything different between Vietnam or Cambodia. MobiFone did something but refuse to tell me anything. Back of my G1 with 1.6 is cool now but in Vietnam back of phone is very warm. Tried to reflash the Radio but phone will not let me. I rooted but still it will not let me. think I must load a new recovery program.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Telus HTC Hero and for a few weeks now my GPS simply stopped working with google-maps. It keeps saying "can't find location". If I use Gps Status app, it shows a compass and shows how fast I'm moving in what ever direction, but for some reason google maps can't seem to lock on. I've tried hard and soft resets, turning triangulation on off, GPS on off.

This can be expensive when roaming in Europe. So is it possible to obtain maps for memory and use the GPS to show location just like a TomTom.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIf anyone is CURRENTLY with Sprint for their cell service in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area of Arizona, could you please tell me how your cell service is?I'm looking at moving to the HTC EVO in June when my contract is up with Verizon, but I'm pretty worried about the quality of Sprint's service. Most comments I have heard about Sprint have been either average or negative.On the contrary, my time with Verizon has really been stellar, few if any dropped calls, coverage EVERYWHERE it seems, and pretty decent customer service.Even though Sprints plans are $30 to $40 cheaper than Verizon, it won't matter if the service stinks and I can't make/receive calls or get on broadband.Just trying to weigh my options as the Incredible will be out as well, and may have to go with that one instead.

I downloaded the app "Trapster", which is a police notification overlay on top of Google Maps. It has the feature of over-riding the sleep timer and keeps the display always on. Disabling the sleep timer is not an option. I would like Google Maps to have the same functionality a 3rd party overlay app is giving me.

Being on the Hero, GM is pre-loaded and I don't know how to update it to the new version (since it's not listed in my Market downloaded, being that it was pre-loaded on the phone).Does it automatically do it, or do I have to uninstall and grab the new version from the Market? I went into the settings, but there was nothing there to check for updates, just 'Latitude' and the other standard options.

In my previous TPro, there was a setting where I could just keep the screen on if my phone was plugged in.
Does anyone know if it possible to see the Google app store without having cell phone service on the Android (like from my ADP with no SIM card)?I can see bits of it at http://market.android.com, but can you see all of it without the Android on a cell phone account?

Is there a known solution? I cleared the cache and data and force-stopped the ap, but it still happens. For what it's worth, the same exact thing happened on my Moment (well, on the Moment Google Maps didn't work at all due to the POS GPS)

View 13 Replies View RelatedA couple of times now I've had this problem on my Hero, and today it was a huge pain in the ass, as I was looking for the place I was headed to but couldn't find it.The problem is my Google Maps couldn't lock onto my signal it was jumping all over the state at first told me I was in Sacramento (one of the turn directions next to it had a misspelling "Socramento", wtf?), then Santa Rosa, then as I kept driving and pressing My Location, it switched to a random street about a mile away, then dumped me in the ocean.During this time, the GPS icon kept blinking and didn't stay solid. Also, once it picked up a location, it didn't continue to update it as it should do.I had to restart the phone and I think it's working OK now but this is at least the 2nd time it's happened to me.

I'm on tmous sgs3 running the latest beta of hfj with android 4.3. Will this break my ROM? I don't really care I just want to have GPS only. And some of the dumb apps I have don't respond unless I have network checked off.. Which I don't care I want to force GPS always.... Is this possible??? SGH-T999
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I load Google Maps and it first locates me, it centers the map on my location. Once I am travelling, the map does not follow my location. My location dot will go right off the map and I have to manually drag the map to see the next section I am now driving on.

I just got my invite to Google voice and I was super excited, but then I found out there were some issues with Sprint playing nice with GV. I have a couple of questions for any of you using GV with sprint network. FYI, I have the any mobile any time plan. Questions:
1. I understand that sprint treats GV as a landline call, does this mean that it will eat my minutes with every call? also, is there a workaround for this? 2. should I get a google number or keep my number 3. if i get a google number can people still call my old number? 4. I read a lot about call forwarding and some *28 and *73 options, but i couldn't wrap my head around what to actually do. I know sprint dropped some 20 cent charge, but I also read that in some situations that charge still applies. 5. can you cancel out of the service after you have signed up.
I have a Rogers Magic on the AT&T network here in the US. Its a 1.5 system.
On my old phone, the BJ-II running WM6, in google maps I could get my not-so-accurate-location from the cell tower. It wasnt aGPS, it was just a rough guesstimate of where I was at.
With this magic, is this functionality just not possible? It seems the only way to get a rough estimate of location is to use wifi of gps.
The igoogle web page is able to get my location though, it knows what city Im in, and its not using wifi/gps to do this, so I dont see why google maps isnt doing the same thing.
Also, I'd like to upgrade to 1.6 but I dont know in my phone is CRC1 or CRC24 or 32a or 32b.

Is anyone having issues with Google Maps being able to pinpoint your exact location while using the Evo?I used to use Google Maps all the time on my MyTouch, and it would always find my exact location with no problem. But I used it for the first time today on my Evo, and it was always a couple of streets off (not "general" location with the transparent blue circle, but "exact" location w/no circle). This is very inconvenient when using Navigation because it keeps wanting to redirect from a place that I'm not at.I made sure my GPS was on before I started using Maps. I haven't tried using Sprint Nav or any other Nav apps, so I'm not sure if it's a problem with Google Maps, or the Evo GPS.

On google maps on the Droid X, google maps doesn't find me at all and simply gives this error"Please enable a my location source in system settings".I don't want to enable full GPS for simple things like finding a local restaurant as approximate location would be fine with this

When I rotate my phone, the arrow turns round, but the location is nowhere near where I actually am. Anybody have any idea what I can do about this, as I really need to use this feature.
